Helen Draves, “Threads of Being”
The theme of my work is “Threads of Being.” This phrase resonates deeply with me, carrying profound symbolism and metaphorical weight. When translated into Korean as “褒顫楚,” it captures the complexity of life and the essence of human existence, tangled yet profoundly interconnected.
Since my youth, I have grappled with the question of my own being. Over time, the visible changes in my outer self have deepened this inner turmoil, and these reflections have naturally become the foundation of my artistic expression.
From the beginning of my artistic journey, I have been drawn to clay as a medium. Working with clay brought me immense joy and a sense of pure immersion. However, my fascination with installation art led me to explore beyond clay, experimenting with materials like metal, acrylic, light, and video. These diverse mediums have opened new doors, enabling me to express my inner narratives more richly and dynamically.
In my own work, I strive to weave such invisible threads. With every piece I create, I pour all my passion and spirit into it, hoping that these threads will continue to connect and resonate with others, even long after I am gone. It is this belief that drives me to keep creating, moment by moment, stitch by stitch, crafting my own eternal threads.

Youngkwan Choi, "Guardians of the Forest"
My work goes beyond simply cutting, welding, and assembling metal. It begins with reviving the history embedded in the steel itself. Understanding where the metal came from, its original purpose, how long it existed in specific places, and the relationships it forged with people—these narratives serve as the foundation of my artistic exploration.
In my latest series, created in New York, I focus on firearms crafted from steel. This series examines the dual role of guns as weapons and the complex social implications they hold within American society. I approach this subject with a perspective that is both personal and artistic, incorporating a subtle sense of irony to navigate the discourse.
Steel transforms into weapons, these weapons shape cities, and, ultimately, they contribute to the formation of nations. Through this trajectory, my work raises the fundamental question: What is truly essential for human life? From a subjective point of view, I seek to address themes of war, murder, violence, and the symbolism of power, using the gun as a lens through which to explore these issues.
At the heart of this series lies an exploration of the paradoxical nature of firearms—their capacity for both destruction and protection. This duality encapsulates the central purpose of the exhibition. Through my work, I aim to present an allegorical reflection on the intricate narratives of human history, where creation and destruction, self-preservation, and devastation are inexorably intertwined.

This exhibition is divided into three parts, each reflecting a flow of time and inner transformation centered on the theme of “home.” Each part symbolizes specific emotions and memories related to my life, allowing me to portray the portrait of “home.” This portrait isn’t confined to a single form; it varies depending on composition and interpretation, with photography as a method and painting as an expressive medium.

Rubik 50 – Fifty Years of Magic Exhibition
Enjoy our recap video of last night opening reception of "Rubik 50 – Fifty Years of Magic Exhibition". On View from November 18-20, 2024.
Also join us today, November 19, 2024 at 6PM for a GUIDED TOUR with Balázs Püspök, creator of the exhibition, Head of Academy at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design.
Organized by the Liszt Institute New York and the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design a special exhibition titled RUBIK50 - Fifty Years of Magic will take place at One Art Space between November 18-20 celebrating the 50th anniversary of the invention of the Rubik's Cube as well as its inventor's, Ernő Rubik's 80th birthday.
The aim of this pop-up exhibition, consisting of three major sections, is to showcase the broad spectrum of Ernő Rubik’s work. It offers insights into pivotal moments in the designer's life while outlining the history of the Cube and its intriguing cultural impacts. Engaging with the power of play in an interactive format, it illustrates the innovative inventions emerging today in the 21st century, right where the Rubik’s Cube first achieved its remarkable success. In a predominantly digital world, this exhibition pays tribute to the Rubik’s Cube, a game that embodies timeless value. Unlike the rapid obsolescence seen in many computer games, the Rubik’s Cube speaks to eternity, illustrating how true complexity often resides in the simplest of objects, much like many ancient games.
The installation units, constructed from cubes and using their colour palette, provide lesser-known yet relevant and interesting information about Ernő Rubik, while also highlighting scientific and pop-cultural references to the Cube.

Jorge Torrealba is a Venezuelan caricature artist based in New York. Jorge was born and raised in Punto Fijo, Venezuela. Jorge is well known worldwide, he is an Emmy Winner and has received numerous recognitions for his art and designs. Jorge was inspired by his own immigration process to create this Exhibition “Alien Number.” As most immigrants, Jorge knows the importance of this number for his immigration process in the United States. Jorge is not an illegal immigrant, he is an immigrant in an immigration process.
An Alien Registration Number is a 7-9 digit number that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) gives to most immigrants who apply to live in the United States. It’s also called an A-Number, Alien Number, or USCIS Number. USCIS uses the A-number to track people’s immigration files, which are sometimes called alien files or a-files. The Alien Number is very important for Jorge and all immigrants in the United States.

Featured Artist: Komelia Okim (Hongja Kim), Jean Jinho Kim, Tae dong Kim – James & Hongmi Kim Hoog
Professor Kim Hong-ja is a pioneer among female artists who studied abroad in the 1960s. Her work reflects her experiences and presence in marriage, family responsibilities, economic stability, and social roles. Her modern yet warm humanistic works, especially teapots and metal sculptures, have been widely recognized.
Jean Kim (Cha Jin-ho) is a sculptor whose works, featured prominently in the Washington Post, create a unique and uplifting atmosphere in both outdoor and indoor spaces. Originally a painting major, she transitioned to sculpture and earned an MFA from American University. Her sculptures, noted for their elegant strength, symbolize communication and resilience, such as boots representing her late mother.
Tae D. Kim-James is a contemporary artist with a BFA in Fine Art (Sculpture) from Seoul National University and an M.Arch from Virginia Tech. Inspired by Daniel Arsham’s “Future Relics,” Kim-James’ “Fictional Archaeology” reinterprets everyday objects as artifacts from the distant future. This concept challenges conventional ideas of time and history, critically examining the narratives tied to our surroundings. His work encourages reflection on the fleeting nature of material existence and the fluidity of time, aiming to spark curiosity and deep thought in viewers. His innovative approach is highly anticipated.
Kim Hong-mi captivated audiences with her intricate ceramic works, blending pottery and stoneware to create layered pieces. Her work process, which can take up to four months, emphasizes the unique colors and characteristics of each clay type. She prefers round shapes with jagged, unfinished edges, contrasting the smooth, warm forms. By layering glazes up to 14 times, she adds depth and co
