Opening tomorrow! Welcome to THE SALON

1. Lee Isles "Untitled 1" 2021
Lee Isles has a background in fine art and technology and lives in southwestern Vermont. Isles’ small-scale black and white images from a long-ago deserted nature preserve are poetic meditations on the metaphysical.

2. Chloe Jones "Calf" 2022
Chloe Jones has a background in art history and is currently pursuing an MFA from the University of Hartford. She lives in Brooklyn, New York and Fayetteville, Arkansas. Jones explores myth-making and kin—humans and animals—against a backdrop of her Arkansas family home.

3. Tom Klem "Passage" 2021
Tom Klem has a background in sculpture and magic history. He lives in New York City. Klem’s constructed black and white images reach to the Universe and are imbued with his deft hand as a sculptor and magician. Wilson’s monochromatic images suggest realms at once known and unknown, where fantasy, mystery, and narrative can be found.

Next Week in Welcome to THE SALON!

1. Irina Chaiet, "Untitled 3," 2023

Irina Chaiet was born in Russia and has a background in graphic design. She is currently pursuing an MFA in Photography from the University of Hartford and lives in Upstate New York. Chaiet boldly examines changes that loss, motherhood, and a move Upstate from her long-time urban home have presented.

2. Anastasia Davis "Untitled" 2023

Anastasia Davis was born in Ukraine and grew up in Israel and the United States. She has a background in psychology, is currently pursuing an MFA in Photography from the University of Hartford, and lives in New Haven, Connecticut. Davis’ black and white work is concerned with feeling, perception, and consciousness, and investigates how meaning can be made out of a relentless stream of sensation and information.

3. Pamela Fox "Plata Linings" 2023

Pamela Fox has a background in law and lives in Greenwich, Connecticut. Fox’s color images from the Bolivian salt flats transcend place and offer an experience of the sublime.

Announcing "Welcome to THE SALON"
Exhibition Opening Reception & Book Launch: September 13th 5-9 PM
Show runs through September 17th

Welcome to The Salon, a group show of recent photographic works by The Salon, a collective of nine image-makers led by the artist Janelle Lynch. The 10 artists featured in the exhibition include Irina Chaiet, Anastasia Davis, Pamela Fox, Lee Isles, Chloe Jones, Tom Klem, Lori Perbeck, Andrew Rizzardi, Michael Wilson, and Janelle Lynch, who curated the show and is participating in collaboration with Flowers Gallery, London.

The Salon is comprised of image makers who studied with Lynch during the last decade at the International Center of Photography in New York City. It follows a long tradition of photography groups with shared beliefs and aesthetic goals. Born in Lynch’s Long Island City studio in 2015, it was relaunched virtually during the pandemic in 2021. Members meet weekly for discussion about the creative process, photographic texts, poetry, artistic references, and for constructive feedback about their images. Once per month, guest artists are invited to present their work.
While diverse in their backgrounds, chosen media, and respective creative inquiries—from notions about perception and the metaphysical in nature to family history and the cycle of life—The Salon members are united by an ethos of artistic integrity, discipline, and intellectual vigor.

Welcome to The Salon showcases two large-scale cyanotypes from Janelle Lynch’s newest body of work, Endless Forms Most Beautiful, recently debuted at her solo exhibition at Flowers Gallery in London. In them, Lynch uses her body and wildlife and botanical remains in her quest to connect to the natural and spiritual worlds.

Dear Friends,

After 19 years, I have decided to close the gallery. My other project, Launch Photo Books, will also be closing (at least for the moment).

What may seem abrupt is actually a choice that I have been considering during the last few months. I’ve been blessed with a son, and with that have come new challenges that I need to meet with my time and resources.

I can no longer give Foley Gallery (my first baby!) the time and resources it needs to continue to flourish and support the artists and programming I do. It’s a teenager now, anyway!

I anticipate my last day to be Saturday, September 30th.

Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing photographs documenting the gallery's history over the last 19 years. Along with that, I will be putting the spotlight on the artists that I represent.

I am making one last push for my artists before I close this chapter of my life. If there is any work that would be appropriate for you, please contact me directly at [email protected], and we can work together to make this happen.

There will be a closing party to end all closing parties. Stay tuned for details.

I am experiencing happiness and sadness in sharing this news with you.

It's all good. The future looks bright!

Warm wishes,

Michael

In her series “My Father’s Toys,” Nadide Goksun revisits her father’s toy collection, which as a child fascinated her, but remained just out of reach. After her father passed away, she became the keeper of the collection, helping her to reconnect with memories of her childhood.

Her nostalgic and ethereal photographs at once give homage to the memory of her father, while also transporting viewers to our own childhoods, inspiring us to embrace the love, magic, and wonder that is all around.

Goksun's work will be on display here at Foley Gallery among the 7 other ExLab photographers until June 24th.

Turkish artist Suzette Dushi’s work is an exploration into the strange and unexpected patterns that exist within the architecture that surrounds us. Her photographic series “New York,” presents diptychs of New York City buildings paired with distorted architecture reflected on car hoods.

Through her use of light, texture, shape, and perspective shifts, fluid yet complex forms emerge. Juxtaposing realism with abstractions, Dushi’s work encourages us to seek the complexity within the everyday.

Installation shots of our current exhibition Land/e/scape:

While each woman works in a different medium, all three artists choose to abstract their chosen landscapes to create uniquely surreal images that at once connect us to and disconnect us from environments we might think we recognize. Upon a closer look, these works function to transport us into the inner worlds of these artists, and if we welcome it, allow us to escape into their beauty.

Exhibition is up through April 31st!

Posted • .phlo We are very pleased to announce our first in-person event, a book talk and signing with PhotoPhlo faculty members Sara Macel and Thomas Holton. The event, which is free and open to the public, is co-hosted with and on-location Launch Photo Books] in New York City, on Wednesday, January 25 at 7pm ET. Sara Macel] and will share insights into their photo books, What Did the Deep Sea Say and the Lams of Ludlow Street, respectively. A brief Q&A with PhotoPhlo founder .baum will be followed by a book signing. Link in Bio for more information and to RSVP.
About the Event:
When viewing family photos, the viewer might assume that the photographer is either an insider or an outsider - a family member or a more objective observer, such as a hired photographer. The photographer’s perspective is not so clear cut, however, in the work of artists Sara Macel and Thomas Holton, who each weave stories about families using photographs to reveal the complex ties that bind people together.
