The paintings may capture your attention, but the story behind them offers another layer entirely. If you haven’t done so already, take a moment to read our latest interview with Yooyeon Nam.

In this recent feature, the New York–based painter reflects on solitude and the subtle emotional tensions shaping our everyday lives. Through the expressive eyes of her subjects, she urges us to pause, rethink our assumptions, and notice the feelings we often overlook in others.

“My paintings reflect feelings of alienation, vulnerability, and uncertainty.”

“My paintings reflect feelings of alienation, vulnerability, and uncertainty.”

In our latest feature, New York–based painter Yooyeon Nam explores isolation and the emotional discomfort that quietly influences our everyday lives.

What you first notice about Yooyeon’s work is her subjects’ expressive eyes, which immediately draw you in and act as emotional windows into each figure’s inner world. Their gaze urges us to take a second look, to notice the assumptions we make, the glances we misread, and the feelings that often go unseen in others.

A testament to how much we carry, even when we don’t say a word.

“It’s like trying to find the beauty in ugliness, or the hope in uncertainty.”

Distorted figures and moments that feel slightly off, yet oddly familiar.
In our recent conversation with contemporary artist Benjamin McDonald, we explore how his muted palettes, layered structures, and ambiguous figures create a space where presence and distance quietly coexist. His work moves through themes of isolation and anxiety, drawing you into a world where emotion is carried through tone, texture, and the subtle tension held between forms. As you move through his work, the emotional undercurrents begin to surface in ways that are understated yet unmistakably felt, revealing the quiet complexity at the heart of his practice.

What does the afterlife look like?

In our latest interview, Los Angeles-based artist Priyanka Pulijal draws from the concept of the Lokas to explore what exists between the seen and the unseen. Her work considers the afterlife not as a single place, but as something more layered, shaped by perception, memory, and inner experience.

Rather than offering fixed interpretations, her work leaves space for ambiguity, allowing meaning to shift with each viewer and each encounter.

“There isn’t just one way to understand what lies beyond.”
