This built-in cupboard in the dining room holds more than dishes. Its blue-and-white earthenware reflects English and Dutch styles that crossed the Atlantic. Pieces like these were used in everyday life and would also show a household’s prosperity.

Next up, in our Voices of 1776 social media series, we highlight the women connected to the Conference House and the generations of work required to maintain a colonial home through changing times.

The Conference House was not only a site of diplomacy and war, but also a family home shaped by the lives of the women who lived there. When the house was built around 1680, Elizabeth Scott Billopp managed daily life while her husband, Captain Christopher Billopp, was often away on naval duties. In the early 1700s, daughters Mary and Anne Billopp helped oversee the household and property. Later, Frances Willett Billopp, wife of Loyalist Colonel Christopher Billopp, lived at the house during the years leading up to the 1776 Peace Conference and the growing uncertainty of war around New York Harbor.

Their work reflected the responsibilities carried by many women in colonial America during a period of political and military uncertainty. The story of the Revolution was shaped not only by military leaders and political debates, but also by the women whose labor and daily lives supported the world around them. Across nearly a century, these women sustained the household and preserved the family legacy through changing times, demonstrating resilience, care, and leadership in the face of historical upheaval.

Some of the history inside the Conference House is right beneath your feet!

The brick floor in the Colonial Kitchen was originally laid in the 17th century, but many of its bricks were removed in the early 1900s. Replacements were later made in Holland using the original molds along with several glazed bricks stamped “VLC HOLLAND 1929”.

At the center is an unpainted brick gifted by Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. Visit the Conference House for a tour this weekend and see if you can spot it!

Mark your calendars for The Sword and the Olive Branch The Battle of Brooklyn and the Staten Island Peace Conference of 1776, on Saturday, October 17, from 12–2 p.m. in the Conference House Colonial Kitchen.

This free educational program connects the August 27, 1776 Battle of Brooklyn—the Revolutionary War's largest battle—with the subsequent September 11 peace conference held at the Billopp House (Conference House) on Staten Island between Congress’s delegates John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Edward Rutledge and British Admiral Lord Richard Howe. Following their victory in Brooklyn, the British believed the rebels would be agreeable to renouncing the Declaration of Independence. However, the American delegates at the conference refused, solidifying the American commitment to independence.

The program will feature the placement of a new historical marker sponsored by the Battle of Brooklyn Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) on the grounds of Conference House Park and a talk by Dr. Phillip Papas, Senior Professor of History at UCNJ, Union College of Union County, New Jersey, and a member of the Conference House Association Board of Directors and Norman Goben, Historian and Chaplain of the Battle of Brooklyn Chapter of the SAR.
