Weeksville Heritage Center Weeksville Heritage Center (WHC) is an historic house museum. Weeksville is as dynamic as it was when its founders created it.

We celebrate the history of Weeksville, a free and intentional African American community founded in 1838 in Brooklyn. Weeksville Heritage Center is a multi-dimensional museum that celebrates the history of Weeksville, one of the first free African American communities in the country, established in 1838. Located in Central Brooklyn, the mission of Weeksville Heritage Center is to document, preserve and interpret the history of free African, Caribbean, and African American communities in Weeksville, Brooklyn, and beyond to create and inspire innovative, contemporary uses of history through research, education, the arts, and civic engagement. Drawing inspiration from the history of the community, WHC is known for the guided tours of its Hunterfly Road historic homes, public programs such as the Garden Party Concert Series, Brilliant Corners Jazz Concert, Farmers Market, Emancipation Day Celebrations, Vaudeville Family Day, ongoing oral history projects, and so much more. Walk in tours of the historic houses are Tuesday-Friday at 3:00 PM. Our public programming season begins in May/June with our annual jazz concert and weekend farmers market, and culminates in July with musical performances every Saturday, along with film screenings and lecture series. Special events are announced throughout the year. To learn more visit us at www.weeksvillesociety.org.

We are excited to experience Kambaba Jasper () at Jeffrey Zeigler's We Were Fridays program at Weeksville on October 17.

Kambaba's sound workshop asks: How can we use sound design and audio signal processing to understand signal flow in life and technology? How do ancestral memories modulate our current ways of being? The workshop is a hands-on exploration of synthesis, anthropology, creativity, and composition — open to all.

In Kambaba's own words:

"My process is a shrine to sacred inspiration and a tool to venerate, transmit, and create with. My understanding of signal flow provides a framework of understanding systems, in a way that is essential for my ideas of liberation."

Free and open to all. October 17.

We Were Fridays is Jeffrey Zeigler's decade-in-the-making exploration of Gullah Geechee heritage, cultural memory, and diaspora. On October 17, it comes to Weeksville Heritage Center, where Tendaji Bailey leads the conversation at the heart of the day.

A Gullah Geechee native of Port Royal and St. Helena Island, SC, Tendaji founded the Gullah Geechee Futures Project. He will facilitate the community conversation that brings participants together before the evening performance.

"During the Great Migration, Gullah Geechee families made Brooklyn their new home, and they made sure to bring their culture with them. This day of workshops gives us an opportunity to remember, celebrate, and create, centering the spirit of our community." — Tendaji Bailey
