Eric Fischl's new exhibition "Rift Raft" at Skarstedt Gallery on the upper east side, NY is not to be missed. The talk last night between Eric Fischl and Rachael Corbitt was packed and one of the best conversations between artist and art critic that I've been to in a long time. This was because Eric Fischl was so informative about his work and all of the work leading up to this exhibition. I found his new work exciting and right on the mark. He is definitely attuned to the culture of today. Disconnect is a good word to describe the constant obsession with the cell phone we experience in his paintings. We don't see the art at a gallery or museum anymore because we are on our cell phones. We are missing the experience. I loved the show. You will too.

An exciting exhibition at the Jewish Museum of the work of Landscape architect and artist Roberto Burle Marx, whom I was fortunate to have known.

Roberto Burle Marx (1909–1994) was one of the most influential landscape architects of the twentieth century, yet he is not a familiar figure outside of his native Brazil. He is best known for his iconic seaside pavements on Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach, and for his abstract, geometric garden designs. But his work encompasses an enormous range of artistic forms and styles: Burle Marx was a painter and sculptor; a designer of textiles, jewelry, theater sets, and costumes; a ceramicist and stained-glass artist. He was an avid art collector, a talented baritone, a consummate cook, and a visionary self-taught botanist and ecologist. For him, all these endeavors were equally important, facets of one another.

The Most Iconic Artists of the 1970s

Across the globe, the 1970s art world was shaken by reverberations from the social and political climate ignited in the previous decade—though the ideas proliferating in the realm of artmaking were still tethered to formalist concerns and intellectual inquiry. There’s nothing “usual” about an artist residency.
