Our first all-ages workshop for the Dreamscape exhibition will be on Saturday, June 6 at 1:00 p.m. Free and all materials and instruction provided. Register at https://events.illinoisstate.edu/event/all-ages-artmaking-workshop-at-university-galleries-3.

Dreamscape, curated by our Teen Art Group, features 17 paintings, prints, drawings, and sculptures selected from University Galleries’ permanent collection. The exhibition includes works that allude to fantasies, nightmares, and visions.

For this workshop, we will tour the exhibition and make projects inspired by the Surrealist Exquisite Co**se game.

Summer field trips have begun!

Yesterday, we had so much fun with Scribbles Center for Learning. We toured through the Dreamscape exhibition that was curated by our Teen Art Group and then made Exquisite Co**se drawings.

New exhibition now open!

Dreamscape is a group exhibition of 17 paintings, prints, drawings, and sculptures selected from University Galleries’ permanent collection by Bloomington High School members of our Teen Art Group. Over the course of several meetings, the students discussed themes, viewed artworks, and developed the checklist and layout of the exhibition.

The exhibition title, Dreamscape, a merging of the words “dream” and “landscape,” alludes to fantasies, nightmares, and visions. The term also embraces multiple ideas the Teen Art Group students wanted to explore, including emotional reactions, mental processing, abstractions of bodies and landscapes, and states of dreaming.

Exhibiting artists include Alan R. Atkins (M.F.A. 2024), Harold Boyd (professor emeritus, Wonsook Kim School of Art), Bob Carlson & Tom Philabaum, Salvador Dalí, Minnie Evans, Mark Forth (B.S. 1987), David Hodges, Leonid Kosinstev, Tim Kowalczyk (M.F.A. 2011), Janet McKiernan, Schuyler Maehl (B.F.A. 2004), Thomas Morey (B.S. 1972), Gladys Nilsson, William J. O’Brien, Melissa Oresky (professor, Wonsook Kim School of Art), Odilon Redon, and Joseph Yoakum.

Teen Art Group members include Maggi Denham, Sage Eyres, Ray Grill, Issaria Jacobs, Ely Miller, Josephine Saebens, and Marlee Wayne.

Teen Art Group is supported by University Galleries’ grant from the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation—Mirza Arts and Culture Fund. Additional support is provided by the Lori Baum and Aaron Henkelman University Galleries Community Fund.

New exhibition now open!

2:43 on a Tuesday presents 32 works from University Galleries’ permanent collection, each selected for its relationship to ideas about chronology. These paintings, photographs, lithographs, sculptures, and ceramics reflect on the ways time passes, how it is experienced, felt, measured, and sequenced.

Artists include Barbara Crane, J. Brooks Dendy III, Frank Eckmair, Benjamin Gardner (M.F.A. 2005), Joan Gardner, Martin J. Garhart, Salvador Jiménez-Flores, Richard Mawdsley, Patrick McDonnell (M.S. 1990, M.F.A. 1993), Josefina Muñoz Torres, Patrick Nagatani, Robert Rauschenberg, and Neil Tetkowski (M.F.A. 1980).

2:43 on a Tuesday is curated by Holly Filsinger (M.A. 2023), Gallery Assistant at University Galleries. Exhibition-related workshops are supported by the Lori Baum and Aaron Henkelman University Galleries Community Fund.

Saturday was our Teen Art Group field trip to Chicago! We took the train; walked to the Chicago Cultural Center for multiple exhibitions, including a solo show by Alberto Aguilar; walked through Millennium Park; ate lunch at the Art Institute; and spent the rest of the afternoon at the museum, where we explored permanent collection displays from medieval through contemporary and temporary exhibitions including Korean National Treasures and Matisse's Jazz.

Thank you to Monica Estabrook (Bloomington High School) and the BHS students for being such wonderful partners, and to the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation and the Lori Baum and Aaron Henkelman University Galleries Community Fund for supporting Teen Art Group!

Next up, we'll be installing the exhibition that they curated. We finished the details for it during our train ride.
