Please join us for the last day of our installation REAL, REALLY REAL, SUPER REAL. at the Navy Pier Booth #355 from 11:00am – 6:00pm

“From the earliest cave paintings by pre-historic man the conversation about realism has been ongoing. More than 50 years ago (In 1972) Documenta devoted its entire exhibition to “Realism,” showing “Photorealism,” as a “movement” for the first time, as well as including representational works by incarcerated artists.

Several of NHG’s artists engage the dialogue of representation in the broadest range and definition of the term, “real.” There are many ways to define “real” and to explore it visually.”

Jody Guralnick’s new exhibition, TELL ME A SECRET, opens February 1st from 6 to 8pm and continues through March 16th. The paintings included in the exhibition depict the winding patterns that lichen forms on rocks, as well as the branching hyphal patterns of fungal growth. The lichen, painted in acrylic in rich and alluring impasto, stands in bas-relief against an oil background evocative of nature’s palette.

Nancy Koenigsberg’s new exhibition, LINE AND SHADOW, opens February 1st from 6 to 8pm and continues through March 16th. The exhibition will include woks made between 1998 and 2023, focusing on wire sculpture. Her wall piece and installation works are woven, knotted, crocheted, or otherwise manipulated from various weights and colors of copper, steel, and aluminum wire. Woven or knotted grids are shaped and layered. Materials are shiny and dull, fragile and industrial strength. The various combinations and contrasts challenge and engage the viewer both visually and conceptually.

Last chance to view Jesse Small’s exhibition DISTANT SIGNALS, closing Saturday!
“The central factor of my screens is that they are cut and formed by hand. There was no sketch or plan laid down prior to the work. My lifelong passion for forming metal has brought me to a place of extreme intimacy with it. Though the cutting area reaches 3000 degrees Fahrenheit, my hands and eyes are inches away, sealed within layers of safety gear. Patterns and forms are created from the natural range of movement present in my hands, arms, and posture. The steel responds constantly. If I followed a plan, I would have to shut myself off from the fresh thoughts and inputs flowing. To me, that’s a disaster in any situation.” — Jesse Small

Last chance to view Timothy Cummings’s exhibition BLUE BOY, closing on Saturday!
Over the years, Cummings has created portraits, faces, sometimes perforated with spots and dots, at other times traversed by drawing lines and flourishes, turning a young boy’s head into a mask. It is always the eyes that communicate to and gaze at the viewer with undeniable intensity. It is the eyes that hold the secret.

COMING SOON! Opening on February 1st, Aspen based artist Jody Guralnick will have her first exhibition at NHG. The exhibition will include paintings made between 2022 and the present, ranging in size from 12 x12 inches up to 60 x 144 inches. The paintings depict the winding patterns that lichen forms on rocks, as well as the branching hyphal patterns of fungal growth. The lichen, painted in acrylic in rich and alluring impasto, stands in bas-relief against an oil background evocative of nature’s palette. Guralnick says,” As muses go, yeast, mold, mushrooms and lichen have a lot to offer. When fungus grows, it casts these lacy mycelial threads. It’s so baroque and over the top.”

Jesse Small’s current exhibition DISTANT SIGNALS continues through January 27th. The artist says of his new series, “The layered patterns come from drawings I have been working on for the past 15 years, right up until today. Compiled from hundreds of drawings observing nature: the accidental shadow of a branch, the natural structures on Spanish moss, kelp, erosion. The pieces are an open experiment into how information and story precipitates out of patterns and colors. These pieces are an exploration of the sculptural relief format, the efficient use of space inherent in a combination of materials and illusion. Being truly abstract, the story is open-ended so there is room for the viewer’s imagination to step in.”

Timothy Cummings’s current exhibition BLUE BOY continues through January 27th. Much of Cummings’s work addresses the issue of youthful turmoil, of that awkward moment between childhood and adulthood, of identity, or gender. The artist often paints figures as a child might conjure them in his/her mind, giving a dreamlike, fantasy quality to a grown-up persona.

Jesse Small’s exhibition DISTANT SIGNALS continues through January 27th. Come visit us to view the artist’s steel sculptures in real life.
Jesse Small’s newest series of work features layers of pierced metal screens which create a three-dimensional relief on the wall. These layers are spaced to allow light to diffuse through the sculpture and generate shadows below. These tondos offer the viewer a simultaneous bolt of energy as both sculpture and painting.
