Duane Thomas Gallery is pleased to announce the representation of German artist Benedikt Gahl.
Based in Munich, Gahl’s practice encompasses painting, sculpture, publishing, and collaborative projects, exploring the intersections of abstraction, political consciousness, and the social conditions of artistic production. Rooted in the legacy of postwar German painting while remaining acutely responsive to the present, his work challenges conventional distinctions between formal experimentation and political engagement. Through layered compositions, recurring symbols, and material precision, Gahl proposes painting and sculpture as a space where history, memory, and contemporary experience remain in constant negotiation.
A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, where he studied with Markus Oehlen, Gahl has developed an interdisciplinary practice extending beyond the studio through artist-run initiatives, publishing, and curatorial projects. In 2025, his institutional solo exhibition Unbekannte (Unknown), curated by Angela Stiegler, was presented at Kunstraum München, examining artistic autonomy and the politics of visibility through painting, installation, and publishing.
Since presenting Gahl’s first New York solo exhibition, Lieder, Duane Thomas Gallery has worked closely with the artist to introduce his practice to American audiences through exhibitions and international art fairs. We look forward to continuing this collaboration with forthcoming exhibitions, publications, and institutional projects.
Welcome, Benedikt Gahl.

Duane Thomas Gallery Announces Representation of Cynthia Carlson
Duane Thomas Gallery is pleased to announce its representation of Cynthia Carlson.
For more than five decades, Carlson has developed one of the most singular and inventive bodies of work in American painting. Emerging in New York in the late 1960s, she established a visual language that dissolved the boundaries between abstraction and representation, painting and architecture, image and environment. Her exuberant forms—at once organic, ornamental, and psychological—have continuously challenged conventional notions of pictorial space.
A key figure in the development of the Pattern and Decoration movement, Carlson has remained steadfastly independent, pursuing a practice that resists categorization while expanding the possibilities of painting. Her work is distinguished by a distinctive visual vocabulary in which biomorphic forms, illusionistic space, and decorative motifs converge into compositions that are both playful and rigorously constructed. Throughout her career, Carlson has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to experimentation, moving fluidly between painting, drawing, printmaking, and immersive installations.
Carlson’s work has been exhibited extensively in museums and galleries throughout the United States and internationally. Her paintings are held in the permanent collections of major institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Smithsonian American Art Museum; and the Brooklyn Museum, among many others.
Duane Thomas Gallery has worked closely with Carlson over the past several years, presenting both historical and recent works through a series of exhibitions that have highlighted the remarkable breadth and continuity of her practice. The gallery looks forward to building on this collaboration by placing renewed emphasis on Carlson’s historical contributions while advancing her contemporary practice through exhibitions, publications, institutional partnerships, and international art fairs.

Duane Thomas Gallery is proud to announce the representation of the Estate of Shirley Pettibone.

Since first presenting Pettibone’s work at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2023, the gallery has remained deeply committed to introducing new audiences to one of the most distinctive and underrecognized voices of postwar American art. That commitment continued through three dedicated exhibitions at the gallery, tracing the breadth of her practice—from her pioneering conceptual works of the 1960s and early 1970s to later investigations of perception, landscape, and photo realism.
Working across painting, sculpture, printmaking, and conceptual art, Pettibone developed a singular visual language that resisted categorization while engaging many of the defining artistic questions of her generation. She exhibited alongside leading artists of the period and was included in Lucy Lippard’s landmark 1971 exhibition 26 Contemporary Women Artists.
Representing the Estate marks a natural continuation of the gallery’s ongoing stewardship of Pettibone’s legacy. Through future exhibitions, publications, and collaborations with museums and scholars, Duane Thomas Gallery is honored to help ensure that Shirley Pettibone’s remarkable contribution to American art receives the sustained attention it merits.

Duane Thomas Gallery Announces Representation of the Estate of Eunice Golden
We are pleased to announce the representation of the Estate of Eunice Golden (1927–2025).

Among the most original voices of postwar American art, Golden developed a practice that transformed the conventions of figurative painting. Beginning in the late 1960s, her groundbreaking depictions of the male n**e challenged centuries of art historical tradition by placing the male body at the center of female desire and artistic inquiry. Working across painting, drawing, printmaking, and performance over more than six decades, Golden explored themes of sexuality, power, vulnerability, spirituality, and the human condition with remarkable formal and intellectual rigor.

The gallery began working closely with Eunice Golden during her lifetime, presenting exhibitions that brought renewed attention to her extraordinary body of work. Following the artist’s passing in 2025, Duane Thomas Gallery is honored to continue that commitment through the representation of her estate, working closely with the Golden family to preserve and expand her legacy through exhibitions, publications, museum partnerships, and scholarly research.
