A pleasant National Cupcake Day to you and yours.
Let's celebrate with some ... history!
The idea behind making tiny cakes was elaborated in ‘American Cookery’, a 1796 cookbook by Amelia Simmons. However, the word ‘cupcake’ itself did not come about until 1828, when celebrated author and cooking expert Eliza Leslie published her cookbook ‘Receipts’, which included the recipe for the first cupcake.
You can get that recipe here --> https://www.divinespecialties.com/brief-history-cupcake/
A pretty cool tradition coming out of the Great Lakes!

Thank you Newburyport Magazine for including us in your most recent issue! We look forward to seeing everyone on Friday, December 2nd at 5:30 pm for this year's tree lighting.
Have you ever seen our Mulliken clock? Jonathan Mulliken (1746-1782) tall-case clock that is one of the gems of our museum’s collection.
Made here in Newburyport around the time of our War of Independence, it represents a fine example of American clockmaking from the period. Ticking mechanical timekeeping originated in Europe more than seven centuries ago, and until the 19th-century Industrial Revolution, clocks and watches were at the height of hand-crafted technological sophistication and complexity.
By the 18th-century when Jonathan worked at his bench, clockmaking was a respected craft that employed highly skilled artisans but also saw the beginnings of mass-production techniques that offered standard designs and parts to its practitioners.
We're excited to have Ghlee Woodworth join us on Museum Store Sunday to sign copies of her new book!
She'll be in the museum store from 1 - 4 pm. This book makes a great gift for Newburyport History enthusiasts!
In 2019 we had "Voices of Christmas Past," based on the nineteenth century writing of Sarah Emery, in the Moseley Gallery.

Kids love it.
Adults love it.

As many of you know, this past spring we lost Bill Harris. In this brief video Doug Muir, past chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Newburyport Maritime Society, offers words of tribute for William Harris. Bill Harris was a strong supporter and member of the Maritime Society, its Maritime Museum, and an open waterfront. Bill was a past board member of the Newburyport Maritime Society. Bill's tireless advocacy and legal acumen helped the Newburyport Waterfront become what it is today. His key contribution was the research and establishment of the "Wayes to the Water", and his vocal support for the establishment and ongoing support of the Museum.
