The Newport Art Museum was founded in 1912 on the belief that arts and culture have the power to bring diverse groups of individuals together, which ultimately promotes civic engagement and strengthens the social fabric of our communities. This core idea continues to inform our Museum's direction today. Our gallery spaces feature artworks from our permanent collection, as well as rotating exhibitions that showcase contemporary artists from around the world. The galleries are further animated with dynamic public programs, from artists’ talks and a Winter Speaker series to performances and films. Our robust art education initiatives serve diverse audiences, including underserved populations through our outreach programs, public and private schools, practicing artists, and students of all ages who take classes in our Museum School, which is housed in the Coleman Center for Creative Studies. Many of our activities are the result of collaborations with other arts, cultural, design, environmental, health, and social service organizations, all adding to a rich mix of experiences and perspectives. When you participate, our mission is activated. When your voices are heard, our work is relevant. Discover the art of Sailors’ Valentines on Saturday, November 7! 🐚 ⁠

Join us in the Cushing Gallery, surrounded by the oceanic works of Angel Otero, for a hands-on workshop with teaching artist Mandy Howe. ⁠

Popular from the 1830s through the late 19th century, Sailors’ Valentines are intricate shell mosaics housed in shallow wooden boxes. Their colorful, symmetrical designs feature hearts, flowers, anchors, and other nautical motifs, making them cherished mementos of love and friendship for sailors returning home after months or even years at sea.⁠

While romantic lore suggests that sailors crafted these gifts aboard their ships, historical evidence points to a different story. Most 19th-century Sailors’ Valentines are now known to have been made by Barbadian women, who arranged shells native to the Caribbean and others imported from abroad into elaborate geometric patterns. Sold to visiting sailors through shops in Bridgetown, Barbados, these beautiful objects became treasured gifts for loved ones back home. ⁠

A little witchcraft from the collection! 🐈‍⬛⁠

Meet The Witch by John Elliott, a 1909 drawing illustrating the story Whistling Bob and His Wicked Cat. With bat-like wings, a gown of withered leaves, and a plant root in hand, the witch confronts a black cat beneath a waning moon. The scene feels plucked from a dark fairy tale, full of strange magic.⁠

John Elliott was an artist, illustrator, and muralist, as well as the husband of Maud Howe Elliott, founding member of the Newport Art Association.⁠

Threaded throughout the Museum, PhoebeNewYork (), created by Libby Schoettle’s, moves between collage and installation quietly reshaping how we encounter and interpret the exhibition.⁠

Drawing on the visual languages of fashion, media, and text, Phoebe shifts between performance, humor, and vulnerability. Part narrator, part trickster, she invites us to consider identity as something fluid, play as an open-ended act, and the stories we tell ourselves about who we are.⁠

Coming February 2027: James Baker: An Aesthetic Life ✨️⁠

The Newport Art Museum is pleased to announce James Baker: An Aesthetic Life, an exhibition celebrating the life and work of Newport-born artist, educator, and collector James Baker.⁠
⁠
Working across painting, drawing, printmaking, and photography, Baker draws inspiration from the natural world, exploring the interplay of color, surface, light, and abstraction. His decades-long artistic practice reflects a deep connection to Newport’s coastal landscape and a lifelong commitment to experimentation and close observation.⁠
⁠
Beyond the studio, Baker’s career has encompassed decades of teaching, collecting, and curatorial work, including a 1996 exhibition of works by Joseph Beuys at the Newport Art Museum. In 1999, the Museum organized a thirty-year retrospective of Baker’s work.⁠
⁠
James Baker: An Aesthetic Life offers an opportunity to revisit the work of an artist whose creative life has been deeply intertwined with Newport and its artistic community.⁠

Join us for an evening celebrating the remarkable life and artistry of Jane Pickens!🎶🎞️

Jane Pickens was an American singer, actress, vocal arranger, and painter whose creative life encompassed both the performing and visual arts. She rose to prominence with the Pickens Sisters in the 1930s, later performing on Broadway, radio, and television while also developing a painting practice that included floral still lifes and gallery exhibitions. A longtime Newport resident and philanthropist, she became the namesake of the Jane Pickens Theater () in 1974.

This program features live performances of music she composed, along with a talk tracing her journey from her childhood in Macon, Georgia to her years as a beloved Newport philanthropist.

Following the presentation, guests are invited to a reception showcasing selections of her visual artwork.

This event is held in collaboration with Historic Music of Newport ().
