Marlborough New York is pleased to present Stephen Hannock’s recent body of work.

At the center of the exhibition will be A Recent History of Art in Southern California (Mass MoCA #165), 1998-2021, shown completed for the first time after 23 years in the making. It will be accompanied by one of the artist’s emblematic oxbow paintings, as well as a number of small paintings that articulate Hannock’s diverse palette and artistic maturity.

A Recent History of Art in Southern California (Mass MoCA #165) is a panoramic quadriptych of the Los Angeles basin depicted in the city’s cinematic twilight. The ambitious work celebrates the recent prominence and autonomy of Los Angeles' contemporary art scene on the heels of the groundbreaking Pacific Standard Time exhibitions. Beyond the anchoring visual topography of Los Angeles, there is an entirely imaginary landscape; the painting was synthesized from a composite viewpoint somewhere along Mulholland Drive, the Stone Canyon Reservoir and the iconic Hollywood sign. It incorporates the artist’s handwritten texts and photographs—these instances of diaristic “interjection,” in essence, turn the expansive vista into a geographic self-portrait.

Stephen Hannock is on view through July 2 at 545 West 25th Street.

Marlborough New York is pleased to present new work by the New York-based artist Ahmed Alsoudani.

Alsoudani returns for his third solo exhibition at Marlborough with his distinctive paintings of polychromatic forms that writhe through suggested interior spaces. Whereas much of the artist's previous works on canvas incorporate charcoal and colored pencil throughout, the present group of paintings is predominantly composed in pure acrylic. The works on view are inspired in part by the artist's ongoing interest in the body (here, the artist has studied medical texts and drawings), with certain passages evoking body parts, sexual organs, anatomical cross-sections of muscles, bones, and organs, as well as globular forms suggestive of cells.

Ahmed Alsoudani is on view through July 2 at 545 West 25th Street.

Marlborough New York is pleased to publish a catalog revisiting Bill Brandt’s Perspective of N**es to accompany its spring exhibition of the of German-born British photographer. The catalog features an essay co-authored by Martina Droth, Deputy Director and Chief Curator at the Yale Center for British Art and Paul Messier, Head of the Lens Media Lab at the Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage at Yale University.

The 1961 publication of Bill Brandt’s Perspective of N**es marked the point at which Brandt’s stature as an art world figure came onto assured footing. The original publication not only received press attention, including a feature in Life Magazine, but also became the subject of a major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which traveled internationally. Brandt’s first exhibition at Marlborough New York in 1976 was a critical turning point in situating photography within the context of fine art.

Bill Brandt is on view in Marlborough New York’s second floor gallery through May 8th.

Our winter exhibitions close this Saturday, February 27th.

In the first floor galleries, we take a moment to reunite Alice Aycock and Dennis Oppenheim, two kindred spirits in a play of synergistic works that have long and deep histories of particular resonance with the downtown scene in New York.

On the second floor, a selection of works from Brassaï’s nighttime series build a visual time capsule depicting the various facets of what nocturnal Paris and its underground subculture of the 1930s had to offer.

Appointments to view the exhibitions are encouraged, but not necessary. To schedule an appointment, please DM us, call (212) 541-4900 or write [email protected].

Ivana Bašić’s Belay my light, the ground is gone is featured in INCORPOREA #3, a year-long choral exhibition set up as to develop and transform itself over time. INCORPOREA is aimed at investigating the body in all its folds and meanings: the body as a revolutionary space, of antagonism and freedom, expression and research, self-definition and power, identity and gender.

The exhibition is on view from February 18 through March 13, 2021 at Basement Roma, Rome, Italy. To learn more, visit: http://basementroma.com
