We are delighted to have been asked to represent the Estate of the British abstract painter, Trevor Bell (1930-2017).
We were immensely proud of all the exhibitions we held of Trevor’s work when he was alive, in our galleries in Cork Street and Albemarle Street in London, and in Greene Street and Madison Avenue in New York. We now have exclusive access to the wonderful selection of Trevor’s works that remain in his studio in Cornwall.
22 paintings that we initially selected to show have just gone on view in Savile Row at prices from £2,500 to £10,000.

The Four Seasons
Duncan McCormick at Art SG, Singapore 2024
18 - 21 January

We are proud to present on our booth FC32 a solo show of paintings by the British artist Duncan McCormick. The curated show traces the changing of the seasons, in colour and subject but above all in its changing moods - from lyrical and elegiac, through quietly humorous and optimistic to raucous and celebratory.

EDWARD POVEY : HUMAN

I am the only child of a merchant seaman and a practical shopgirl, born in London shortly after the Second World War. I grew up looking across stiffly ironed tablecloths at cups of tea, the three of us sitting around in gaslight in my great aunt’s house. So, this is how I see things. When I think of us forked people, I always see us around tables, with crockery and food balancing precariously, much like my childhood. I find it both sweet and sad, and also true

OPENING TOMORROW | OCT 5 | 6-8 PM

EDWARD POVEY : HUMAN

Povey's DÉCOUSU is French for ‘disjointed’. During 2022 Edward Povey searched for ways to simplify his work, placing more responsibility on the figure to carry the exploration that occurs in the painting, rather than relying upon objects and settings to transmit his mixed emotions. DÉCOUSUE typifies this shift of emphasis, looking in one direction towards a more elegant future whilst also looking backwards to an earlier work called PERSONAL ENTANGLEMENT painted in 2007, depicting a figure in an impossible pose, signifying internal contortions.

EDWARD POVEY : HUMAN

I make human ‘art’. This makes sense to me because I am a human making pictures for humans.

We still kiss for the same reasons and feel fear when we hear noises in the grave of the night. Once these paintings leave my painting studio and enter the world, they are thought of as ‘art’. Perhaps they are art, but that is not my base intention. I really desire to make an object that is true to my experience of life.

EDWARD POVEY : HUMAN

October 5th to November 3rd
at 15 East 76th Street, New York, NY

Edward Povey joined Ray Waterhouse's roster in 2021 and quickly became one of his premiere artists.

Edward Povey has worked tirelessly in his studio in Devon, England, for 20 months to complete 12 canvases for the show. "The artist displays extraordinary skill to create complex figurative paintings, heavy with symbolism and human experience", Waterhouse says, and adds that "Povey characterises his style as Emotional Realism, an apt description given the highly detailed depiction of the figures and the intense emotion they convey".

Opening to Public on October 5th 5:30-8:00pm
at 15 East 76th Street, New York, NY

Romance, religion, families, paintings and films are all ceremonies of meaning. We are so very vulnerable, and to have seen the same chair since our childhood, the same parent, the same sky above us remaining and remaining. It is this that calms the chaos. - The Artist.

We’re pleased to announce Edward Povey’s inaugural solo exhibition with our New York gallery.

EDWARD POVEY : HUMAN

October 5 - November 3 2023 at 15 East 76th Street, New York, NY between Fifth & Madison Avenues.

“Beyond the extraordinary skill necessary to create these immaculate canvases, what truly distinguishes Povey’s paintings from those of his contemporaries is his ‘emotional realism’, a term he coined and an excellent description of his art. His figures are lifelike and convincing, his compositions complex with a modern style, but most importantly he paints with true emotional intensity.” - Ray Waterhouse.

A 32-page catalogue will accompany the show.

We are delighted to present ‘Esquisse pour le ‘Grand Cirque’’ at our New York gallery. It’s an excellent mid-career example, a visual return by Chagall to his childhood home of Vitebsk. The circus often travelled to the town, and the sense of wonder it created provided great inspiration for the young artist. Chagall would continue to be inspired by this event throughout his career, depicting clowns, acrobats, equestriennes and musicians.

This work in oil and pastel is a full and complete study for one of Chagall's most important compositions, Le grand cirque, also executed in 1956, and which was sold for over $16 million in 2017, the second highest auction price for the artist.

Fernand Léger (French 1881 - 1955)
‘Deux Personnages’ 1939 (signed and dated 1947 for the year it was gifted or sold)
Gouache and pencil on paper.
12 1/2 x 16 1/4 inches

Of the many beloved themes Léger would use to depict modern urban life, workers and machines was a lifelong preoccupation, especially after serving in WW1 when he engaged with stunning wartime technologies he would sketch on the front. He left Europe for NYC in the 1940’s finding inspiration through spectacles of commerce and transformative neon city lights. He’s known as a predecessor to the Pop Art Movement because of his innovative approach to cubism and critical commentary on contemporaneous life, work and leisure.

This illustrated gouache was created in 1939, the same year he arrived in the U.S. Significant to the development of his iconic style, black outlines are used to create ambiguous compositions, conflating the subjects with their surrounding objects and machines. The citric yellow is especially pungent in presenting a sophisticated optical play Thomas Messer would comment on for Léger’s 1962 Guggenheim show ‘Five Themes and Variations’ where the viewer might ask “whether we are looking at a surface which Léger means to preserve or whether we allow ourselves to advance into this animated space that Léger conjures up before our eyes”.

‘Deux Personnages’ is now viewable at our New York gallery.
