The re-opening of the Costume Institute!

We are pleased to announce that the inaugural exhibition of the newly renovated Costume Institute will examine the career of the legendary couturier Charles James. “Charles James: Beyond Fashion,” on view from May 8 through August 10, 2014, will explore James’ design process focusing on his use of sculptural, scientific, and mathematical approaches to construct revolutionary ball gowns and innovative tailoring that continue to influence designers today. http://met.org/1cFLPW8

的灵魂是钢琴
"The soul is the piano."
-Wassily Kandinski

While western philosophy tends to think of human existence as an ever-upward movement of progress, eastern philosophy prefers the idea of a never-ending cycle.

This piece, my first attempt at abstraction, seeks to represent the idea of a cycle through music (specifically Vivaldi's Four Seasons, a cyclic theme in itself).

The title and inspiration for the piece come from Wassily Kandinsky, well known for his abstract depictions of music.

“When I say be creative, I don’t mean that you should all go and become great painters and great poets. I simply mean let your life be a painting, let your life be a poem.”

German Expressionism 1900-1930: Masterpieces from the Neue Galerie Collection | www.neuegalerie.org

This German Expressionism exhibit is only open until April 22, I highly recommend it if you're looking for Sunday plans!

The Neue Galerie presents important works of German Expressionism from its permanent collection. The exhibition examines themes of primitivism and modernity, two poles of Expressionism that artists employed to free themselves from the academic conventions of the nineteenth century.

Leda and the Swan
Acrylic
18"x24"

I thought I would share my creative process, as I think it adds dimension to the piece. So, I start out with a concept - this one is based off the story of Leda and the Swan from mythology. I translated it into female empowerment juxtaposed to the power a man can have over a woman. I then write down a list of inspirations/adjectives/moods I would like to convey. I'll share that with you here:

cubism
Picasso

Picasso's apartment
France
chateau
swan
Italian garden
abstract
African masks
Versailles

orange
imperfect
confusion

I hope this was insightful and I hope you enjoy the painting!

Myanmar
Stencil (hand-drawn) and Burmese newspaper collage

A piece inspired by my recent trip to Asia, dealing with the culture shocks, sensory overload, and very real problems of the developing world that as westerners aren't quite within our grasp of reality.
