Blanche Lazzell: Becoming an American Modernist is now open at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, MA. This exhibition explores the artist’s lifelong pursuit of translating modernism into an American art form and celebrates her largely unsung achievements in championing abstraction in the United States through painting and printmaking.

Lazzell’s work helped define the group known as the Provincetown Printers; she also made important contributions to Cubism and abstract art. Mary Ryan Gallery has been a pioneer in exhibiting prints by these Provincetown artists as well as in selling their artwork to museums and private collectors.

The exhibition at is on view through January 4, 2026.

Joan Mitchell is known for her gestural style, and for being a profound contributor to the Abstract Expressionist period in the US.

In Trees III, Mitchell translates nature into an emotion-laden abstraction that is highly expressive and spontaneous. At 57 1/4 x 82 inches, it is one of Mitchell’s largest prints, and the remarkable care and precision she poured into this series make them amongst the most vigorous works of her career.

In Gold Barbra, Deborah Kass reinterprets Andy Warhol’s œuvre, depicting glamorous singer Barbra Streisand in the same graphic, vibrant light as Warhol did his subjects.

Baltimore Museum of Art Curator Cecilia Wichmann writes, “In 1992, Deborah Kass ran a glossy film still through the only large Xerox machine in New York’s East Village. She had found the photo in a Hollywood memorabilia shop on 14th Street: a bootleg image of Barbra Streisand as F***y Brice in the 1968 hit Funny Girl, snapped from TV by some enterprising fan who had captured Streisand perfectly in profile. As Kass photocopied the image repeatedly, creating a grid, she realized she was having a conversation about one of her favorite stars with one of her favorite artists.”

During the Great Depression, James Allen returned to New York from Paris, working consistently in the field of commercial art. His etchings and lithographs began to receive widespread academic and critical acclaim. This print, Brazilian Builders, won the Charles M. Lea Award at the Philadelphia Print Club Exhibition, and was the cover illustration for the Herald Tribune Magazine on October 15, 1933.

Set in Cape Cod, Michael Mazur’s Wakeby Day/Wakeby Night body of work is a remarkable study of landscape and memory.

Characterized by painterly drips, studies of water, oversized flowers in the foreground and “ghosts” of past prints and monotypes, Mazur’s depictions of the Wakeby pond correspond to a dynamic and mysterious vision of a landscape that is in constant flux. This effect is heightened by Mazur’s manipulation of the monotype medium, which allowed for a visual record of his creative evolution.
