Marijuana in American History: Over the past 100 years, Americans have offered different versions of the narrative that marijuana is a gateway drug, but this theory is currently filing under increasing scrutiny. Historian Seth Blumenthal of Boston University elevates this historical development that also reveals the current state of marijuana legalization in America. A lecture on 10/19/17 at 7 pm at the Durant-Kenrick House and Grounds of Historic Newton. #marijuana #history #lecture #pot #newtonma #alternativemedicine #drugs #legalization #taboo #cannabis #controversy #weed #facts #research

In the 1880s, rising prosperity allowed more and more Americans to grow gardens designed for their beauty rather than their edibility. The Kenrick family cultivated fruits, flowers, plants, shrubs, and trees from around the globe in their Newton-based commercial nursery. The irises, heirloom roses, and peonies in the garden at the Durant-Kenrick House and Grounds are examples of plants grown here historically. John A. Kenrick was particularly fond of flowers and won many awards from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for his blossoms. See more of these award winning blooms in the museum's gardens before the hot summer fades them away.

In Bloom on Durant-Kenrick Grounds: Eastern Red Columbine or Wild Red Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) is a beautiful woodland wildflower that attracts long-tongued insects and hummingbirds. Interestingly it has also been noted that Native Americans rubbed the crushed seeds on the hands of men as a love charm. We are so lucky to have this and other beautiful blooms at the Durant-Kenrick House and Grounds.

Today!

Inspired by a range of objects and historical themes at the Durant-Kenrick House and Grounds, ceramics students have created sculptures for Historic Newton’s new exhibit, Sculpture Meets Nature: Outdoor Ceramics at the Museum. The work is on display outdoors at the Durant-Kenrick grounds from May 15 through June 10. Free tours of the show are offered June 3 at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., and June 10 at 2:30 p.m.

The 14 students in the Architectural Ceramics course at the Ceramics Program-Office for the Arts at Harvard and their teacher, award-winning sculptor Allison Newsome, visited Durant-Kenrick for inspiration. Their projects respond to subjects including Native Americans in the area and the people enslaved by the Durant family in the 18th century. The Kenrick family purchased the property in 1790 and established a thriving commercial nursery that introduced North American to varieties of pears and peaches that are still on the market today. One student created a series of pears in homage to this history. Another interpreted the Kenrick Nursery’s short-lived mulberry tree and silk production enterprise.

Andrés Alvarez Davila, who comes from Puerto Rico, used the “intricate timber framing” at the Durant-Kenrick House, built c. 1734, to inspire his sculpture. Everyday cooking implements captivated May Chau, who created a set of three sculptures that relate to them. “I was also inspired by the Durant-Kenrick’s history; how they developed the orchards; and how the family evolved to keep up with the land use,” she said.

Enjoy viewing all the intricate works of art that students created while strolling through the park and gardens at the Durant-Kenrick House and Grounds. The free exhibit is part of the Newton Festival of the Arts 2017.
