Culturunners CULTURUNNERS collaborates with traveling artists to share stories and create art across contested bo

Developed in collaboration with an international network of artists and institutions from the Middle East, Europe and the United States, CULTURUNNERS is an unconventional and independent model of cultural exchange and production, one which combines the localised rituals of an artist road trip with the far-reaching power of communications technology. CULTURUNNERS prioritizes direct encounters and storytelling, believing in the power of art to inspire empathy and uncover alternative histories across physical and psychological borders. Since CULTURUNNERS launched in September 2014, artists and curators from the US, Saudi Arabia, Iran, UK, Turkey, Bahrain, Kuwait, Palestine, Syria, South Africa and Morocco have participated in programs at The Rothko Chapel in Houston, Texas; Louisiana State University; The Middle East Institute in Washington DC; ISCP Residencies in Brooklyn, The Armory Show and Columbia University in New York, MIT in Boston, the United Nations Headquarters in New York. While travelling with CULTURUNNERS, artists take part in exhibitions, talks and workshops with partner institutions; have full use of a state-of-the-art studio featuring digital and traditional materials and equipment; and broadcast artists’ ‘Dispatches’ from the road via CULTURUNNERS interactive website.

"Textile Zombie"🧶

When artist transformed into an 8-foot textile zombie known as Dead White Man, he became a "monster of post-consumer imperialism" and pushed the concept of rubbish on your doorstep a step further.

The cooperation with The Or Foundation was inspired by the Ghanaian expression "obroni wawu," which translates to "dead white man's clothing" and is used by market vendors in Kantamanto Market to describe their inventory of surplus items from the global north.

The Unit is hosting this two-day meeting dedicated to the role of the arts in health care, featuring a multi-country pilot study called "Music and Motherhood". The event is a collaboration with the Jameel Arts & Health Lab and supported by Central Denmark Region.

Interweaving music, live sketches, poetry, and arts breaks in between panel session, presentations, and collaborative group discussions, the meeting will deep dive into the potential for culture and the arts in supporting health systems and improving health and wellbeing.

Participants include cultural and health policy makers, global experts in the field, project partners, and of course, arts practitioners: from musicians to visual artists, from dancers to poets and hospital clowns!

A part of the programme will focus on “Music and Motherhood” – a multi-country, WHO-led implementation study of an arts intervention supporting mothers who experience post-partum depression. Built around group singing sessions specifically designed for affected mothers, the project was conducted in three WHO Europe Member States (Romania, Italy and Denmark) to determine the feasibility of implementing the intervention in other cultural contexts.

Thank you to as production partner for the Lab’s 2023 Healing Arts program.
