Newark Landmarks in the City of Newark, NJ - the third oldest city in America. NPLC offers support to organizations and individuals for historic structures.

NPLC helps with historic preservation applications and offers plaques to structures and monuments that receive national, state, and city landmark status. We also partner with other organizations within the City of Newark for events and activities, who have similar interest in preserving the historic integrity of Newark. Annual events highlights the work of selected individuals. NPLC is a member based organization. Memberships are renewed annually. NPLC publishes NPLC NEWS a bi-annual newsletter. Author Rick Geffken will tell the story of Captain Joshua Huddy and his fierce rival, a runaway enslaved Black man named Colonel Tye. Their feud escalated into an international incident, nearly derailing peace talks until Marie Antoinette intervened.

2026 FOREST HILL HOUSE & GARDEN TOUR

The House and Garden Tour is returning to Newark’s Forest Hill Historic District. Step inside some of the beautiful historic homes and stunning gardens of this serene residential community adjacent to beautiful Branch Brook Park.

Enjoy a self-guided tour on June 6th, from 11am to 4 pm. Stroll or take a free trolley ride, courtesy of Essex County, to see a variety of homes including Victorian, Tudor, Colonial, and Georgian, and their stunning outdoor spaces. This tour is a must for all historic house and garden aficionados. Booklets with maps can be picked up on the day of the event at the Ballantine Gates, Ballantine Parkway and Lake Street.

Maxine N. Lurie is a professor at Seton Hall University. She has written extensively about early American and New Jersey history.

Taking Sides in Revolutionary New Jersey, published in 2022, explores the reasons why some people chose to side with the Continentals, and others chose to remain loyal to the British government.
