If you missed our ARTIST TALK, here’s one of the questions and answers from conceptual artist Lulu Meng .space and curator Sophia Chizuco  on our current solo exhibition “Between Lines”

Question: Can you talk about how the prints came about? What inspired you to use the circular objects from the installation and turn them into a print?

LuLu: I would thank you [Sophia] for your suggestion because I was carving the surface, and then I was thinking of drawing...Sophia did a studio visit and mentioned that it would be really nice at one point to have white on white. In a mirror, you can see yourself; it's always like reversed. But
making a print is also like what is the real thing. This is the surface, but when you see the prints, it's not really the same size because it's reversed. Thinking about this idea, reflection, projection, and then making an imprint, then this impression, elaborating this idea of an impression when you see a surface, and you're making a print, a lot of times that print is not perfectly catch[ing] what every detail is on the original surface. Each time when you make a print, there is a select curation of each print

Sophia: Because their [LuLu] character is white [the color]. For this show, I knew the space really well, so when people come inside, it's a pull...I wanted people to see the wall first, and then they will see what is going on inside and then they will see this is white on white. This is rice paper, so it is very delicate, and I wanted to give the audience to feel something going on inside and come into the piece to see the connection. It would be nice, so I needed something here. I'm glad the prints came out perfectly.

Question: How do the sculptures function for you in correlation to the installation, or how would you like the audience to interpret them?

LuLu: The wired sculptures have this shape, a very simple gesture of drawings. I have been drawing this shape in my sketchbook for a long time, but during the residency , I [also] tried to make them three-dimensional. It's a human silhouette. It's very simple; there is no face. It can allow the visitor to have their imagination because it's a simple shape, but depending on how it bends, its size and the height, almost like each shape has its own emotion, its own personality. Together I call the wired sculpture "my own flower arrangement" because I have a base, and I started to put them on and then it starts to become a form, individually visibly, it's one wire. [Still] together, they function as a whole; they create another shape, and that's the form of the sculpture. Also connecting with the installation, the surface imagines the surface of the drawing is a drawing, and I turn it into carvings [on the circular objects] and make prints.

Question: What brought the idea of the show Between Lines together?

Sophia: Talking about the show, we [Sophia & Kay] saw Lulu's residency work, and back then, there were fewer pieces, and we thought it would be beautiful for this space. Usually, I see the work first, and then I do the curating, so it is much easier to see, but there are so many new pieces here it turned out so good.

LuLu: They [Sophia & Kay] were doing a studio visit. They're all new works I made from sculpture space in Ithaca, where I had a residency during April and May. I started the wired sculptures and the installation, Correlation there. The circular objects are all connected in one line. So when they were thinking of the title of the show, I was thinking of something completely different because I have a scientific background. So because they are circles, I thought zero equals to zero equals to zero like, in English, Chinese and mathematics zero, but then Sophia came up with the title Between Lines which I really liked because the installation is connected between one line and the wired sculptures are all symbols of connection.

Text and photos by Ruben Natal-San Miguel

In his essay, Ruben Natal-San Miguel writes , “In her first solo US exhibition at SFA Projects titled Between Lines conceptual artist Lulu Meng addresses notions of inclusiveness, togetherness and belonging. With a celebration and gathering of circular/round shapes, drawings and stainless steel/wood sculptures that represent humanity from all walks of life - individual units are presented as a whole.”
