Humbaba and Medusa
Long before there was Medusa, there was a terrifying Mesopotamian demon named Humbaba. He was so powerful that Mesopotamian artists carved his face on roof tiles to protect people inside from evil spirits. (Check out that scary face on the left.)
The ancient Greeks followed suit, using images of one of their scary monsters — Medusa — to protect them from evil. Like Humbaba, she's seen on roof tiles (like the one on right) along with drinking cups, vases, and even amulets that people would carry with them.
