✨An important Belgian Symbolist, Léon Frédéric drew on contemporary and earlier influences as well as his own personal spiritual views of life and nature to evolve a unique artistic style. The tenor of his work was formed largely by the Italian and Flemish art of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and the poetic paintings of the English Pre-Raphaelites. The present portrait was painted in the Ardennes in 1896. As is often the case in Frédéric’s compositions, social realism cloaks a strong orientation toward hidden symbolism bound to a Christian mysticism still present in the Belgian countryside during this period.

☠️ With Death and the Maiden Camillo Verno presents the viewer with a classic vanitas or momento mori portrait. Painted circa 1895, the young woman, quite possibly the artist’s wife and model, is embraced from behind by a leering skeleton, clearly symbolic of the shortness and fragility of human life and the inevitability of death.

The subject of Death and the Maiden was a common motif in Renaissance art and finds its roots in the Danse Macabre, an artistic genre of allegory of the Late Middle Ages on the universality of death. No matter one’s station in life, the Danse Macabre unites us all.

Camillo Verno, born near the Swiss border in northern Italy, studied at the Albertina Academy in Turin and made his artistic debut in the Societa Promotrice delle Belle Arti of 1891. Verno then competed at the Exposizioni Nazionali in Turin, Milan, Florence, and Rome as well as at the Internationali held in Munich, London, and Barcelona. Verno was a member of the Accademia Albertina, professor at the Neapolitan Institute of Fine Arts, a teacher at the Modena Academy, and Director of the Adolfo Venturi Institute of Art in Modena.

Georges Clairin’s portrait of Sarah Bernhardt, c. 1894, shows her in the role of Izeyl, an eastern religious melodrama which premiered in Paris in 1874. Famous for her exotic costumes, passionate death scenes, ice blue eyes, and what Victor Hugo called her “golden voice,” Bernhardt was one of the most notable performers of her day. She toured the world, including South America and the USA, when there were no movies and no recordings. Her performances were one of the highlights of popular entertainment.

Clairin and Bernhardt met in 1874. He was first her lover, then her closest confident for almost 50 years. In addition to acting, Bernhardt was interested in all aspects of contemporary culture and dabbled in mysticism and spiritualism. Over a 60-year career, she wrote plays and novels, designed dresses and costumes, was the director of a theatre and also a well-known sculptor. In short, she was the rock-star of her day.

✨Enjoy our most recent video with Jack Kilgore. Karl Mediz was a fascinating artist who worked in Germany and Austria in the late 19th and early 20th century. He participated in the first exhibition of the Munich Secession in 1893. Like many Symbolist artists of the period, Mediz turned from the representation of tangible reality toward the evocative suggestion of an interior life of emotion and spiritual content.

Painted in an almost pointillist manner, with dots of blue, green, and red paint, this sun-drench rocky beach - with no sand and just a narrow glimpse of sea - comes from the artist’s imagination. Within this unlikely setting, Mediz placed a mythological beast with webbed feet and pointed fins. The artist’s inscription on the reverse of the canvas conveniently identifies the creature as a wingless dragon – a “𝐿𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑤𝑢𝑟𝑚.”

🇳🇱| 🇬🇧 Today the work of Nico Jungmann, a Dutch / Anglo artist and illustrator, is little known but reviews of his monographic exhibitions in London in the early 1900s attracted much praise. The art critic, Alfred Lys Baldry referred to him as a genius in his 1902 review for the Magazine of Art. Jungmann’s noteworthy travel and topographical books such as Holland (1904), Norway (1905) and Normandy (1905) include illustrations featuring charming depictions of people, whose ethnicity and customs he had studied on his travels throughout these countries. In this sensitively rendered Mother and Child, Jungmann combines his knowledge of Italian and Spanish Old Master paintings with his exceptional skill as a draughtsman.

Jungmann was born in Amsterdam, studied at the Rijksakademie and was apprenticed to a mural painter at the age of 12. He moved to London in 1893 and eventually became a British citizen. During WWI, he was interned for 16 months in the Ruhleben civilian detention camp outside Berlin. In fact, many of the detainees were writers, musicians, actors and artists. Jungmann was allowed to work throughout his detainment, and his many paintings produced there provide a visual record of camp life.

✨AVAILABLE NOW Queen Victoria commissioned the Viennese born Swoboda to paint a series of portraits of Indian people and other British colonial subjects for the Colonial and Indian Exhibition of 1886. The Sovereign’s instructions to Swoboda were specific: ‘The Sketches Her Majesty wishes to have – are of the various types of the different nationalities. They should consist of heads of the same size as those already done for The Queen, and small full lengths, as well as sketches of landscapes, buildings, and other scenes.’ In exchange for the cost of passage and £300 to cover travel expenses, Swoboda was to provide Queen Victoria with sketches worth £300.

On October 7, 1886, Swoboda departed for India, on route passing through Afghanistan and Kashmir. His subjects were Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus with occupations ranging from military officers to snake charmers and jugglers. His paintings, like the present work depicting an Indian man drawing water for an irrigation system, are grounded in the day-to-day existence of the people he observed on his travels. Swoboda continued to work for Queen Victoria until 1892, and today over 70 portrait studies by the artist are in the Royal Collection at Osborne House, Isle of Wight, UK.

🏔 After the First World War, Felix Heuberger left Vienna to live in the Tyrol region of eastern Austria. Here he studied the Kalkkögel mountain range which forms part of the Stubai Alps. In his Alpine works, Heuberger developed a near photographic realism and meticulous technique ideal for capturing the hazy light effects of these high mountains. However, his paintings display a spiritual essence and ethereal glow that far surpass mere documentary photography. His compositions, devoid of human beings, convey nature as a vibrant, living presence.

Heuberger’s finest works radiate a remarkable, almost mystical stillness, placing him firmly in the Romantic tradition of 19th century masters such as Caspar David Friedrich. But the blurred photographic realism of 𝑮𝒆𝒃𝒊𝒓𝒈𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒆 also recalls the ‘out of focus’ Alpine compositions of the contemporary German artist, Gerhard Richter.
