About the self-portrait.

‘Whenever I use my body as a support, it is with the idea of ​​talking about issues related to society and that concern many or everyone. I do not even intend to create portraits of the individuals that make it up, rather they are comments about it, and always with the certainty that I am also part of the whole.

The central issue of my photographic series is the relationship established between individuals and institutions (family, education, political parties, religion ...). I also pay attention to the contradiction that is created when we try to preserve our individuality while having to deal with our status as social entities.

The term self-portrait has always seemed suspicious to me because it can make us believe that there is a version without omissions, more truthful, than the one others might have. There may be no more distorted image about someone than the one created by themselves.’

HECTOR FRANK | PORTRAIT SERIES

‘ These series of portraits that I have been doing since my first forays into painting show an obsession with the human figure, but not with the classical portrait and it is evident. It's something inside, it's a desire to find an essence that I'm just beginning to see. I can say that these figures are also a mystery to me, they emerge from a part of my mind that tells me how to do it, but not why. I go with my instincts in the creative process but I also make conscious decisions to guide the final result and match the two parts.

This last series has a great variety of tones and colors that are intended to show how we are depending on the environment and the space we inhabit. The selection of expressions and backgrounds in each work depends on my state of mind, the fact of sleeping and waking up can change the whole panorama.

The creative thread in my case is very fragile and the daily chore strains it and often breaks it, so a new series is born looking for something that I did not say in the previous one. The characters in my portraits strip me bare before the viewer and I can't hide anything, you can see that incredible mix of cultures that made me what I am a Cuban artist. ’
