This chapter of our Voices of 1776 social media series highlights Edward Rutledge, the youngest delegate at the Peace Conference, whose voice reflected the courage of a rising generation.

Edward Rutledge was the youngest delegate at the Peace Conference at just 26 years old, already serving as a representative of South Carolina in the Continental Congress. Despite his youth, he displayed determination and a strong commitment to the cause of independence.

On September 11, 1776, Rutledge walked into the Conference House on Staten Island seeking peace. Britain offered reconciliation, but denied independence, a choice he refused in defense of liberty. Though young, he faced Britain’s most powerful negotiators with resolve and clarity, proving that courage does not always come with age.

Rutledge’s presence at the Conference House reminds us that history is shaped not only by experience but by the bold actions of the young. His voice carried the determination of a generation willing to defend liberty, even in the face of overwhelming odds.

Celebrate the courage of youth and conviction. Your $250 gift secures your name on our permanent plaque inside the Conference House, the site where Edward Rutledge helped shape history. Join us in preserving these voices. https://www.givesignup.org/DonationWebsite/ConferenceHouseAssociation/Donate
