Founded in 1877, Nicodemus is recognized as the only surviving Black homesteader community west of the Mississippi River. The Nicodemus Historical Society is seeking passionate, dedicated individuals to help preserve this remarkable history and share its story with future generations.

The Kansas Black Farmers Association (KBFA) will sponsor free brunch samples at the KBFA Farmerโ€™s Certified Kitchen, located at Ernestineโ€™s former cafรฉ. The samples will be prepared by our newest Nicodemus descendant residents and professional chefs, Brittney and Milton Jones. The couple recently moved to Nicodemus and are former professional chefs from Houston, Texas. Brittney is the daughter of Tammy Counts and granddaughter of the late Louella Holmes.

Come out, welcome them home, and enjoy a taste of the incredible dishes prepared by Nicodemusโ€™ newest culinary contributors!

Don't miss this! Join Angela Bates for "Children of the Promised Land," a presentation and discussion about the mothers and children of Nicodemus, Kansas.

Settled by Black homesteaders after the Civil War, Nicodemus is the only remaining western town established by African Americans during Reconstruction. Bates will share a pictorial history of the community, including children who were among the first in their families born free.

Angela will represent the ๐—ก๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜‚๐˜€ ๐—›๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฆ๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜† at this meaningful gathering of Kansas historians, museum professionals, and community leaders.

Hosted by Humanities Kansas and the Kansas Historical Society, this two-day gathering will explore โ€œ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐…๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐Š๐š๐ง๐ฌ๐š๐ฌ ๐‡๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒโ€ and highlight the continued work of preserving, interpreting, and sharing Kansas history across generations.

The summit will provide opportunities to connect, exchange ideas, explore the new Kansas Museum of History, and hear from distinguished voices, including Kansas author and historian Candice Millard.

The ๐—ก๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜‚๐˜€ ๐—›๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฆ๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜† is excited to share that this week, Executive Director Angela Bates, her sister Cheryl Jones, President Ashley Adams, Office Assistant Marilyn Gray, and members of the Kansas Black Farmers Association are being welcomed to Kentucky by the Sisters of Loretto at the Motherhouse in Nerinx, south of Lexington, on September 21.

Several years ago, the Sisters of Loretto visited Nicodemus and met with members of the Kansas Black Farmers Association to discuss their desire to make a land gift connected to the work of reparations. This visit continues that important dialogue and relationship.

On Tuesday, the group will travel with the Sisters to Georgetown, Kentucky, where they will visit historic sites connected to the legacy of slavery and the experiences of former Nicodemus settlers โ€” including the ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฆ ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต ๐˜™.๐˜”. ๐˜‘๐˜ฐ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ, where some ancestors of Nicodemus settlers were enslaved. The group will also visit the last remaining structure of the ๐˜Š๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ธ ๐˜๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜ด๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ, explore additional local historic sites, and attend an evening showing of the documentary:

It includes a special look at Kansas in 1776.

This milestone ๐€๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐š ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ“๐ŸŽ exhibit is a meaningful reminder of how the spirit of 1776 continues to live onโ€”right here in our own community.
