One minute you're wandering through a carefully tended garden.

The next you're surrounded by towering trees, wildflowers and ferns.

Then suddenly you're standing beside a quiet pond or looking out over the St. Joseph River.

And this place packs a surprising amount into 105 acres.

Fernwood protects ๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜ ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฌ ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐˜ ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜†๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜€, meaning a single visit can take you through remarkably different landscapes.

๐ŸŒพ A reconstructed prairie filled with native plants.

๐ŸŒณ Woodlands carpeted with seasonal wildflowers.

๐ŸŒฟ An arboretum.

๐Ÿ’ง Springs and ponds.

๐ŸŒŠ And trails leading toward beautiful views of the St. Joseph River.

But Fernwood isn't only about wild spaces.

There are cultivated gardens tucked throughout the property, including a ๐—๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฒ ๐—š๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ป, herb garden, rain garden, perennial displays and collections of hardy ferns.

And then there's one you might not expect

Yep. Tiny trains and gardening apparently belong together, and we're here for it. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Families have another reason to put this place on the list.

The ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—”๐—ฑ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—š๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ป is designed specifically to let kids experience nature in a more hands-on way, while the preserve offers opportunities to spot birds, frogs and other wildlife.

Fernwood is also home to something a little more serious.

Its natural areas support ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ, ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜ ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€, making this more than a pretty place for an afternoon stroll.

And maybe that's what makes Fernwood special.

You don't really come here to rush from attraction to attraction.

You wander.

You take the trail you weren't planning to take.

You stop by the water.

You watch the birds.

You sit somewhere for five minutes longer than you intended.

๐Ÿ„ A little mushroom magic at Fernwood! ๐Ÿ„

While Director of Horticulture Jonathon, and a group of amazing volunteers, were clearing invasive plants along one of the trails, they spotted something hiding in the undergrowth: an entire colony of Orange Pinwheels (Marasmius siccus)!

These tiny mushrooms look like miniature orange umbrellas, complete with pleated caps and wiry stems. They often pop up in groups on fallen leaves and woody debrisโ€”proof that thereโ€™s always something new to discover when you get down in the dirt.

Next time you're on the trails, keep your eyes peeled. You never know what little wonders might be growing beneath your feet.
