Nicodemus also reminds us that the revolutionary spirit of the Declaration of Independence lives on. In 1877, the Nicodemus Town Company was formed so that Black Americans could build a community grounded in the foundational values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in their own all-Black town.

We've enjoyed having the exhibit "Declaration 250: The Big Bang of Modern Democracy" on display at the Nicodemus Township Hall, but after July 13th, it will move to the Hays Public Library.

This exhibit was created by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and is presented in Kansas by Humanities Kansas. If you're interested in learning about the impact of the American Declaration of Independence on democracy around the world, be sure to visit us by July 13th!

In reflection of Juneteenth, the story of ๐๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ค ๐š๐ ๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž is not only historyโ€”it is a living part of Kansas today.

The legacy of ๐๐ข๐œ๐จ๐๐ž๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฌ, ๐Š๐š๐ง๐ฌ๐š๐ฌ extends beyond its historic significance and can be seen in the farmers who continue to work the land, the families who preserve agricultural knowledge, and the next generation discovering their place in agriculture.

We recognize and appreciate the work of the Kansas Black Farmers Association in supporting farmers and strengthening agricultural communities through education, connection, and opportunity.

We are grateful to help share and uplift stories that reflect the ongoing impact of this important legacy.

After our nationโ€™s darkest days during the Civil War, some who had been enslaved found freedom in working the land, their own land. Nicodemus, Kansas is the oldest Black settlement west of theโ€ฆ
