UPSTATE PHOTOGRAPHY BIENNIAL - Kingston, NY
[Part 2]

“The first Upstate Photography Biennial celebrates the diverse and vital photographic work being made by artists in upstate New York. The thirty-nine photographers included in this Biennial are part of a thriving and rapidly expanding creative community, built on the bedrock of the rich cultural history of the region. Included in the exhibition are students, recent graduates, self-taught photographers, artists at the beginning of their careers, and artists who have been recognized for their work for decades.
These artists approach the medium in many different and innovative ways, using historic photographic processes and materials like tintypes, pinhole cameras, glass-plate negatives, and cyanotypes. They engage with other artforms including sculpture, drawing, performance, and poetry, their projects exploring migration and diaspora, family and community bonds, landscapes and cultural memory, and materiality and archival excavation. Seen together, the work in this Biennial highlights the persistent power of contemporary photography and the rigor and inquisitiveness with which it is being pursued by artists living and working here.

[Part 1]

“The first Upstate Photography Biennial celebrates the diverse and vital photographic work being made by artists in upstate New York.
