It’s officially open! ⚓🔎

After years of research, conservation, planning and some very careful installation work, Textiles from the Deep is now on view at The Charleston Museum.

Many of these remarkable Hunley artifacts are leaving the lab for the very first time, giving visitors a rare look at the clothing remnants, buttons, footwear and personal items that are helping researchers better understand the eight men that navigated the Hunley into world history.

A huge amount of work went into making this exhibit possible, and we’re excited for you to finally see it.

The Charleston Museum, in partnership with the Friends of the Hunley and Clemson University’s Warren Lasch Conservation Center, will open "Textiles from the Deep: Findings from the H.L. Hunley Submarine" October 3, 2026 (more info below)

History can feel distant until something brings you closer to the people who lived it. ⚓🔎

Conserved clothing remnants and personal artifacts from the Hunley crew will soon go on display, offering a deeply personal connection to the eight men who made history aboard the submarine more than 160 years ago.

Many of these remarkable pieces have never before been on public display.

Textiles from the Deep opens October 3 at The Charleston Museum, presented in partnership with Friends of the Hunley and Clemson University’s Warren Lasch Conservation Center.

Twenty-six years ago today was the day the H. L. Hunley came home. ⚓

On August 8, 2000, she broke the surface for the first time in 136 years. Her recovery was an extraordinary moment in history but it was not the end of the journey. It marked the beginning of an unprecedented conservation effort, driven by innovation, discovery and a commitment to preserving the Hunley’s story for generations to come. 🔍

Today, we celebrate the remarkable feat of bringing her home and the continuing work to unlock the mysteries she carried with her from the past.

⚓ History is meant to be explored, and this weekend, kids tour FREE at the Hunley!

Education and discovery are at the heart of the Hunley story, and we want young visitors to experience both for themselves.

In honor of the anniversary of the Hunley’s recovery, kids receive free tours on Saturday, August 8, and Sunday, August 9.

Bring the family to see the world’s first successful combat submarine up close and discover the remarkable story of its history, recovery, and ongoing conservation.
