Carol Bove will be honored, along with fellow artist Kelly Akashi and the late philanthropist Mandy Einstein, for their extraordinary talents and contributions to the arts at the Twelfth Distinguished Women in the Arts Luncheon today, January 11, at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

Established in 1994 by the Projects Council of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the event recognizes the many gifted women providing leadership and innovation in the visual arts, dance, music, and literature.

"The Echo of Picasso," a group exhibition focused on Pablo Picasso's influence on twentieth-century art, is on view at the Museo Picasso Málaga in Spain.

Organized as part of Picasso Celebration 1973–2023, a series of international exhibitions and events commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Pablo Picasso’s death, the exhibition places his practice in dialogue with work by more than fifty artists, including Francis Bacon, Georg Baselitz, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Willem de Kooning, Thomas Houseago, Ewa Juszkiewicz, Richard Prince, Nathaniel Mary Quinn, Cy Twombly, Tom Wesselmann, and Franz West. "Abstract Explorations: 100 Years on Paper," an exhibition of modern and contemporary works on paper, is now on view at Gagosian, Gstaad. With artworks in various mediums and scales, the exhibition highlights visual and conceptual correspondences within a range of painting and drawing practices specific to working on paper.

The development of abstraction in the first decades of the twentieth century was one of modernism’s most radical breaks with convention, birthing entirely new modes of art making. "Sea and Space," an exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by Mary Weatherford, opens on January 18 at Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue, New York.

Weatherford’s work is rooted in her experience and observation of urban and rural environments, which she employs as prompts to investigate the properties of light, color, and gesture. Often drawing inspiration from the kinds of commonplace and organic materials identified with Arte Povera, she has also studied American abstract painters of the 1950s and 1960s such as Helen Frankenthaler and Kenneth Noland. An exhibition of Stanley Whitney's painting "Dear Paris" opens tomorrow, January 10, at Gagosian, rue de Castiglione, Paris.

Inspired by the artist’s extended stay in the French capital, "Dear Paris" is the latest of Whitney’s lyrical abstractions. Whitney forms each shape with energetic brushwork, choosing its vivid hues and shaping its boundaries in relation to its predecessors. The painting’s subtly shifting freehand geometry is further demarcated by linear bands between its rows that both divide and unify the composition. Alexandria Smith’s debut solo exhibition in Asia, “Stirrings of a Polymorphous Bloom,” closes this Saturday, January 13, at Gagosian, Hong Kong.

The works on view envision cosmic environments inhabited by figures in flux. Smith’s practice is grounded in her exploratory drawings, represented in Hong Kong by works on paper housed in custom frames. From these, she develops boldly colored assemblage paintings that incorporate shapes made from painted wood and 3D-printed elements that rise from their surfaces and extend beyond their frames. The first solo presentation of Jordan Wolfson's work in Australia, titled "Body Sculpture," is now on view at the National Gallery of Australia.

Gagosian's exhibition of Stanley Whitney’s painting "Dear Paris" opens at the gallery at rue de Castiglione in Paris on Wednesday, January 10. Inspired by the artist’s extended stay in the French capital, "Dear Paris" is the latest of Whitney’s lyrical abstractions.

Pursuing abstraction since the 1970s, Whitney established his mature style in the 1990s while living and working in Rome. The compositional framework he employs allows him the freedom to improvise, facilitating the emergence of surprising chromatic harmonies and dynamic visual rhythms. The artist’s wide-ranging influences include the polyphonic call and response of jazz, the transformative effect of light cast on historic buildings, the traditions of American quiltmaking, and artists from Henri Matisse and Piet Mondrian to Giorgio Morandi. "Full Moon," an exhibition featuring Nan Goldin’s video "Sirens" and large-scale photographs, is on view at Gagosian, Basel, through January 27.

The nine color photographs on view in Basel alongside "Sirens" were taken between 1979 and 2021. In the first room are photographs that pay homage to the sensuality of the female body. These intimate depictions allow the viewer to observe the works’ subjects without the women gazing back, questioning whether we can experience any subject without an element of confrontation. A two-person exhibition of new paintings by Hilary Pecis and Lily Stockman, titled "Nostos," is on view at Gagosian, Athens, through January 27.

Loosely inspired by Emily Wilson’s 2018 translation of the "Odyssey" in iambic pentameter, the exhibition is in part a meditation on the idea of returning home. Just as Wilson’s lyrical translation remains embossed with Homer’s sensibility, the hands of Pecis and Stockman are evident in their works, while "Nostos" makes use of both the rich historical and literary context of Athens and the intimate neoclassical space of the gallery. Cy Gavin's debut solo exhibition in Italy, titled "New Paintings," is currently on view at Gagosian, Rome. Made in Rome and New York from April through October of 2023, these paintings visualize forces of growth, decay, and resilience.

"Untitled (Roadside with chicory and wild carrot)" juxtaposes a profusion of vigorous roadside weeds in white, yellow, orange, and green with the monotone of the blacktop road in its lower register. "Untitled (Pollarded white mulberry tree)," another painting that contrasts the built environment with the vitality of the natural world, represents a street tree in blues and pinks, its branches cut back to shape its growth and its roots constrained by a rectangular cutout in the sidewalk. "The Painter in His Bed," an exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by Georg Baselitz, closes this Friday, December 22, at Gagosian, 555 West 24th Street, New York.

Over the past six decades, Baselitz has pursued a form of figuration that is direct, provocative, and informed by the history of art. A pioneer of Neo-Expressionism, he began in 1969 to invert his images as a means to focus on the painting process and to slow down the viewer’s perception and comprehension of his works. Often incorporating references to his own previous paintings, Baselitz harnesses uninhibited gestures to create emotionally charged compositions that remain centered on the human form. "Impronte di luce / Empreintes de lumière," an exhibition of an entirely new body of paintings by Giuseppe Penone, closes tomorrow, December 22, at Gagosian, rue de Ponthieu, Paris.

Inspired by Penone’s experience of Le Corbusier’s Couvent Sainte-Marie de La Tourette in Éveux, France, these canvases are on view alongside imprints used in their production; an artist’s book, "Le Bois Sacré du Couvent de La Tourette" (2022), which collects rubbings made from the building’s wood-grained concrete walls; and other graphic and sculptural works. "30 Ghosts," an exhibition of ten new paintings by Louise Bonnet, closes at Gagosian, 541 West 24th Street, New York, on Friday, December 22. This is the Los Angeles–based artist’s first exhibition with the gallery in New York since "The Hours" at Park & 75 in 2020.

“Behind every man now alive stand thirty ghosts, for that is the ratio by which the dead outnumber the living.” Bonnet cites the opening lines of Arthur C. "Let the painting make you," an exhibition of new paintings and drawings by Brice Marden, closes this Friday, December 22, at Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue in New York.

The exhibition features a group of large paintings that Marden made in his studio in Tivoli, New York, in 2023, along with sixteen recent drawings that he made on the Caribbean island of Nevis and in Marrakech, Morocco. The paintings are characterized by weblike linear networks that cover variously colored grounds, and the group has a raw, spontaneous look, showing Marden drawing on intuition honed over a lifetime. “In a Shady Valley, Near a Running Water,” an exhibition of new paintings by Ewa Juszkiewicz, closes on Friday, December 22, at Gagosian, Beverly Hills.

Juszkiewicz’s oil paintings of women begin with historical portraits, appropriating their style while subverting their conventions through fantastical and discomforting pictorial interventions.
