In the late 1990s, the artist continued to explore the infinite possibilities of head castings: for instance, the form could be either erect or curled, and the proportions could be reduced or distorted. Subsequently, Pondick's hybrid sculptures extended beyond merely human appearances or animal forms, proliferating vigorously into creations and continuations related to other life forms. The following excerpt is from the interview text "Rona Pondick Interviewed by Barbara Wally". Barbara Wally, a renowned Austrian art educator and curator, was the former director of the Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts.

"Repetition is a part of nature. Some trees have thousands of branches and blossoms. If you look at growth patterns in trees they form spirals. There is a continuous seasonal cycle where leaves die, fall away, and grow back. We take this life cycle for granted, but the patterns in tiles, rugs, and ceramics, and the structures in architecture and bridges, all come from nature. Repetition is central in pattern and is implicit in every structure. It is a fundamental part of life. "—all quotes above are from Rona Pondick, the artist, spoken in conversation.

Happy first day of summer!

Featured in our newly opened lower-level exhibition space, New York-based fine artist Brad Darcy embodies his love for nature through minimal yet striking outlines and contours. For the past 20 years, Darcy has created drawings in his notebooks by venturing into the depths of his psyche, bringing forth his meditation on the natural world and human mind through intentional sparseness and black-and-white strokes.

“Darcy & Darcy: In Monochrome,” featuring Tom Darcy and Brad Darcy, is now on view at Nunu Fine Art New York (381 Broome Street, New York, NY 10013).

Happy Juneteenth from Nunu Fine Art!

On June 19, 1865, freedom and justice prevailed when the last group of enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were finally freed, marking the end of slavery in the US.

Today, we celebrate and honor the triumphs of Freedom Day, while reflecting on the persisting battles for racial equality.

Our current exhibition, “Darcy & Darcy: In Monochrome,” highlights deep-seated American social injustices that remain today. Tom Darcy’s satirical political cartoons highlight absurdities in political life while prompting public discourse on controversial issues, such as Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination.

“King: We suggest you commit suicide… or else!
‘Tell me again about your impartial investigation of my death…’”

Thomas F. Darcy created this cartoon between 1969 and 1980.

Nunu Fine Art New York(381 Broome Street, New York, NY 10013)展出。

"In 1998, I made a mold from my own head and combined it with a stylized dog's body that I hand modeled. I had an epiphany: these hybrid animal/human forms go back to Neolithic times and appear through every period in history. At the same time, I began incorporating my hands, arms, and legs in these hybrid forms. Dog was my first animal/human sculpture" -Rona Pondick. Excerpt from "Head For The Trees," published in the April/May 2021 issue of Patron Magazine. This series of interviews was personally conducted and written by Dr. Catherine Craft, curator at the Nasher Sculpture Center in the United States.

Hybrid and Metamorphosis—besides at the apearances of his works—equally present in Pondick’s series of casts: just as the artist proudly claims himself a quite ‘Material Holic’, her fifty-year career has involved countless material objects. For instance, in the late 1980's, Pondick gained lots of attention from her solo exhibition 'BED' and soft sculptures; To the 1990's, she combined teeth with handmade spheres, such as in ‘Dirt Head’ (1997). However, starting in 1998, after continuous trial and error and technical adjustments, the artist for the first time used his own head as prototype to create a mold. After that she has attempted to connect the skull shape with various imagery, like curvaceous animal bodies or tree forms. Through the exquisite thoughts of Pondick, these sculpture elements transforming into diverse, fantastic masterpieces.

Variation in skull's shape and proportion has been an ongoing experiment for the artist over two decades. Sometimes it involves local reshaping—removing ears, hair, or neck; sometimes it fundamentally distorts shapes, exaggerating differences between heads and other objects. Through the 'Body parts' on her sculptures, she hopes viewers will use their own bodily perception and personal experiences as catalysts to feel the imagery and emotions of works.

"Eerily beautiful, pristinely perfect."

"It seems as soft as balloons yet fragile as porcelain, and it first gathers itself into a tiny head strangled by billowing folds … Squeezed to bursting, this piece is a visceral metaphor of birth, death, or something equally intolerable and narrowly escaped." - Kim Levin, “Sculpture” a publication of the International Sculptrue Center, Vol.32 No.10, Winter 2013.

The two artworks, "Pillow Head" and "White White Swirl," are positioned diagonally from each other, with one high and the other low, they are separated by a white wall in the center of the exhibition space, forming a diagonal line that spans the room.

In "Pillow Head", Pondick tightly integrates a minuscule skull with an extremely inflated covering, creating a subtle visual experience through the grotesque exaggeration of form and imagery.

White White Swirl is made from cast acrylic and pigmented resin. Rona Pondick uses these materials to contrast transparency with opacity, making some forms clearly discernible while others seem to vanish.

In White White Swirl, Pondick’s tiny heads grow out of twisting forms that resemble a body turning itself inside out. Exposed at the top and submerged in the acrylic block, the head and body are mirrored like Narcissus, the character from Greek mythology who saw his own reflection in a pool of water. The encased turbulent form suggests swimming, dreaming, birth, and drowning. Are these twisting forms intestines morphing into a head, or a tornado of intense emotion?

In Rona Pondick's studio, the shelves are filled with numbered molds, used for casting resin heads and bodies for her artworks. In "Warped White," Pondick’s oversized head appears to be resting, sleeping, or emerging from a pool of white. The sculpture sits low on the ground, simultaneously feeling weighty and appearing to hover. Pondick enlarged and warped the shape of the head by hand, so that it suggests a monumental egg, implying metamorphosis, and a range of meanings around birth and death, rest and growth, stasis, and change.

For the last four decades, Pondick has consistently experimented with materials, techniques, processes, and imagery, focusing on relationships between biography and mythology, the psychological and the bodily, the uncanny and the familiar, in ways that suggest the deep emotional complexity of human existence. We warmly invite you to visit the exhibition and experience Pondick's stunning works.

Special thanks to Jamie Martinez for his in-depth interview with Dickson, discussing his early years, creative process, and the current exhibition.

“I have always been fascinated by nature, by space, by outer space, and curious about science, religion, and the mysteries of our existence that are beyond our intellect. For example, even before I was an artist, I would spend time alone, staring out to sea, overwhelmed by the power and vastness of it, by infinite space, and wondering what is out there.”

This excerpt is from Martinez’s interview, published on ARTEFUSE. The link to the complete text: https://artefuse.com/2024/05/30/interview-with-rodney-dickson-its-not-the-ride-its-the-rider/

Please join us for the opening reception of “Darcy & Darcy: In Monochrome,” a two-person exhibition featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist Thomas F. Darcy (1932-2000) and his son, contemporary New York-based fine artist Brad Darcy.

The exhibition comprises over 120 of Tom Darcy’s original editorial cartoons from the postwar decades, covering topics ranging from the Vietnam War to racism and nuclear arms. The gallery’s newly opened lower-level exhibition space will feature over 40 of Brad Darcy’s black-and-white works on paper as well as a selection of his notebooks from the past twenty years.

Driven by the plight of the less fortunate, Tom Darcy won critical esteem for his highly original and impeccably sharp perception of the contemporary milieu. His witty political commentary spurred viewers to actively reflect upon the issues he addressed and to formulate their own conclusions.

Brad Darcy’s intimate exploration of one’s consciousness through automatic drawing exhibits a distinct visual humour that reflects his love for nature and his fascination with what it is to be human. Spontaneously applying ink to paper for 20 to 40 seconds, he generates whimsical images to capture his multifaceted thoughts and feelings.

In the encased pieces the head splits and multiplies, warps, and sometimes disappears with every step a viewer takes moving around them. The color is radiant and translucent from some viewpoints, and diffuse and vanishing like smoke from others. The translucence of the color strengthens the sense of becoming.

Dickson did not let that stop him, however, as he continued to capture enthralling portraits of the many friends he had met throughout his travels by drawing upon his memory and digital photographs.

Four days remain to see “Paintings,” on view through June 1.

Resin Color Samples 2013-2021.
“In 2013, I started experimenting with pigmenting resin to see what kind of
color palette was possible. I still make these color samples today as
I'm casting. As you can see, the samples have information written on
them, so I can replicate the color ratios when needed.”-Rona Pondick

After watching “Rona Pondick: Selected Work 2008-2023”, we are honored to invite you to go to visit the other marvelous piece as well:

"Small Yellow Yellow Oxide" , at the basement of our gallery, Pondick's head of artwork rendered in radiant translucent color. The heads look like they are floating, dreaming, embryonic, suffocating, drowning or dying-po their own fate- or giving birth to life.

Rona Pondick’s beautiful and disturbing chimeras feature human heads cast from the artist’s own, integrated into plant, animal, and inanimate forms that embody, or perhaps re-body, the psychological interiority of life’s double-edged sword. The refinement of these creations recalls the polished perfection of classical Greek as well as Renaissance sculpture, while their disturbing, thought-provoking conception brings to mind the syntheses of Kafka, Ovid, classical mythology, and other religious iconographies.

The sinuous curves of the woman-tree hybrid in “Dwarfed White Jack,” for instance, suggest a female leg and torso; in place of pinecones, its branches cradle heads, which look, from a distance, like fists, evoking the phoenix-like Jack Pine, whose resistant cones are opened by fire. This being may be trapped, like her mythological predecessors, in arboreal immobility, as well as twisted and dwarfed like a bonsai in her shallow tray, but she is also endowed with the power of creation after devastation, enhanced by the multiple perspectives of her numerous points of view.

The eponymous emerging “Pillow Head’s” straining posture and pained expression suggest an arduous process of differentiation, as if the mind were trying to emancipate itself from the body at the very site of its independence. Pondick’s materials evoke her themes of metamorphosis and transcendence, like the bronze painted to a glossy sheen to suggest the pliant fragility of inflated rubber in “Pillow Head” and “Navel,” and the counterpoint between the animacy of her forms and the sterile ethereality of their pure white polish. The struggles of these human hybrids enact both the ordeal of mortal limitation and the possibility of transcendence.

“This is a rare artist, a painter of substance – brave, adventurous, and wholly committed. He has produced memorable images in a range of mediums and will no doubt to continue to do so. Rodney and I have exchanged images and thoughts for five decades, a correspondence which has enlivened my advancing years. I hope to live to see his work reach an ever-widening public, as I believe it will and certainly deserves to do.” – Mike Knowles

Mike Knowles is a practicing artist educated at the Liverpool College of Art and the Slade School, London. He has taught in various art schools, primarily at the Liverpool College of Art, now part of Liverpool John Moores University, where he was a tutor to the young, headstrong Rodney Dickson.

Our Story

Nunu Fine Art was established in the summer of 2014. Its Mandarin name adapted from the IT equipment “router” representing the gallery’s vision to act as a platform for converging and sharing information, just as the device does, gathering the cream of essence of European, North American and South East Asian contemporary art, and providing a brand new sphere for Taiwanese contemporary art lovers. Nunu Fine Art not only represents internationally recognized artists long endorsed by museums such as the MET, MoMA, le Centre Pompidou, Tate London, but also mid-career artists from Taiwan, South East and North East Asia. Most importantly, we look up to historic art patrons and how they have discovered and nurtured generation after generation of brilliant new artists.
