It's May! It's Spring time. We have entered our 10th year of Talkingstick. Thank you to everyone who celebrated with us.

This month, Talkingstick is 2 days before Mother's Day, so we have decided to focus on the topic of the mother. Right now we face many challenges in the world, including the devastating Earthquake which has deeply affected Nepal, and neighboring countries in the Himalayan region. The Rubin Museum staff and visitors feel this intensely as we are so tied to this part of the world.

But we need to carry on, and while doing all we can, one thing we must do is continue to love and send that love to Nepal. And what better way to access that feeling than by thinking of the enduring, nurturing, unconditional love of mother.

This month we have three guests, Emily James, Shane Butler, and Rachel Marco - Havens.

We have said goodbye in this realm to our dear and beautiful friend, AlySun Panichi. Here she is with us at February Talkingstick 2014, with guests gathered around the spiral staircase, hearing her words about singing and the voice, leading a call and response. We are all so lucky to have had time with her. What a beautiful, beautiful one. Fly high, Aly.

Happy February!!

This month Talkingstick is the day before Valentine's Day! Along with Master Lee and Mr. Patrick, we have guest storytelling from Jennifer Glick and the New York Bulgarian Women's Choir, Yasna Voices.

Meet the guests:

NY BULGARIAN WOMEN'S CHOIR YASNA VOICES

Yasna Voices is a diverse, joyful, expansive group of singers, sharing a passion for ensemble harmony, folk traditions and experimentation. Weaving together traditional Bulgarian village songs with artfully arranged a cappella pieces in the style of Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares and spontaneous group improvisation, the ensemble reveals the disarming power and intimacy of the unaccompanied voice. Their reinterpretations of ancient songs tell timeless tales of sweet or forbidden love, horses and wild mountains, potent wine, pepper planting, the secrets of the moon, and the sun's falling in love with a beautiful girl and her song.

Using space creatively, Yasna Voices has collaborated with dance and theater ensembles, and multimedia artists, and is equally at home at folk festivals, modern art museums, or community events. Bringing a rich amalgam of individual heritages, the singers come from Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Poland, Russia, and the USA.

To connect further with Yasna Voices and their story visit them at yasnavoices.org

JENNIFER GLICK

Jennifer Glick is a storyteller and performer who has been working in various venues in New York City since 1997. You can find her on twitter @glickjen, you can see/hear samples of her work at http://glickjen.weebly.com/

HAPPY NEW YEAR! The year of the Green Wood Sheep. This is so beautiful. A year of grace and power is here. Who better to ring it in than our dear friends, Debe Dalton, and Michael Jay.

DEBE DALTON

Debe Dalton arrived several years ago to the Antihoot at Sidewalk in New York City. It seems like she's been there every night since transforming from a shy, hesitant performer into a full-fledged Antistar. Power chords on a banjo. A 56-year old folkpunk with multihued hair and some of the best songs sung in the sweetest voice this side of the (or any side of the Mississippi!

MICHAEL JAY

Michael Jay has trained extensively in the healing arts. He is dedicated to helping others thrive through both his private wellness practice and volunteer work.
Recently he has reinvigorated his commitment to using sound for its immense healing power and has been studying with the Grand GongMaster Don Conreaux. He performs regularly around the city, with the Brothers of the Gong(https://www.facebook.com/BrothersOfTheGONG) and also with his collective SVAHA (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sound-Vision-Alchemy-for-Harmonic-Attunement/921267367889041)
