LT GEN Steven W. Gilland, the 61st Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy - West Point, recently visited the Harbor Defense Museum at USAG Fort Hamilton.

It was an honor and pleasure to share our local history with LTG Gilland.

Do you know the museum is an annex of the West Point Museum?

On this date:

"Rodman 20-inch Gun, tested at USAG Fort Hamilton, October 26th, 1864 (159 years ago).

Rodman, famous for having invented a process for casting guns of enormous size hollow, and cooling them from the inside by passing a stream of water through the bore was at this time Superintendent of the Watertown Arsenal.

The gun was cast at the Fort Pitt Foundry, Pittsburgh and weighed 116,000 pounds. The carriage, made at Watertown Arsenal, near Boston, weighed 35,000 pounds.

This is the largest piece of ordnance in existence and carries a shot weighing a half a ton. It is thought that the range of this gun will be five or six miles.

This gun is not mounted in the fort, but in the tier of 15-inch guns which extends along the embankment for a quarter of a mile below the fort, commanding the lower bay and forming part of the defenses of the New York harbor.”
-Harpers Weekly - Nov 19 1864.

Note: It took 7-10 minutes to load and fire with a 9-man crew.

Hamilton’s 20-inch Rodman gun is now located in John Paul Jones Park just outside the main gate.

One of the most precious artifacts in the collection is the structure the museum is located in, the caponier. Today, the caponier stands as the only unmodified portion of the fort.

This structure, with loopholes and howitzer embrasures, provided the principal defense of the ditch. It’s role was to defend the back of Fort Hamilton against land-based infantry attacks.

Its doors were large enough to allow flank howitzers and carriages to enter the caponier.

A 24-pounder flank howitzer is on display in the museum (the 24-pounder flank howitzer was found in the caponier, thus probably one of original guns provided).

To see the caponier for yourself, schedule your appointment to visit by calling 718/630-4349 or emailing [email protected]

What’s in our collections?

Take a look at a P1902, artillery, enlisted men’s dress coat.

This dress coat is dark blue with red trim, made of wool. It has shoulder straps and a standing collar.

On the right sleeve is a 2nd class gunner’s patch.
But look at the background, a heart shaped section of material.

This coat has no provenance, we can only guess what the heart means.

More than likely just a personal decorative touch, non-standard addition.

One colleague joked, maybe he wore his heart on his sleeve?

Thoughts?

The Harbor Defense Museum at Fort Hamilton, with its collections of weaponry, uniforms and memorabilia from the American Revolution to World War II, is an interesting destination for a class trip.

In honor of the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month, we remember Major General Luis Raul Esteves (USMA 1915).

General Esteves was the first Puerto Rican to graduate from West Point, doing so with the Class of 1915, also known as “The Class the Stars Fell On.” His entry into the Academy was initially denied because, at the time, Puerto Ricans were not yet granted US citizenship . After deliberation, and taking into consideration the commissioning of such officers as the Marquis de Lafayette and Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben during the War of Independence, his application was accepted.

He entered West Point during the summer of 1911 with other notables such as Dwight D. Eisenhower, whom Esteves tutored in Spanish. Esteves commissioned with the Class of 1915 and served with distinction throughout his career. He eventually achieved the rank of Major General in the US Army. Today, he is known as the “Father of the Puerto Rico National Guard” which he founded in 1919.

Recently our Curator attended the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) 2023 Annual Conference in Boise, Idaho.

He actively participated in the Strategic Planning for the U.S. 250th Anniversary workshop and three sessions (Approaches to the 250th: Early Lessons from Across the Country, Legacies of the Bicentennial at Parks: Reframing Narratives, and The U.S. Semi-quincentennial and the Power of Imagery) that were designed to help organizations prepare for the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War.

For those unaware, USAG Fort Hamilton has a direct connection to the Battle of Brooklyn (Long Island) and the larger fight, the Battle for New York. The aerial photograph from 1935, the arrow points at Gravesend Beach (what remained at that time), the beach the British landed on in August of 1776. Fort Hamilton sits on part of the landing site. Keep in mind, the Battle of Brooklyn is the first battle fought after declaring our independence.

The Harbor Defense Museum has exhibit space dedicated to interpreting the battle. Our goal is to upgrade this area by the time of the 250th anniversary. Within our strategic plan is to provide more information on the British amphibious landing, the role of African Americans, women, and Indigenous People, and to bring in new artifacts for exhibition related to the battle.

Stay tuned….

Today we hosted Soldiers from the 1-345th Brigade Engineer Battalion, out of Camp Atterbury, Indiana.

USAG Fort Hamilton was one of many stops as they visited several Revolutionary War Sites in New York.

It was only fitting to host the 1-345th during the week of the 247th anniversary of the Battle for Brooklyn.

It was a pleasure to share with these fine Soldiers our local connection to the Battle for New York (1776), which included a classroom presentation on the Battle of Brooklyn.

Yesterday the museum hosted military spouses through the USO’s Coffee Connections Program.

USO Coffee Connections is a monthly program for military spouses for them to connect, explore, create, and make new friends.

Like our service members, military spouses know what it means to make sacrifices for our values and freedoms — stepping up every day to shoulder the unique burdens that come with military life.

Did anyone else catch a glimpse of the Coast Guards training vessel, the USCGC Eagle as she left NYC’s harbor?

While the Eagle’s primary mission for the Coast Guard is to train cadets and officer candidates, it also serves a public relations role.

The Eagle was constructed in Hamburg, Germany in 1936. The 295-foot ship was commissioned as Horst Wessel and served as one of three sail-training ships operated by the German navy before World War II. At the end of the war, the ship was taken by the United States as war reparation.

She is one of only two active commissioned sailing vessels in the United States military today – can you name the other one?

We apologize for our little break, but we are back!

Check out some cloth insignia from our collection.

It is said the most prolific type of cloth insignia to coast artillery is enlisted men rating insignia of the 1900-1930’s.
The purpose of the specialized insignia was to show the specialty and level of qualification of the individual soldier.
The competition was tough and successful achievement meant a chance to be selected for advance training at the Fort Monroe enlisted specialty schools.

The insignia shown are from the 1908 Quartermaster uniform catalog.

Check out this image, an aerial photograph of the NYC Harbor.

Because of its strategic importance and being a wealthy metropolis, NYC was well defended by US Army fortifications.

Can you name the fortifications listed below?

Do you know how Soldiers tracked vessels entering the harbor in the late 19th Century?

That is once a vessel was sighted, how this ship was carefully watched, the course marked and followed on a map, so that the time and conditions of firing at this vessel may be calculated to a precision.

There were observation stations on USAG Fort Hamilton and Fort Wadsworth. The distance between the two was 2160 yards, thus giving the observers a base line of length from which to make their calculations.
The baseline enabled Soldiers to determine the position of the ship at the exact spot in the bay.

During the late 19th Century communication between the two fortifications was done by signal flags.

In the casemates below the observation stations were plotting rooms - filled with charts, instruments, and maps of the bay.
The Soldiers tracking vessels in these rooms required a comprehensive knowledge of higher mathematics and surveying – and required Soldiers to make quick calculations with the guarantee they are correct.

With these new skill requirements, one can see why the Army decided to organize the new Corps of Artillery into separate companies of field and coast artillery during the early 20th Century.

On December 7th, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. One of the ships struck by Japanese bombers was the USS Arizona.

One bomb detonated the Arizona’s forward magazines. The ship exploded in a huge fireball, killing 1,177 of its officers and crewmen.

Did you know the USS Arizona was built in our own backyard?

That’s correct the Arizona was built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in the 1910s.

Just think, Soldiers at USAG Fort Hamilton watched the Arizona sail out to sea.

Yesterday staff from the West Point Museum delivered a M1860, 15” Rodman Gun Model.
This model is marked, "U.S. Arsenal/ (1866)/Watertown, Mass."

The 15-inch Rodman gun was among the largest cannons used during the American Civil War.
At one time, Fort Hamilton’s armament included sixteen, 15-inch Rodman guns.
None of Fort Hamilton’s 15” Rodman guns survived the scrap drives; this model helps us tell our story.

We need your help on this one.

Can you see the diamond in the brick work?
Do you see two diamonds?

Recently one of our volunteers noticed it on the brick work ceiling of the museum (caponier).
The unknown mason left this unique mark, outlined in darker shaded bricks.

This structure was design and used to protect the rear of Fort Hamilton from a land-based infantry attack.
It is over 190 years old.

Upon further research, our team still hasn’t figured out what the symbol represents.

Do you?

Happy Thanksgiving.

Recently the museum team led a staff ride on the Battle of Brooklyn with twenty (20) Officers from the US Army Recruiting NYC(NYCRB).

Along with our coastal defense education program, the museum also has an education program on the Battle of Brooklyn.

The purpose of this staff ride was to present an analysis of the first major battle of the US Army from certain viewpoints.

This type of program provides the Soldier with a clearer understanding of the role of history in present and future operational and strategic planning.

The museum director led the program off by setting the scene of the battle, which included an overview of both Armies. (Keep in mind, Fort Hamilton sits on the site of the British amphibious landing.)

Officers Company Leadership Teams (CLT) from the NYCRB were formed and applied the Army Design Methodology (ADM) to analyze specific tactical engagements during the Battle of Brooklyn.

Each CLT briefed at their designated historical site and provided their analysis of the battle.

Our goal is to train and develop the most lethal soldiers - Educate, Honor, and Inspire.

“No one who carries the mantle of leadership can do so without a knowledge of history.”
- David McCullough

Take a look at this aerial photograph of Fort Hamilton. The fort's gun batteries line the shore.

Look at the strip of land the red arrow is pointing at in this photo.
What is that?

Upon further research it was an airport for a Naval Reserve Aviation Unit, established by the Navy in May 1923 as an experimental double unit, providing facilities and aircraft for naval reserve aviators, so as to maintain their proficiency.
The unit was set up on a decommissioned Navy kite balloon station that was in service during WW I.
The property was owned by the City of Brooklyn Police Aerial Squadron, who had been loaned aircraft by the Navy.
The unit had a staff of six: two officers (Lt. & Ensign,) and 6 enlisted men.

American Army

The call is after soundin’ assembly for parade:
The sergeants front an’ centre, have dutifully said,
“All present or accounted for, “an’ while the bugles blow,
With “Forward-guide right-march.” We do the best we know.
Us Englishmen an’ Frenchmen, Hungarians an’ Scotch, Eyetalyans an’ Dutch: An’ Scandinavians from above, An’ Switzers from below,
For there you see, before you the – American Army O!

Their ‘coutrements are pretty slick, for who could wear the Blue.
An’ breathe this air, an’ not resolve to do as Romans do?
An’ faith, if not, they’ll quickly learn in quite another way,
By marching to the guardhouse or by losing half their pay.
Those Englishmen an’ Frenchmen, Hungarians an’ Scotch, Eyetalyans an’ Dutch: An’ Scandinavians from above, An’ Switzers from below,
For there you see, before you the – American Army O!

Here brown men, an’ black men an’ red men are seen,
An’ tall men an’ small men an’ fat men an’ lean,
With short steps an’ long steps – a canter and a walk-
An’ holy Moses! What a babel, when you hear’em talk!
Those Englishmen an’ Frenchmen, Hungarians an’ Scotch, Eyetalyans an’ Dutch: An’ Scandinavians from above, An’ Switzers from below,
For there you see, before you the – American Army O!

Maginnis scowls at Johnny Bull, an’ Yawcob Meyer roars at Jean Duval;
An’ I have heard the company countin’ fours.
In seven different languages, on which eventful day
The captain burst a blood vessel an’ fainted dead away.
Those Englishmen an’ Frenchmen, Hungarians an’ Scotch, Eyetalyans an’ Dutch:
An’ Scandinavians from above, An’ Switzers from below,
For there you see, before you the – American Army O!

Ah, will we never see the time when, as our glances run
Along the line, we’ll only find Americans – everyone!
Who love the “sky-born beauties” that from yonder flagstaff wave,
Of which they mothers sweetly sung-their fathers bled to save?
No Englishmen no Frenchmen, Hungarians or Scotch,
Eyetalyans or Germans, No Irishmen nor Dutch,
But true-born, stanch Americans,
Whose hearts with home love glow, Then-then my man! You will witness an
American Army O!

Last week USAG Fort Hamilton hosted their annual 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony. Twenty-one (21) years ago nearly 3,000 people lost their lives during the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

During the ceremony Fort Hamilton’s Command Team honored the memories of those we lost and paid tribute to their families. The lives of those lost will never be forgotten.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Pamela Newman, Civilian Aid to the Secretary of the Army, New York South.

A frequent question heard at the museum is why Fort Hamilton is still open. One reason is Fort Hamilton is the home to one of the largest recruiting operations in country, the US Army Recruiting NYC, and the New York MEPS, 2nd BN, US Military Entrance Processing Command.

Another reason is the support the US Army and the Department of Defense can provide to the NYC region during an emergency.
For example, Fort Hamilton and its team supported NYC during the Draft Riots of NYC, Hurricane Sandy, COVID 19 pandemic, and 9/11.

Today, USAG Fort Hamilton is the only active military base in New York City.
