For our project with Frank Miller, the artist sought to immerse himself in the atmosphere of the workshop and wanted to create large prints reminiscent of 19th-century movie posters. We used the largest and one of the oldest presses still running today in Europe.
The Marinoni “Double Grand Monde” nicknamed “Moby Dick” by David Lynch is considered the “Rolls Royce Phantom” of the printing press for the intense depth of its black color, as described by Patrice Forest, director of Idem. Atelier Idem had to restore the machine before the artist’s venue as the constraints associated with a machine large at about 30 feet and that ancient (built-in 1892 or 1893) needs a lot of TLC!
Powered by a gas steam boiler, it is driven by pulleys and belts and requires 8 printmakers to operate simultaneously. Frank Miller kept saying watching the team that operating such a giant was like “watching dancers performing a highly complicated synchronized ballet”.

François Avril’s (@francois_avril) segment on TV5Monde highlighting his solo exhibition “Vertical Silence,” his first presentation with the gallery as well as his debut showcase in the United States. The artist seeks to push the boundaries between graphic novels, comic illustration, and fine art through a marriage of the clear line popularized by Hergé with a rejuvenating twist.
“Vertical Silence” is on view through May 27. Follow the link in our bio for more information.
“Crepax,” the exhibition for late Italian artist Guido Crepax is now on view through April 15 at our gallery located on 534 West 24th Street.
The drawings and illustrations on view were made half a century ago almost exclusively with black chinese ink. The original boards have been preserved by the estate and this is their first gallery exhibition in the United States in seven years. Crepax developed a scratchy, lighter style over time to shape the contorted figures of Valentina and her peers—his seductive character design complemented by a fluid transition between genres allowed him to widen the scope of his tales, taking his heroines on fantastical erotic adventures which explore their carnal urges and hidden desires. Follow the link in our bio to browse available works and plan your visit.

The Cotton Club, 1930’s. Jack Johnson is getting ready to welcome Duke Ellington! The jazzy notes are flying across the screen, while we are moving towards the internationally renowned stage. This vignette is part of “Queenie”, a dazzling graphic novel set in the prohibition years when booze money is about to dry out. Reminiscent of comics from the golden age, the vignette sometime look like Bauhaus posters. The style is modern and, at the same time, preserves a vintage dimension. “Queenie” brings the Harlem of the 20s and 30s back to life!

We are pleased to announce our upcoming show « 3 Continents », an exhibition showcasing the works of three international artists, who bear witness to their culture through their storytelling with drawings.
Elizabeth Colomba, Catherine Meurisse and Rutu Modan combine the elegance of the line, the strength of the words, and the singularity of their personality to inscribe their works in the great library of the memory of humanity that the graphic novel occupies today.
« 3 Continents » will be on view from March 3rd – April 16, 2022.

Georges Bess: Tale of Unrealism
Thursday September 9th - October 5th, 2021
Philippe Labaune Gallery is pleased to present Tale of Unrealism- an exhibition featuring a selection of large-scale drawings and illustrations by French artist Georges Bess. This is the first time the artist will be exhibiting in the United States. Bess, an illustrator of comics and graphic novels, is recognized as a master of line and ink and for his collaborations with renowned Chilean-French artist Alejandro Jodorowsky. In recent works, Bess breaks away from the parameters of the book, creating ornate worlds originating from a single page that he expands upon intuitively, in a trance-like state of drawing. Also on view will be a collection of original comic strips from Bram Stoker Dracula (2018) and his 1989 graphic novel Le Lama Blanc (The White Lama). Tale of Unrealism will be on view September 9 – October 5, 2021, with an opening reception on Thursday, September 9, 11 AM to 9 PM.
