White Columns White Columns is New York's oldest alternative art space.
(34)

White Columns is New York's oldest alternative art space. It was founded in 1970 by Jeffrey Lew and Gordon Matta-Clark as an experimental platform for artists. Originally located in SoHo (and known as the 112 Workshop/112 Greene Street), the organization was renamed White Columns when it moved to Spring Street in 1979. In 1991 White Columns moved to Christopher Street in the West Village, and in 1998 the gallery relocated to its present address on the border of the West Village and Meat Packing District. White Columns presents an ongoing program of exhibitions, projects, talks, screenings, and events. It is a not-for-profit gallery which is open to the public, free-of-charge, eleven months per year.

#FBF to our Yusef Lateef exhibition, November 8- December 20, 2014 ‘Towards the Unknown’ - curated by Alhena Katsof.

Yusef Lateef was a musician engaged with ‘autophysiophysic music’ which he described as music that comes from one’s physical, mental and spiritual self or ‘from the heart’. His drawing practice was informed by his musical methods, wherein the ‘feeling tone’ of a singular gesture inspires the next.

He is quoted in the press release; “I have a thing about improvised music. The word ‘improvise’ means to do something without previous preparation. But this music isn’t prepared without preparation. John Coltrane used to practice 13, 14 hours a day. That’s a lot of preparation.”

The watercolor paintings on Mitsumata Paper 🌫 ✨by Wilder Alison are not studies for the surrounding wool works of ‘Slit Subjects’, but objects in their own right

Though similar in concept to her larger-scale dyed wool works which pull inspiration from Monique Wittig’s “The Lesbian Body” these drawings create their own guiding structures within the realm of splits

Today we are here until 6pm Admission free. All welcome

Happy Saturday! Stop on by. Our current 🐾 Grant Levy-Lucero exhibition is paws down unmissable

Displayed on a shelf and a stepped approximation of a winner’s podium - with its inevitable emphasis on the hierarchies of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place - Levy-Lucero’s pots might also be read as ‘trophies’ (of a kind)

We are open Tuesday-Saturday 11am-6pm

White Columns is New York's oldest alternative art space. We were initially known as 112 Greene Street, Founded in 1970 by a group of artists including Jeffrey Lew and Gordon Matta-Clark as an experimental platform for art

Pictured is “Rooster Bed Lying (1971)”, at our original space. It was an installation starring a rooster the artist rescued from slaughter. Bill Beckley purchased the rooster for his art piece from a butcher on Broome Street, and gave it a thin mattress for the rooster to live and start a family
