We are delighted to have been asked to represent the Estate of the British abstract painter, Trevor Bell (1930-2017).
We were immensely proud of all the exhibitions we held of Trevor’s work when he was alive, in our galleries in Cork Street and Albemarle Street in London, and in Greene Street and Madison Avenue in New York. We now have exclusive access to the wonderful selection of Trevor’s works that remain in his studio in Cornwall.
22 paintings that we initially selected to show have just gone on view in Savile Row at prices from £2,500 to £10,000.

The Four Seasons
Duncan McCormick at Art SG, Singapore 2024
18 - 21 January

We are proud to present on our booth FC32 a solo show of paintings by the British artist Duncan McCormick. The curated show traces the changing of the seasons, in colour and subject but above all in its changing moods - from lyrical and elegiac, through quietly humorous and optimistic to raucous and celebratory.

EDWARD POVEY : HUMAN

I am the only child of a merchant seaman and a practical shopgirl, born in London shortly after the Second World War. I grew up looking across stiffly ironed tablecloths at cups of tea, the three of us sitting around in gaslight in my great aunt’s house. So, this is how I see things. When I think of us forked people, I always see us around tables, with crockery and food balancing precariously, much like my childhood. I find it both sweet and sad, and also true

EDWARD POVEY : HUMAN

Povey's DÉCOUSU is French for ‘disjointed’. During 2022 Edward Povey searched for ways to simplify his work, placing more responsibility on the figure to carry the exploration that occurs in the painting, rather than relying upon objects and settings to transmit his mixed emotions. DÉCOUSUE typifies this shift of emphasis, looking in one direction towards a more elegant future whilst also looking backwards to an earlier work called PERSONAL ENTANGLEMENT painted in 2007, depicting a figure in an impossible pose, signifying internal contortions.

EDWARD POVEY : HUMAN

I make human ‘art’. This makes sense to me because I am a human making pictures for humans.

We still kiss for the same reasons and feel fear when we hear noises in the grave of the night. Once these paintings leave my painting studio and enter the world, they are thought of as ‘art’. Perhaps they are art, but that is not my base intention. I really desire to make an object that is true to my experience of life.

October 5th to November 3rd
at 15 East 76th Street, New York, NY

Edward Povey joined Ray Waterhouse's roster in 2021 and quickly became one of his premiere artists.

Edward Povey has worked tirelessly in his studio in Devon, England, for 20 months to complete 12 canvases for the show. "The artist displays extraordinary skill to create complex figurative paintings, heavy with symbolism and human experience", Waterhouse says, and adds that "Povey characterises his style as Emotional Realism, an apt description given the highly detailed depiction of the figures and the intense emotion they convey".

Romance, religion, families, paintings and films are all ceremonies of meaning. We are so very vulnerable, and to have seen the same chair since our childhood, the same parent, the same sky above us remaining and remaining. It is this that calms the chaos. - The Artist.

We’re pleased to announce Edward Povey’s inaugural solo exhibition with our New York gallery.

EDWARD POVEY : HUMAN

October 5 - November 3 2023 at 15 East 76th Street, New York, NY between Fifth & Madison Avenues.

“Beyond the extraordinary skill necessary to create these immaculate canvases, what truly distinguishes Povey’s paintings from those of his contemporaries is his ‘emotional realism’, a term he coined and an excellent description of his art. His figures are lifelike and convincing, his compositions complex with a modern style, but most importantly he paints with true emotional intensity.” - Ray Waterhouse.

A 32-page catalogue will accompany the show.

We are delighted to present ‘Esquisse pour le ‘Grand Cirque’’ at our New York gallery. It’s an excellent mid-career example, a visual return by Chagall to his childhood home of Vitebsk. The circus often travelled to the town, and the sense of wonder it created provided great inspiration for the young artist. Chagall would continue to be inspired by this event throughout his career, depicting clowns, acrobats, equestriennes and musicians.

This work in oil and pastel is a full and complete study for one of Chagall's most important compositions, Le grand cirque, also executed in 1956, and which was sold for over $16 million in 2017, the second highest auction price for the artist.

‘Deux Personnages’ 1939 (signed and dated 1947 for the year it was gifted or sold)
Gouache and pencil on paper.
12 1/2 x 16 1/4 inches

Of the many beloved themes Léger would use to depict modern urban life, workers and machines was a lifelong preoccupation, especially after serving in WW1 when he engaged with stunning wartime technologies he would sketch on the front. He left Europe for NYC in the 1940’s finding inspiration through spectacles of commerce and transformative neon city lights. He’s known as a predecessor to the Pop Art Movement because of his innovative approach to cubism and critical commentary on contemporaneous life, work and leisure.

This illustrated gouache was created in 1939, the same year he arrived in the U.S. Significant to the development of his iconic style, black outlines are used to create ambiguous compositions, conflating the subjects with their surrounding objects and machines. The citric yellow is especially pungent in presenting a sophisticated optical play Thomas Messer would comment on for Léger’s 1962 Guggenheim show ‘Five Themes and Variations’ where the viewer might ask “whether we are looking at a surface which Léger means to preserve or whether we allow ourselves to advance into this animated space that Léger conjures up before our eyes”.

‘Deux Personnages’ is now viewable at our New York gallery.

Opening Reception May 25th from 6-8pm
15 E 76th Street, NY, NY, 10021

Waterhouse & Dodd is pleased to present After the Rain, emerging artist Alessandro Keegan's debut solo exhibition. Keegan is an exciting new addition to the gallery’s roster and the show’s 11 paintings highlight the artist's vibrant and exceptionally rendered paintings, rich with historical references and metaphysical intrigue.

Keegan credits his own visual experiences and nature as source imagery for his abstract paintings, and his work is influenced by the Expressionists and Surrealists. Keegan's interests also lie in mysticism and spirituality, beliefs that are seeing a resurgence in contemporary art, informed by recent attention to Hilma af Klint and members of the Transcendentalist Painting Group.

After the Rain opens at 6pm on Wednesday, May 25th at our New York location.

The artist's work will be featured in the upcoming Art Macau: Macao International Art Biennale 2023 this summer, curated by Qiu Zhijie.

“Just as mysticism fascinates me, so does the mystery of human psychology. This work, as well as other organic, plant-like, or fungi-forms that appear in my work, is partly influenced by the drawings made by Hélène Smith in the 19th century…These images have haunted me for years, and influence the forms found in “Nature Transformer,” “Eidolon Organ” and other works.” - Alessandro Keegan

"Edward Povey’s paintings are complicated deceits of human realism. He explores the human experience of mortality, sexuality, regret, and longing, although he is opposed to the idea of using obvious narratives in paintings, because he insists that paintings are visual rather than literary.

The title BLESSURE is Dutch for injury. The bruise on the arm of the figure is a small gesture towards the corporeal state of human beings, and the figure is characteristically vulnerable and aged by life. We are presented with a scene of precariousness: a house of cards standing in the presence of its enemy, the fan; a spilled cup and saucer of tea, teeters on the edge of a table. Every texture is worked to convey its history and the nature of its fabric, even though Povey does not regard himself as a traditional Realist. As with all Povey works of this period, the painting is founded in a Verdaccio palette borrowed from Raphael’s altarpiece flesh (1483-1520), onto which he constructs a chord of color: the lucid melody of the lemons floating across the supporting shirt and tea color, and all founded in the rhythm of the undulating grey and plain chocolate base. It is a very considered apparatus, but it touches the chaos of human internal life." - Edward Povey

Povey lives and works in Devon, England, and still devotes up to a hundred hours a week to his work.

W&D New York presents our first solo show with Alessandro Keegan titled ‘After the Rain’ from May 25 - June 26.

Please join us for an opening reception May 24th 6-8pm.

A visual artist living and working in upstate NY, Alessandro considers his work ‘abstract’ in the same way that works by Roberto Matta, Wilfredo Lam and Kay Sage are abstract. He writes “I’m coming from a Post-Modern perspective where I move between abstraction and representation.” Sharing an affinity with transcendentalist painters like Hilma af Klint and Agnes Pelton, Alessandro’s pictures are imbued with mysticism.

The painting displayed is titled “After the Rain”, the namesake of the show and borrowed from one of his favorite 1942 surrealist paintings by Max Ernst, “Europe After the Rain II”. This painting along with ten others fresh from the studio will be on display at 15 East 76th street.

“Seven Paintings by Edward Povey” a new catalogue linked in bio.

Décousu is French for ‘disjointed’. During 2022 searched for ways to simplify his work, placing more responsibility on the figure to carry the exploration that occurs in the painting, rather than relying upon objects and settings to transmit his varied emotions.

Décousu typifies this shift in emphasis, looking in one direction towards a more elegant future whilst also looking backwards to an earlier work titled “Personal Entaglement” painted in 2007 and depicting a figure in an impossible pose, signifying internal contortions.

Around the upper chest and forehead of the figure, the skin is flushed with blood, implying an emotional arousal; the blouse painted in arterial red to emphasize this state. Povey is using his distinctive manner of realism to produce the illusion that this position is humanly possible, a visual metaphor for how we attempt to conceal our own internal conflicts.

Highlights from our new Edward Povey Catalog

https://website-waterhousedodd.artlogic.net/viewing-room/33/

Explore the interior world of Edward Povey in seven recent paintings and an insightful essay by Professor Roman Konik, Head of the Department of Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art at the University of Wroclaw in Poland. Povey's life has been accented by moments of trauma that emerge through captivating, emotional narratives that compress figures in spaces rich with symbolic artifacts.

Edward Povey is a highly creative and well established artist. He lives and works in Devon, England and has exhibited internationally for many years. His works are in important private and public collections, and in 2018 The British Library documented his career for the British nation.

The University of Wales commissioned him to create a major 20 x 40 foot painting for a Concert Hall in 1991; he painted a densely narrative work comprising seven panels framed by trompe-l'œil stonework. Since then, Povey’s work has been acquired by prominent institutions including The National Museum of Wales; the National Library of Wales; the Glynn Vivien Art Museum, Wales; the Anglesey Museum Art Collection; the British High Commission, Singapore; Goldman Sachs, London; JP Morgan, New York, amongst others.

The Tour Saint-Jacques (1509- 1523), a monument in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, was dedicated to Saint James the Greater, marking the road which led to the city of Tour and subsequently to the Way of St James, the route to Santiago de Compostela - a Christian pilgrimage destination. The Tour has been under scaffold for many years and has an abandoned look about it, adding to the sense of dislocation and discovery for the solo figure perched staring out over the urban landscape.

Reflecting on the April sky here in NY and the influx of warm weather, April Sky 1963 is currently on view at 76th street. This is a large painting that captures the vigor and extension of body needed to create it. It’s easy to get lost in the cumulonimbus clouds forming a structured composition through a collision of temperatures.
Jon Schueler was an American abstract expressionist best known for his large scale compositions of pastoral scenes. Much of his compositional inspiration comes from the dramatic skies off of the coast of Scotland where he spent a great deal of time working. In 1951 Schueler moved to New York with his friend and fellow artist, Clyfford Still. He was influential in the New York school and was a professor at the Yale MFA program. His works are in many major collections including, the Scottish National Gallery of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, Baltimore Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Berkeley Art Museum, Crocker Art Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, Harwood Museum of Art.

During World War Two, Picasso remained in Paris during the N**i occupation. He was unable to exhibit his work during the war because the N**is considered his art to be “degenerate” as was the case with so many other prolific artists of the period. He continued to paint and began writing poetry in his studio during the war period and used contraband bronze smuggled into the city by the French Resistance for his sculptures. In 1946, two years before producing this drawing, he moved to the South of France where he would live and work for the remainder of his life.

Fleurs, a line drawing on paper made in 1948 is typical of Picasso’s style, considering this piece was made the same year as “The Kitchen” it is a testament to his avid drawing practice and variety of oeuvre.  Fleurs is currently on view at our 76th Street location.

"I anticipated how exciting it would be for me to get a drawing back in steel. I could hold it in my hands. I could pick it up by the lines, off the paper. It was so exciting. It was like suddenly I was a whole new artist.”

In 1984 incorporated laser cut steel into his practice.  He chose drawings carefully, selecting those that portrayed an immediacy in stroke.  To him, the steel cuts were “an example of life not necessarily being as simple as one might wish." He added: “I trust that in the long run wisdom will prevail and what it is will not matter. What matters, of course, is it is beautiful, a vivid expression of a valid idea, presented in a specific form that really has never been seen before.”

Monica with Necklace, Hands Folded, is uniquely stained in black to allow for slight tonal variations. It is on view at our 76th street gallery.

A leading second-generation exponent of Abstract Expressionism, Sam Francis created some of the most innovative explorations of color and light in twentieth-century art.  In 1956 Time magazine described him as “the hottest American painter in Paris these days” and that same year he was included in the seminal 12 Americans exhibition curated by Dorothy C. Miller at MoMA, New York.  His work can be found in numerous public collections worldwide, including MoMA (New York), Tate Gallery (London), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Guggenheim Museum (New York), and the Centre Pompidou (Paris).

Currently at our 76th street gallery, this is a vibrant example from the beginning of a richly innovative decade for Francis.  After returning from Japan, he would incorporate ideas of ‘Ma’ which focused on the importance of the use of negative space as well as bridging from Jungian philosophy.

Evening Shadows is currently on view at our 76th street location. abstract paintings are strongly linked to the English landscape tradition. His paintings and drawings explore the coastal light of southern Dorset where he has lived and worked since leaving London in the early 1990s. In his recent work, Brewster often uses a more vibrant palette and irregular shapes reminiscent of landscape forms yet distinctly abstract. His earlier works were characterized by very thickly applied oil paint. The later works often employ thinner glazes of acrylic paint and collage elements.
