White Columns

White Columns White Columns is New York's oldest alternative art space. It was founded in 1970 by Jeffrey Lew and Gordon Matta-Clark as an experimental platform for artists.
(33)

Originally located in SoHo (and known as the 112 Workshop/112 Greene Street), the organization was renamed White Columns when it moved to Spring Street in 1979. In 1991 White Columns moved to Christopher Street in the West Village, and in 1998 the gallery relocated to its present address on the border of the West Village and Meat Packing District. White Columns presents an ongoing program of exhibitions, projects, talks, screenings, and events. It is a not-for-profit gallery which is open to the public, free-of-charge, eleven months per year.

Currently on view at White Columns, 'A Mountain Girl with Skyblue Teeth' by Daisy May Sheff.

Writing about her approach Sheff has stated: “My paintings offer glimpses into detailed, private narratives. The paintings share the arbitrary laws of fairytales – a world outside of everyday existence with a logic all its own. They are at once sincere and absurd. All these images recall pieces of stories, which I reconfigure, in a search for something essential to emerge."

A review of Gerald Jackson’s exhibition at White Columns in the New Yorker!

Jackson's exhibition at White Columns is the second in a series of three related exhibitions that will consider different aspects of Jackson’s prolific, now six-decade career as a multi-disciplinary artist and poet. The first exhibition took place at Wilmer Jennings Gallery at Kenkeleba House in late 2020, and the third will take place in November at Gordon Robichaux, New York.

A big thank you to Johanna Fateman for the response to Gerald's work!

A review of Daisy May Sheff’s NY solo debut at White Columns in the new April 12th thru April 25th issue of New York Magazine!

Sheff’s exhibition comprises a group of fifteen paintings produced over the past year. The exhibition’s title 'A Mountain Girl with Skyblue Teeth' is adapted from the lyrics of Marc Bolan’s pre-Glam era 1969 song ‘Cat Black (The Wizard’s Hat)’. In her re-reading of the lyric, Bolan’s original ‘Mountain Man’ has been transformed into Sheff’s ‘Mountain Girl.’

Thanks to Jerry Saltz for the response to Daisy's work!

Excited to share that these two works by Helen Rae (1938-2021) have entered the permanent collection of MoMA! 😊

Both works were included in Helen Rae's New York solo debut at White Columns in 2017.

Helen's exhibition at White Columns was her second solo exhibition, following her widely acclaimed 2015 Los Angeles debut at The Good Luck Gallery.

A special thank you to Paige Wery and everyone at Tierra Del Sol and First Street Gallery for your long-term support of Helen and advocacy for her work.

And a huge thank you to Marty and Rebecca Eisenberg for making this happen!
