Our newest group, TOBSOBs made a visit to Cartwright Hall last week to further develop and research their supported Place Marker project about the disappeared Bradford Canal. They took time to check out the exhibition there by young people, for young people and it provoked lots of thoughts and conversation about mental health, identity and what makes a tidy bedroom.

The group’s new name is inspired by their bus journeys with to the sites we have visited so far. More about that later.

Last week, young people from the various Ignite projects had the amazing opportunity to learn all about the life of Chevaliere D'Eon - a transgender 18th century soldier, diplomat, and spy. A talk was delivered by the amazing Luna Morgana ( ) in front of D'Eon's sword held in the . After a fascinating learning experience, the young people were tasked with making part of a tapestry inspired from what they had just learned.

This was a wonderful learning experience, and an incredibly important one as well. It brought light to q***r history that is sometimes much more hidden from the public eye - something that Luna has been working increasingly on. Visit her Instagram or website to view the amazing work she has done!

Full photos of the tapestry will be soon available to view on our upcoming gallery post!

What a great day to be exploring the canals of Shipley (yes, more than one!) . We spent today bringing together a new team to work on a very exciting new supported project for young people.

We will be announcing more about this new strand of work which brings together local young people, from , and on a missions to mark a significant but uncelebrated local landmark. My ā€˜Young Makers’ murals are now on display at Weston Park Museum ! šŸŒž

In November and December 2021, I worked in collaboration with 16 young people to explore how their age group has been represented throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. The group identified different themes that were important to them, from ā€˜politics’ to ā€˜pride’, ā€˜food’ to ā€˜finance’. I then worked with the groups creative responses to paint these wall panels.

The project was part of Young Makers, a creative, work experience programme for young people aged 14-25 that provides opportunities to develop skills and experience through a variety of museum-based activity.

We built a house!
Four years after we started this project, the bodger’s lodge is finally just about finished! Today we worked on the front paving and dry stone wall. It’s been such a fun project, from doing the heritage woodwork at the start to make the frame, wattle and daubing the walls, building the loft room, making the stained glass and now adding all the finishing touches. Kind of want to move in now…

Amazing news for Long Division!

We are unbelievably pleased to share that we've been awarded £11,000 from Arts Council England to continue our award winning programme 🤩

This allows us to deliver another Amplify programme where we can support young people to create new bands (and offer a slot at the festival!), more AAA sessions, school time and songwriters socials.

These programmes are free to attend and are intended to be 'real' experiences outside of classrooms that are exciting, thought-provoking and engage Wakefield young people with music and the city!

If you’d like to be involved please email us at [email protected] šŸ‘‹

Meet the fourth member of our team over here at Ignite; Asher!
---------------------------------------------
Asher is youth coach and community developer from Leeds. His social change work engages with issues around racial justice and climate change at a grassroots level.

A little bit about Asher:
Asher is a blues and jazz guitarist, and also enjoys mountaineering and nature writing. If he could do anything he wanted, he would live somewhere quiet and slow, and write music and poetry.

Meet Marie in our third part of our Meet the Team series!
---------------------------------------------
Hi! My name is Marie Millward and I am the Project Manager for Ignite Yorkshire. This means it is my job to make sure that all the partners work together to make the project a success. Success means that we use the project’s funds to support young people to explore industrial heritage in all sorts of ways so that they gain something out of it, such as skills for employment, a space to collaborate with other young people, hopefully also having an enjoyable time! Success also means persuading more people and organisations in the worlds of heritage, culture and youth work that this is a great recipe and everyone can benefit from young people being really involved in heritage. If places like museums are not actively working to including young people in what they, they really are missing something vital.

I started working for We are IVE Ltd as the Project Manager at the start of the project and was drawn to this job because it is very unusual to see this combination of partners, activities and aspirations in a project combined with the freedom to try new ways of working. I am also really interested in industrial heritage and how it relates to where we live, how we think about ourselves and what it means for people who (unlike me) were born in this, the 21st , century.

A little bit about me:
I love growing things in my garden – flowers rather than things to eat. For my whole life have been interested in nature and how things grow. This led me to study a degree in ecology and I started my working life as an Environmental Scientist so it has been a long and varied journey from there to what I do now, but somehow it all connects.

Welcome to our Meet the Team series! Each day this week we will be introducing each member of the team over here at Ignite; kicking things of with Eleanor, our digital content assistant!
----------------------------------------
Hello! My name is Eleanor Chesterton and I work as a Digital Content Assistant for Ignite Yorkshire. This means I am usually the one behind Ignite's social media posts you see (including this one!) but I also write for the website and have conducted an interview!

I came to work with Ignite through one of their projects with Sheffield Museums that I was involved in. I completed an internship in the summer, and was fortunate to continue working with Ignite ever since! This work allows me to promote heritage learning opportunities to young people in Yorkshire - helping keep heritage work alive.

A little bit about me:
I am a student studying Archaeology with a focus on the Stone Age! I hope to be able to go into further research surrounding this period or work as a public historian.
