The National Portrait Gallery in London has unveiled a portrait by Elizabeth Peyton of Dr. Nicholas Cullinan. Generously donated by the artist, the work was commissioned to mark Cullinan's tenure as director of the National Portrait Gallery (2015–2024) and is now on permanent display in Room 30, continuing the institution's longstanding tradition of representing its former directors.

Created from life during sittings in Paris and Nicholas Cullinan’s home London, the work embodies Peyton's distinctive approach to portraiture and marks the first painting by the artist to enter the National Portrait Gallery's permanent collection. Learn more: https://zwrnr.art/4wp1M0i

An exhibition of recent sculpture by Yosh*tomo Nara is now on view at Château La Coste in Aix-en-Provence, France. Plan your visit: https://zwrnr.art/4b2vb8b

This monumental group of large-scale sculptures vary in height from one meter to over two meters high. Cast in bronze in 2024, the six works are sculptural enlargements of Nara’s small but characterful, hand-molded, palm-sized clay heads.

Each bronze is coated with a bright, matte-white urethane, which evokes a sense of lightness and serenity. Arranged by the artist himself, the sculptures interact collectively on the lawned area outside of the art center. This considered positioning recalls that of ancient standing stones, with their timeless, sentient presence.

“As [Philip] Guston says, ‘the abstraction and the figuration work and intertwine’.... So this block of color-aid paper, which is pretty amazing, is something that I’ve had for 40-some years, kicking around my studio, and I’ve never really done anything with it until this body of work.” —Lisa Yuskavage

Prior to Yuskavage’s newest exhibition, on view through Friday, June 26 at our 19th Street gallery in Chelsea, we visited the artist in her Brooklyn studio to discuss the ways in which color, memory, and imagination converge in her most recent suite of paintings. The Obama Presidential Center unveiled the first official portrait of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama together, by Njideka Akunyili Crosby this weekend.

This landmark commission will be on view in the main lobby of the museum at the Obama Presidential Center, which opens in Chicago this coming Friday on Juneteenth. The portrait weaves together archival imagery, family albums, historical ephemera, and cultural touchstones. Densely layered and rich with biographical detail, the work honors the Obamas’ legacy while connecting it to the many generations of artists, activists, citizens, and leaders whose collective journeys helped pave their way to the White House.

This first dual portrait of the Obamas depicts them as both public figures and people with layered private lives. Using her signature photo-transfer technique, Akunyili Crosby incorporates images significant to the couple and those from our shared cultural memory. Rich detail situates the Obamas’ public lives within the personal histories that shaped them: a window frames the scene, its arches echoing the Oval Office, while the view centers Mrs. Obama’s childhood home, her father’s Buick parked out front.

Today, we celebrate the 127th birthday of Anni Albers, one of the most important abstract artists of the twentieth century, as well as an influential designer, printmaker, and educator.

For the first time in Austria, a major solo exhibition pays tribute to the artist’s varied practice in Anni Albers: Constructing Textiles, currently on view at the Belvedere Museum in Vienna. Featuring works from across her multifaceted career—from her early days at the Bauhaus through her influential work at Black Mountain College—the exhibition spans textiles, architecture, weaving, and more, past and present.

+ Recently published in May by Yale University Press, London, Anni Albers: A Life by Nicholas Fox Weber is the first major biography of the pioneering artist. Drawing from Weber’s lifetime of working closely with Josef and Anni Albers, the publication traces the complex life and influential art of Anni Albers through rare firsthand accounts.
