The Deals Go On | Half-Field Plan in New York: Solo Exhibition of Cai Guojie
Curated by Lam Sio Man.

Half-Field Plan(半田計畫) is an art project in which Cai examines cadastral maps inventively to develop conceptual land properties. Cai identifies the liminal spaces between the boundaries of properties, marks them on the cadastral map, and grants them to the public as a form of participatory art and social commentary. For this debut project in New York, Cai has developed 3 groups of “listings”' in New York, Chicago and Washington D.C.-- all carefully conceived in response to the current emergencies of American society - the systemic racism (Jamaica Estates), the unprecedented pandemic (Hotels Where Heroes Are Not Admitted) and the critical presidential election (White Tower).

Aita Sulser is a Swiss art advisor based in Taipei. She currently works with the Burger Collection Hong Kong to find international emerging artists. Previously, she served as artist liaison for Galerie Urs Meile in Beijing and Lucerne and managed their Artist-in-Residence program. Before moving to Asia, Aita worked as artistic director on editorial campaigns and as art strategist for brands and design studios in Zurich.

Previously Tsai worked alongside collector Qiao Zhibing on launching TANK SHANGHAI, which will open in March 2019 as well as managing independent project space Qiao Space in Shanghai. She formerly worked at Modern Media Group, where she was involved in marketing initiatives for several of the company’s publications, including LEAP and The Art Newspaper China. Tsai has been collaborating with Hauser & Wirth in various capacities since 2015, including on the realisation of projects with artists Martin Creed and Wilhelm Sasnal at Qiao Space in Shanghai.

[Day 1 of Lunar New Year - the Year of Pig] reflections of Léon and Mathilde, with Damien Zhang

Before the Chinese New Year, I happened to see the movie Four Springs and to read the book Qin Se Ensemble, written jointly by Gong Jimin and Fang Rennian, a Chinese couple - both writers - residing in the United States since the 80s. Moving images and writings are reflections of the independent yet dialoguing spiritual worlds of the two featuring loving couples. Never had I seen the happiness of an old couple so lovingly depicted. To replace a beautiful phrase I cited from the book Qin Se Ensemble which I’m unable to translate into English, here is a scene depicted by Michel Houellebecq in his book Submission:

"Andre and Jeanne soon felt nothing but blessed tenderness, maternal satisfaction, at sharing the same bed, at simply lying close together and talking before they turned back to back and went to sleep."

This is the year of dog. A Tesla Roadster was recently launched into the space. Russian cosmism is the trending discourse.
Sixty years ago, a stray dog was delivered into the space by the Soviet Union. Laika, the puppy, survived merely for a few hours after taking off from earth, presumably tortured by extremely hot temperature and the rapidly changing air pressure prior to its death. A personal anecdote here is, the year of dog might just have its plate full, as the past is inserting itself invasively into the future, while the future resurrects the past.

Yang Beichen, is a researcher, writer, and university lecturer.
