Coming to our presentation in Miami is a new work by Roger Winter. As Barry Schwabsky writes: “A contemporary of Lois Dodd and Alex Katz, Winter is evidently one of their few peers who likewise splits the difference between formalism and observation in order to ask questions about the very activity of picturing and picture making.”

Thank you Artforum for noting Jiang’s exhibition, The Shiver a Must See!

Barry Schwabsky noted in his Artforum review: “Jiang Cheng sees the world in a face, and sees the unworldly, too. Each of the nine paintings are zoomed in so closely on a single countenance that its features became the elements of a cosmos. And yet, while this intense focus implies a probing, even passionately inquisitive gaze that’s trying to become as intimate as possible with its object, that sublime attention is never returned.”

Excited for our Miami presentation next month with new paintings by Pei Wang. 🌴

Like the great artists of the Beaux Arts school, Pei Wang began his painting practice by copying the Old Masters, and now draws upon more arcane source materials – film stills, found images, personal cellphone photos. In these paintings, cultural memory and personal history intertwine, not only with one another, but also with techniques and materials drawn from the long tradition of oil painting.

Visages emerge only to recede again in Jiang Cheng’s paintings, while the canvases themselves bear evidence of meandering gestures and halting reversals. Superimpositions reminiscent of Francis Picabia’s “transparencies” suggest simultaneity and flux, prismatically rendering a multitude of subjects.

Many of these canvases are populated by eyes – emblematic of both seeing and being seen – underscoring the reciprocal and even adversarial structures that vision produces.

From narcissistic gym selfies to the toxic effects of microplastics — Max Lakin’s review of Preslav Kostov’s Soft Focus in November’s Artforum is a must-read. “Despite Kostov’s splicing, his bodies remained intact, possessed of an unnaturally pliable flesh that never ruptured.”

A must-see exhibition: Madeleine Ray Hines’ As Is, open through October. 🩶 As the critic Jeppe Ugelvig has noted, “paintings, like shoes, have come to live increasingly as virtual commodities on the internet – lingering in the flattened ether of gallery sales PDFs, social media posts, illustrations in online reviews.”

Madeleine Ray Hines’ “As Is” considers, perhaps melancholically, the notion of the heel as a circulating commodity increasingly bought and sold through the mediation of digital imagery, not dissimilar from painting itself. 👠

Preslav Kostov’s “Soft Focus” is an Artforum must-see! Drawing ourselves somewhat closer, we might say that Kostov’s innumerable bodies document the ways in which temporally-determined gestures, movements, dispositions engendered by the human form assert themselves visually and, in fact, construct the world. 🌍

Preslav Kostov’s solo presentation “Soft Focus” will open at the gallery next Friday, September 5, 6-8pm! ✨ Each of Kostov’s paintings begins with a horizon: faded green grounding the bottom, sky blue lifting the space above. From this first mark, a world of above, below, and in-between unfolds. Rather than seeking neat resolution, Kostov leans into distortion and partial recognition — figures populating a scaffolded space where familiarity and ambiguity meet.

A landscape of beginnings, endlessly reimagined. 🌿💭
