Sugarlift is pleased to present Kenny Nguyen, Chạm: Mapping Identity, on view through January 31, 2024. The exhibition is on view at High Line Nine at 507 West 27th Street, New York, NY.

Vietnamese-American artist Kenny Nguyen embarks on a personal journey through his new exhibition Chạm: Mapping Identity. In his hybrid forms of painting, sculpture, and installation, Nguyen utilizes silk as a metaphor for the transient nature of culture and selfhood. As strong and resilient as it is graceful and elegant, silk represents the fluidity and complexity of the quest for self-understanding.

Nguyen recently returned to Vietnam for the first time since emigrating to the United States over a decade ago. Upon his arrival in his former home, he became acutely aware of the changes that had unfolded in his absence. The rapid pace of globalization, development, and corresponding cultural shifts had left an indelible mark on the societal fabric of his homeland. Revisiting this transformed landscape had a concomitant and unexpected impact on his sense of identity. Nguyen’s new body of work on view at Sugarlift seeks to capture the nuanced challenges he encountered while reclaiming his transformed cultural roots.

Nguyen’s large-scale installation Homeland on the eastern wall of the gallery space was created in anticipation of the artist’s return to Vietnam. Visceral allusions to memories surface from Nguyen’s childhood in Vietnam within the enveloping piece. On the gallery’s western wall, directly opposite from Homeland, hangs Nguyen’s Encounter Series – work the artist created in response and reaction to his recent trip. Mirroring the old and new, memory and reality, past and present – these pieces encourage layered contemplation about identity and its role as we grow, move, and evolve.

Dynamic works by Florida-based artist Taylor O. Thomas.

For Thomas, a painting begins with a gesture she has borrowed from a dilapidated wall, cracking tile, scurrying commuter, or draping telephone wire. It continues based on the objects that jolt her attention within her studio walls. She mines for forms that approach “rightness” and "wrongness" simultaneously, gathering references to expand upon and manipulate. Gestural painting is her way of creating a tactile language, as she questions what it means to live fully in the body.

Minimalist works by artist Alexander Jowett.

Jowett incorporates a variety of traditional and non-traditional mediums in his art practice, often using a variety of materials (linen, wool, denim, rope, found material etc.) to express aspects of how we see and feel art. Working in series that draws upon a use of repetitive processes, Jowett’s works follow a Kantian philosophy by which we see not based simply upon what is in front of us but by past experiences. Jowett’s use of material is a catalyst for the viewer to bring their own past experiences into the works in front of them. Whilst the repetitive process is minimal in means, the works themselves are more akin to aesthetic philosophical dissertations than truly minimalist artworks.

Vibrant works by the incredible Toronto-based Yangyang Pan.

Pan's work is a reflection of her personal artistic journey and cultural experience between Western and Eastern cultures. The artist's palette is chromatically saturated in a higher key, which delights the senses and adds drama to the composition. Her gestural abstract paintings forge a vocabulary completely her own – a unique blend of idea, desire, and talent, emblematic of the global nature of art of our time.

Paintings by Buenos Aires-based painter Patrick Semple.

Patrick Semple is an American abstract painter who works in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Colorado. Painting since childhood, Semple is influenced by the beauty found in world travel and the life-death-life cycle that encompasses our everyday surroundings. Relationships between old and new; decay and regeneration of city infrastructure, of human relationships, and the regenerative life force of nature are all fuel for his painting practice.

Check out these bold and dynamic paintings by New York-based artist .

Sultan's work is a high dive into color and activity, bouncing between abstraction and landscape, composition and improvisation, bad taste and good. Recalling Post Impressionism, children's drawings, and the organic geometries of Ellsworth Kelly and Mary Heilmann, they are self-conscious, joyful and immersive.

Sculptural work by Rotterdam-based artist duo Masja van Deursen and Serge Game.

Marie Bernard is a collaboration between graphic designer Masja van Deursen and painter and sculptor Serge Game. Based on their individual expertise, they investigate their shared passion for the tactile use of color and materials. Their approach is very intuitive and allows for both abstract and more figurative results in the form of high-relief wall installations, collages, and sculptures.

New work by abstract painter John Vitale, now available through Sugarlift!

New York-based abstract painter John Vitale is a self-taught, multidisciplinary artist. His work addresses the routine and repetitiveness of life. Work by London-based artist , available through Sugarlift!

Kostas Papakostas is a multi-media artist, working predominantly in painting and video. His process is visceral - he moves continuously around the painting creating layers with intuitive gestures until the painting breaks free from his control and starts to develop its own destiny. He never goes back to make changes. Each piece is a memory of an intuitive choreography that extends beyond himself.

TONIGHT: Virtual Panel Discussion on Painting & Meaning

This evening, Colorado-based artist Jordan Wolfson will be facilitating a virtual panel discussion on Painting & Meaning, hosted by the New York Studio School and yours truly! In this event, multidisciplinary artists Eric Elliott, Zoey Frank, John Lees, Ying Li, Ruth Miller Forge, Jordan Wolfson, and Clintel Steed will share how materiality and subject matter inform intention in their expansive portfolios.

Where does the meaning of a painting reside? We often think of meaning in connection to a painting’s subject matter. During the great adventure of Modernity, meaning was also deliberately cultivated and found in the way a painting was made. For painters, meaning is located both in what is painted, and in how it is painted. Often assumed to be primarily conceptual, meaning in painting is perhaps most essentially a felt experience. This panel discussion invites six representational painters, working in a wide range of attitudes, to have a conversation together about meaning in their own work, and in painting at large.

To register for this event, follow the link in our bio, or reach out to [email protected] for more details!

Today is the final day to see Joy Kinna: My Morning, Your Night

On view at Sugarlift, today 12-6. 508 W 28th Street, NYC.

On the surface of Kinna’s raw canvases, rich charcoal hues bloom like ink dropped in water. Each shape contains a tension - pools of diluted paint pushing into a surrounding negative space. For this series, Kinna was particularly influenced by the Nordic mountains she visited this year, whose sharp rugged peaks pierce an ethereal northern sky. Themes of day and night, motion and stillness are a through-line, speaking to the duality in nature and human existence across continents. In this collection, Kinna creates tranquility in limpid pools of paint. Like parallel lines that never meet, dark and lightness, within and around us, find balance and harmony.

Alicia Gimeno, a Barcelona-based artist, has always wanted to understand the forms of the world. Born into a family of engineers where a technical understanding of space was the norm, Gimeno retained a taste for abstraction and added a dose of playfulness and creative freedom. Her works - both visual and sculptural - explore the expressive possibilities of form and line in relation to their context.

Our Story

Sugarlift started as an art gallery in Bushwick, Brooklyn. We wanted to highlight all of the artistic talent of our neighborhood. Over the next year and a half, Sugarlift hosted many exhibitions and events to showcase the art movements going on locally.

In 2016, Sugarlift moved out of its physical gallery to focus on developing its online platform and advisory service to showcase artists to a wider audience. Through our advisory service, Sugarlift has already connected artists with hundreds of new collectors all around the world.

Our journey is just beginning and we need your help. It is our mission to create a sustainable relationship between artists and collectors. What does that mean? It means that when people collect the art of young artists, it allows them to afford studio time and to continue evolving their portfolio. Many years from now, these are the artists who will define the visual identity of our generation. And they will inspire the generation after them, just as we are inspired by the great artists who came before us.

Please join us in this noble mission!
