June 1, 1876: Arthur MacArthur III is born. Unlike his father and younger brother, Douglas MacArthur, Arthur joins the U.S. Navy. Promoted to captain in 1921, his career is tragically cut short when he dies of appendicitis in 1923. In May 1919, Brigadier General Douglas MacArthur returned to the United States after serving occupation duty in Germany. He is greatly disappointed at the lack of recognition he and the rest of the 42nd "Rainbow" Division men receive when they return to the country after serving in the Great War. He would also grow increasingly concerned by events happening in Europe in the months following the armistice, especially the Treaty of Versailles. He writes to an old comrade that it seemed to him to be a "treaty of perpetual war rather than perpetual peace," and would be increasingly convinced that another global conflict was on the horizon.

John F. Kennedy was born in 1917. In addition to being a president of the United States, Kennedy was also a WWII veteran. He joined the US Naval Reserve in 1940 and served as a PT boat commander in the Panama Canal and the Pacific Theater. An incident in the Solomon Islands in August 1943 during which his PT boat was cut in half by a Japanese destroyer left him with serious injuries, made worse as he towed another injured crewman to shore. However, the rescue of he and his crew would earn them nation-wide fame. His older brother, Joe Kennedy, Jr., would also serve in the WWII as a USN pilot but was killed in action in 1944 while serving in England.
