First Aircraft to Break the Sound Barrier - Cockpit of the Bell X-1 "Glamorous Glennis"

The X-1 aircraft #46-062, nicknamed "Glamorous Glennis" and piloted by Chuck Yeager. The aircraft was drop launched from the bomb bay of a B-29 and reached Mach 1.06 (700 mph) (1,100 km/h; 610 kn) The X-1 was the first manned aircraft to exceed the speed of sound on October 14, 1947.

The Bell X-1 built by Bell Aircraft Corporation, is a rocket engine–powered aircraft. The aircraft was a joint National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics with U.S. Army Air Forces and U.S. Air Force supersonic research project. Conceived during 1944, the plane was designed and built in 1945.

During later testing, the X-1 achieved a speed of nearly 1,000 miles per hour (1,600 km/h; 870 kn) in 1948. (Photo Courtesy of Smithsonian)

Millions of years in the making, Balanced Rock became a paid tourist attraction in the 1890. The family who bought the land, put up a fence and began charging 25 cents to see the iconic rock formation.

Giant Ice Fountain in Detroit, Michigan, 1910.

Several jets of water are allowed to flow all winter, and the result is a massive chunk of ice which sometimes reaches a height of thirty feet and weights many tons. This was tradition in Detroit of forming ice sculptures that dates back to 1900.

Alexander Graham Bell Hydrofoil Breaks World Speed Record, September 9, 1919, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Alexander Graham BELL, famous for inventing the telephone, developed the first successful hydrofoil, which he called "Hydrodome" or HD-4 for the technical name. He conceived of the "heavier than water craft" so Alexander along with his wife, Mabel Bell, and colleague Frederick W. Baldwin, began developing it in 1908.

The Hydrofoil was designed and built at the Bell Boatyard on Bell's Beinn Bhreagh estate near Baddeck, Nova Scotia, Canada. The hydrofoil set a world marine speed record of 70.86 miles per hour (114.04 km/h) on September 9, 1919.

The General Motors "Firebird II" Gas-Turbine Powered Concept Car 1956.

The four-passenger Firebird II was characterized by innovations like a titanium body, a regenerative gas turbine with output of 200 hp (150 kW) all-wheel independent suspension with automatic load-leveling, power disc brakes, alternator, magnetic ignition key, electric gear selection, and individually-controlled air conditioning.

Motorcycle Chariot Racing 1936 - New South Wales Police officers jury-rigged Harley-Davidson motorcycles to flimsy chariots and piloted the Harley's with leather strapped connected to both throttles and handle.

Really talented riders would use different throttle speeds to help steer – faster on the outside, slower on the inside to gain maximum traction. Event was held at Sydney Showground during NSW Police Carnival. Sydney, Australia 1936. (Photograph Courtesy of NSWPF)
