Andrea Rosen Gallery

Andrea Rosen Gallery Contemporary art gallery with two locations on 24th Street in Chelsea
(33)

Andrea Rosen Gallery was inaugurated in January, 1990, with a seminal exhibition of work by Félix González-Torres. This exhibition would set the pace and agenda for the entire program of the gallery: conceptually rigorous, fully aware of the responsibility of putting one's subjectivity in the public realm, and unafraid of actually being beautiful. It has always been the goal of the gallery to reta

in a specific territory for each artist that we represent. What defines the artists as a group is that each, independently, is fully responsible to the medium of their choice and is fully questioning of the role that art plays in the contemporary social-political, and/or cultural arena. We see the responsibility of the gallery as threefold: to work for the long-term development of each artist's career, acting as a liaison to international galleries and museums as well as placing works in collections; to create an historical archive for each artist; and to act as an accessible public space in which the exhibitions become an exemplary gesture of the power of subjectivity to the audience at large.

Elliott Hundley’s intricate and immersive works evolve from his historical research on theater, literature, and film, emerging in this exhibition from an exploration of Antonin Artaud’s enduringly imperative play “There Is No More Firmament.” Written in the 1930s and set in an imagined year 2000, th...

"Cárdenas excelled at creating suggestive, elusive arrangements of everyday items. He explored the sensuality of the zipper—that teasing metal barrier between dress and undress—years before Andy Warhol’s infamous Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers album cover from 1971. Open Fly Silver Star and Call Boy, both 1964, feature zippers halfway undone to reveal a collection of toys and mass-produced junk secreted beneath the works’ taut, shiny PVC shells."

"'Around ten years ago the world seemed really urgent to me,' explained St. John. 'I didn't want to do silkscreen like Andy Warhol: get the picture, send it out, screen it all night, and only after, you get the news. So I decided to use collage and get an immediate response. Get up in the morning, and work on it instantly.' Packed with visual information, history, understanding, and a willingness to keep negotiating all of it, the experience of These Days; Leaves of Grass is akin to an episode of Jeopardy!: while you may not know all the questions, it's still fun to reminisce over the answers."

I SIT and look out upon all the sorrows of the world, and upon all oppression and shame; I hear secret convulsive sobs from young men, at anguish with themselves, remorseful after deeds done; I see, in low life, the mother misused by her children, dying, neglected, gaunt, desperate; I see the wife m...

This was such a great show! Elliot Hundley, Andrea Rosen Gallery in 2014

Dove finisco io e cominci tu?
Cosa insegna la solitudine?
Come si vince la morte?
Scacco matto”.

Giulio Verago, Archivio Viafarini

Felix Gonzalez-Torres “Untitled’’ (Fortune Cookie Corner), 1990 is currently restaged by Andrea Rosen Gallery and David Zwirner by inviting 1000 people from all over the world to create the piece in their own spaces according to specific instructions (through July 5). The original piece was constructed of 10,000 fortune cookies presented in a pile that visitors were invited to take from and consume. It was part of a series of similar installations by Gonzales-Torres in a series titled Candy Works (1990-1991). The Cuban artist who passed away at the age of 38, was active in several social and political causes as an openly gay man creating work that encouraged community education and activism. Often using readily available, everyday materials to create work that asked viewers to take an active part in creating its meaning.

In an era of social distancing, can a fortune cookie help bring us together?

Iowa Arts Fellow Amenda Tate was invited to be a “place” in the official installation of a work by the late artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres.

In conjunction with Andrea Rosen Gallery and David Zwirner, the exhibition is a response to Covid-19 and seeks to reflect on this unique moment in history. Invitees are given a specific set of instructions for installation, which includes between 240-1000 cookies in their pile to be regenerated once during the exhibition.

To read more about this global art installation, head to Amenda's blog below!
