Well, that's all folks! The last of the Maritime Tree came down this morning. If you were one of the supporters who decorated a life ring for the tree and would like to have your ring back, you can come by the museum this weekend during our open hours to pick it up. OR come by in the next week Monday, Wednesday, or Friday between 10am and 2pm, and ring the doorbell in the back. Thank you all for making this a bright and joyful end of the year!

The Newburyport Marine Society was founded in 1772 in the style and manner of similar societies founded earlier in places like Boston and Salem. Its membership was composed of the present and former shipmasters of Newburyport. As with other such organizations, the principal objectives of the society were to gather navigational information by the members’ comings and goings, and to raise common funds for the relief of their members and their families should they befall the hardships so common to those who lived their lives at sea.
In the late eighteenth and nineteenth century, such organizations existed for a variety of dangerous or physically demanding professions, which otherwise lacked any financial security in case of sickness, death, or other hardship. These organizations would often have their own libraries, or programs for the edification of their membership. The Newburyport Marine Society had their own museum.
Located at their headquarters on State Street, much of the collection of exotic objects brought home from long voyages abroad, served as the basis of the Custom House Maritime Museum collection via the Historical Society of Old Newbury (now the Museum of Old Newbury) when it first opened.

Happy New Year to all! As we begin the New Year, the Custom House Maritime Museum would like to take the opportunity to express our gratitude to all those who helped us through the past year. Through the generosity of our patrons, and the hard work of our staff and volunteers at the museum, we made improvements to the historic customhouse building, revitalized our exhibits, and introduced new programming while keeping our doors open in what we all know has been a trying time for many cultural institutions. We could not have done this without the outpouring of support from the community, which will allow us to continue to chart a path forward in the new year. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. We wish you and yours a safe and happy 2021.

With our very warmest regards,

The Board of Directors, Staff, and Volunteers of the CHMM

We would like to take moment to remember a dear friend of the Custom House, Nathaniel Clapp, who recently passed away. He was a docent at the museum, and moreover a wonderful person to be around. He was always friendly and happy, had a great sense of humor, and a ready conversation. Nat was loved by all of us at the museum, and he will be dearly missed. http://thelocalne.ws/2020/12/07/nathaniel-clapp-obituary/

Good morning, one and all!

We hope this finds you well. Today is Giving Tuesday, an international day of charitable giving. Nonprofit, educational institutions like the Custom House Maritime Museum are working hard to make sure we can continue our mission of historical preservation and education. We are engaged in ongoing building and repair projects to preserve the historic Customhouse building, as well as cleaning, organizing, and keeping safe our unique artifact collections, and historical documents. We are adding new educational content, and inclusive historical interpretation in anticipation of welcoming back you and your family. We are also expanding distanced and virtual events, and creating content on our social media pages to continue to stay connected.

We know you love this place as much as we do, and we need your help in order to weather this storm. Please consider a donation in any amount on this Giving Tuesday by going to our donation page donate.thechmm.org

Thank you all very much. Be safe, and be healthy.

My life ring is lookin' good!

Yes, life is getting back to normal slowwwly. This is wonderful! Reopening the Museum!
Hi, Michael McGinnis here. I’m trying to contact Jack Santos regarding the Pest Houses and more important to me, the possible carving/writing on the rock by Perry Way. (I think). I have been searching the banks of the Merrimack for many years and have found some native artifacts confirmed by an archaeologist who gave a lecture on The Algonquins that I attended. My email is [email protected] phone number 1-978-270-2004. Anytime after 11:00 AM. You can also private message me on Facebook. I love this kind of stuff and would appreciate seeing it. Thanks in advance, Michael
What treasures lie hidden deep in the custom house archives??? Hopefully none like these..
I would like to invite everyone to the October 5th event "Throwing Back; The Massachusetts Pottery Legacy" from 11 to 12:30 at the Custom House. This all ages, family friendly, unique event, would be of interest to everyone who is loves story-telling, pottery making and history as I relate to the current exciting redware, stoneware and art pottery exhibit, "Potters on the Merrimac, A Century of New England Ceramics" in a fast paced, entertaining performance. This program received funding from from the Newburyport Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency. I am a Mass Cultural Council "Keeper of Tradition", a Mass CC Gold Star recipient and awarded over 900 LCC grants for my pottery events. I am a pottery demonstrator at Historic Deerfield and at the Old Colony Museum in Taunton. My schedule is found at
**Help Support the Sailors' Snug Harbor Cemetery Memorial Campaign** @SSHMarinersGenealogy The Descendants of Sailors’ Snug Harbor Mariners have been reaching out to New York and New England Heritage (Historical and Genealogical) Societies, Museums, Military Veterans Groups, and Concerned Citizens, to invite them to join a Letters of Support Campaign to support their efforts to gain access to the old Sailors’ Snug Harbor Cemetery on Staten Island to honor their Ancestors, and all of the 6,500 Merchant and Naval Mariners interred there (1834-1976), by installing a Memorial Monument (Obelisk) and holding an annual Memorial Service. Some of the Mariners were famous Sea Captains and some sailed on famous Merchant and Naval ships dating back to the American Revolution. Many were just average seamen whom sailed and endured for many years on the sea under arduous conditions. A significant amount of the Mariners were from New England. https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2244490/sailors-snug-harbor-cemetery Sadly, the Sailors' Snug Harbor Cemetery is devoid of gravestones or markers, except for 15 remaining gravestones. The Cemetery is closed and not open to the public. The Board of Trustees of Sailors' Snug Harbor have rejected the Descendants' requests to access the SSH Cemetery to honor their Ancestors. https://nypost.com/2018/12/29/caretakers-shoot-down-plans-for-monument-for-fallen-sailors/ The Descendants are collecting Letters of Support to persuade the Trustees of Sailors’ Snug Harbor to change their decision. You can help support the Descendants by writing a Letter of Support using the Support Letter Writing Instructions at the following link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1sZv5VFLNWw0HA-pW2i33RhbgVFQ6oExx
