Last Friday, on a warm summer night in Chinatown, we screened “A Week in May” at Hello Human House, in the space Lyle Gallery used to call home.

We shared popcorn, classic movie theater candy, and Diet Cokes (the essentials) with the sweetest group of people. Some friends, some design community, some who were featured in the film. Our cup is still so full.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support this project. Thank you to Jenny, Aurora, and the Hello Human team for making this possible.

“A Week in May” follows New York’s design community through its biggest week of the year. It’s on YouTube, 25 minutes. It was made to reach people outside the design industry, so if you enjoy it, please share it. The further it travels the better.

Two years ago, Lyle opened its first exhibition during New York City’s Design Week. This year, instead of curating a show, we made a short documentary about the week - highlighting the community, the talent, the silliness, the passion, the care, and most importantly the people behind a week like this.

I came across the work of Carrie Stevens this weekend at , the oldest family owned fly shop in the world, up in the western Catskills.

I did not know fishing could be this beautiful. She was a milliner from Maine who tied these by hand a hundred years ago, and I have not stopped thinking about them since.

If you visited Lyle Gallery’s first space in Chinatown, I’m sure I showed you Secret Room™, the back room hidden by a built-in bookshelf. We had grand plans of throwing big le***an poker nights in there, in the aesthetic of In the Mood for Love, with monogrammed visors and a swanky jazz playlist. We never got to live out that dream before we left Rutgers Street and went nomadic. But, and hear me out, what about Lyle, in the Garden, with a Royal Flush? 😏

A lawyer at the ACLU. A professor of Soviet history who also acts. A painter who works in biotech. A sommelier on a mission to get more q***r people into wine. A gallerist in from São Paulo. A furniture designer in from Marfa. A real estate broker who sells with art and culture. A wealth manager for q***r clients. A doctor who treats performers. A writer who left Google and launched her book at Stonewall. A couple who just got engaged.
Someone told me it was the first party all week where she’d met people who weren’t in design…

A sapphic night during Design Week, at a gallery in Chelsea

There is a steel building on the corner of 23rd and 10th. It’s in the heart of the Chelsea gallery district. The High Line overlooks the second floor, and the second floor overlooks an outdoor sculpture garden. My friend Isabel recently took over that second floor for her art gallery. This year, Design Week overlapped with Art Week. What would it look like if we created a space for our community, q***r, le***an, nonbinary, trans, to find each other under the umbrella of the arts? A place to connect the people who work within art and culture to the people who love them.

…and then there were the people.

If Lyle had a yearbook page, this would be it. So many of the faces here are people I met JUST THIS YEAR, which feels actually unbelievable, and so many more not even pictured. Kind, smart, funny, generous humans who make me feel so grateful to do what I do.

Thank you for making Lyle what it is and what it’s becoming. See you on the flip side 🫶
