As described by the exhibition organizers, and .Kavanaugh, This major survey mirrors the creative and loving residents of the South Bronx whose personal stories and innovative aesthetics both reflect and shape culture internationally. PAMM's collection has expanded to include artwork by William Cole (), pictured here with "With a Heart of Gold". Purchased through the PAMM Fund for Black Art, the work was recently unveiled at our Art + Soul celebration. ⁣

Willie Cole is a contemporary American sculptor, printer, and conceptual and visual artist. His work combines references to African and African American imagery with broader traditions of assemblage art. His work has been the subject of several solo museum exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Bronx Museum of the Arts, Miami Art Museum, Tampa Museum of Art, University of Wyoming Art Museum, Montclair Art Museum, and College of Wooster Art Museum.⁣

“Rita McBride's Tapestries link the dual function of tapestry, insulation, and entertainment with contemporary electronic media in the domestic sphere. These tapestries depict TV test patterns, the analog method for adjusting a television's color and focus, as a surrogate for abstract decoration… ‘The destiny of the tapestry of today emerges: it becomes the mural of the modern age,’ Le Corbusier wrote in his essay ‘Tapestries: Nomadic Murals.’ Nomadic, because they could be easily removed from the walls and rolled up for travel and convenience. Tapestries act as decoration but maintain their autonomy from architecture. The decoration of the modern "machine for living" should be functional and flexible as well as durable. The warmth of hand-woven wool and its brightly colored shapes are the direct compliment to the sterility of ‘beton brut.’ In McBride's works these characteristics of the tapestry admired by Le Corbusier attain a new relevance in their additional function as a test pattern for the static and white noise of modernism.” - description from "Rita McBride: Public Works, 1988-2015" a field manual by Gina Ashcraft and .

’s “Tribute to LBJ” 1967, included in “Mad Women: Kornblee, Jackson, Saidenberg, and Ward, Art Dealers on Madison Avenue in the 1960s” on view at through October 22.

As William Corwin describes in his review in : “Curators Damon Brandt and Valentina Branchini are staking a claim in the pedigree of Madison Avenue itself as an incubator of revolutionary art of the sixties, and more importantly presenting women gallerists as dynamos of culture at that time…. Each of the four gallery founders is represented by seven to ten artists, so for a historical exhibition in a medium-sized commercial gallery, the depth is reasonable, and the sample set is circumspect, allowing the viewer to get a sense of what each gallerist represented: we can see their different approaches; what risks they took, and what aesthetic sensibilities they embraced…There is a lovely small Paul Thek lampooning the overt machismo of Lyndon B. Johnson, entitled “Tribute to LBJ” (1967); a lemon yellow triangle with three framed roundels displaying flaccid c***s festooned with dead flies.”

Repost from .art:

Utilizing an amateur and handmade approach to both photography and sculpture, Kinmont illustrates the human scale and its relationship to one’s surroundings. Incorporating both irony and humor his work explores the systems and structures that continue to develop within this relationship.

“Dalton Paula: Brazilian Portraits” opens today, July 29 . Curated by , and , the exhibition is on view through October 30, 2022.

As described in the press release: “The artistic production of Dalton Paula (Brasilia, 1982) stands out for transiting between painting, installation, photography, video, and objects, based on research that seeks to critically interpret historical events and the trajectory of Black population in Brazil, a country that currently has the second largest population of African origin individuals in the entire world, second only to Nigeria.

The paintings he has been making since 2018 present Black men and women who fought for freedom and justice over the centuries, historical personalities who had their image erased or underrepresented in the history of Brazil. With them, Dalton Paula confers dignity, visibility, and acknowledgment to these figures, a process that becomes even greater with the presence of such works in collections and the exhibition itself.
