Recipe for a Room: Places of Learning - Calendar - AIA New York / Center for Architecture

Join us Thursday 8/19 6pm EST - complimentary attendance!

Recipe for a Room is a model-making contest about building spatial, sculptural, miniature rooms while fostering fun, creativity and professional mentorship. For the 2021 edition, two-person teams, each comprised of a student and architect mentor, will design small-scale rooms for an educational setting to benefit an NYC-area nonprofit.

For over a year, students of all ages have had their educations interrupted and their classroom environments altered. Learning now happens, at least partially, through the window of a computer screen. Even as COVID-19 cases continue to go down, the next generation of classrooms will be a universal focus of 2021 and beyond.

Recipe for a Room asks student competitors to create a space for learning for children, ages preschool to high school. These spaces can be located anywhere: outdoors, indoors, on the roof of a Manhattan high-rise, in a park, or on the basketball court of a NYCHA property. The location and design of the learning space should serve its community well. Room models should be made entirely out of school supplies.

The competition is hosted by the AIANY Interiors Committee and will benefit Volunteers of America-Greater New York, one of the oldest and largest human services nonprofits in the metropolitan New York area.

2021 Gil Oberfield Lecture: Jaklitsch/Gardner Architects - Calendar - AIA New York / Center for Architecture

Thurs 5/20 6pm EST: The annual Gil Oberfield Memorial Lecture was founded in honor of Gil Oberfield, AIA, former member and chair of the AIANY Interiors Committee. The lecture brings to the podium speakers whose work excels in the field of interior architecture. This year’s lecture will feature Jaklitsch/Gardner Architects.

Jaklitsch/Gardner is an award-winning design practice with an international reputation for design excellence, material research, and an exacting commitment to craft. The firm was founded in 1998 and is led by Stephan Jaklitsch and Mark Gardner, who believe that design possesses the ability to communicate collective values, provide relevance, and create meaning.

Jaklitsch/Gardner has received AIANY Design Awards, an AIA National Honor Award for the Marc By Marc Jacobs Offices, Chicago Athenaeum Architecture Awards, Architizer A+ Awards, and have been honored by the Japan Institute of Architecture. Their work has been exhibited widely and featured in numerous publications, such as the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Interior Design magazine, Architectural Record, FRAME Magazine, Elle Décor, and Architectural Digest.

Join us as we investigate how architectural solutions to outdoor dining during the COVID-19 pandemic have affected the streetscape. Moderated by Michael Kimmelman (The New York Times), hear from Skylar Bisom-Rapp (Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU)); Michael Chen (Michael K. Chen Architecture); and Claire Weisz (WXY architecture + urban design) about what considerations, concepts, and policies the architecture and urban design community should be developing in conjunction with the city to reenvision our streets.

The AIANY Interiors Committee held their Annual Hamptons Tour on June 2nd. This year's tour was at Lauren Rottet's house in Montauk. Originally designed by George Nelson, the house was renovated by Lauren's firm, Rottet Studio.
