Our third salon tackled the topic of ‘Truth’, an urgent concern in our current global political climate. Tina Rivers Ryan curated a selection of works for our members and sparked serious discussion in the SoHo loft on September 14th, 2018. Our members voted on two artists to add to the collection, and a few members put in extra to get our third choice into the collection, just out of range for our acquisition budget. Artists added to the collection (pictured in order) Eva and Franco Mattes, Clement Valla, and Michael Mandiberg. Members who supported these acquisitions were Ben Fino-Radin, Kelani Nichole, Scott Button, Jon Huddleson, Brett Wallace, Cleveland Adams, John Hilmes, Mark Kizelsteyn, James Caulfield, Holly Hagar, Alice Lloyd George, Alex Heffsee, Neil Redding, Kristi Gushiken, Fanny Lakoubay, James George, Ellen Sandor, Norman Ballard, Scott Norton, Myriam Vanneschi, Christiane Paul, Angela Redai, Mark Blackwell, Jessica Forsythe, Matt Salzberg, Alex Chung, Mark Mollé, Anton Syvatsky, Howard Cohen, Nicolas Wittenborn, Manan Ter-Grigoryan, Kurt von Trapp, with an additional gift from the founder William Nathan. On January 10th, 2019 our full collection will be on display for the first time during an immersive dinner salon, hosted at @betaworks studios in NYC. 🎟 A few tickets still available, join us to kickoff another year of collection. Our collection was founded on February 20th, 2018 with guidance from Nora Khan, who curated a selection of works on the theme of ‘Identity’. A small group of members gathered in our founder William Nathan’s soho loft to hear from the curator and discuss the topic with two brilliant minds Yasaman Sheri and Pastiche Lumumba.

Together, we selected six works for the available acquisition budget of $35K, using a simple web app our founder built to invite more people into the world of collecting. These artists joined our collection: (pictured in order) Tabita Rezaire, Meriem Bennani, Jakob Kudusk Steensen, LaTurbo Avedon, Ryan Kuo, and Snow Yunxue Fu.

The members who supported acquisition of these works were (in order of joining) Ben Fino-Radin, Kelani Nichole, Scott Button, Jon Huddleson, NS Rockwell, Brett Wallace, Cleveland Adams, John Hilmes, Mark Kizelsteyn, James Caulfield, Willa Köener, Caitlin Burke, Mitu Khandaker, Holly Hagar, and Alice Lloyd George.

On January 10th, 2019 our full collection will be on display for the first time during an immersive dinner salon, hosted at @betaworks studios in NYC. Tickets still available, join us to kickoff another year of collection 🎟: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-current-museum-at-betaworks-studios-tickets-52822323993

Our first salon gathering was one week ago, it was a very special evening. Many thanks to Walter Wlodarczyk for capturing the art works and people who made it a night to remember.

On Tuesday, February 20th artworks selected by Nora Khan were presented salon-style for members of The Current in our SoHo location. A discussion was livestreamed at 8PM featuring Yasaman Sheri and Pastiche Lumumba

Featured artists included Snow Yunxue Fu, Jakob Kudusk Steensen, Jacolby Satterwhite, LaTurbo Avedon, Hyphen-labs, Ryan Kuo, Tabita Rezaire, Ann Hirsch and Meriem Bennani.

“This salon will explore how contemporary artists subvert, disassemble, and undo the standard language we have to talk about identity. In doing so, they offer new and surprising paradigms for framing and exploring very old questions. We take up “identity” as a point of access, identity as mode for collective meaning-making, and identity as the exquisite and universal search to mediate who we would like to be through how we wish to be seen.” Read the full salon statement from Nora Khan

"LaTurbo Avedon is an artist and avatar whose work gives new meaning to the term “born-digital” – as Avedon is a gender-neutral figure that originated in, and works within, virtual spaces. In those spaces, found in video works and animations, they question the role of digital authorship and the boundary between physical and virtual worlds."
