Fountain House Gallery

Fountain House Gallery More than a gallery. A movement. In 2014, the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize.

Fountain House Gallery and Studio provides an environment in which artists living with mental illness can express their creative visions and exhibit their work. Founded by Fountain House in 2000 as a not-for-profit exhibition space for its member-artists living and working with mental illness, the Gallery sells original artworks and collaborates with a wide network of artists, curators and cultura

l institutions. Embracing artists who are emerging or established, trained or self-taught, Fountain House Gallery cultivates artistic growth, makes a vital contribution to the New York arts community, and challenges the stigma surrounding mental illness. All Fountain House Gallery artists are members of Fountain House, founded in New York City in 1948 with the belief that people living with mental illness can be active participants in their own and each other’s recovery. Every day, hundreds of members come to Fountain House to contribute their talents, learn new skills, access opportunities and forge friendships. Over the past seven decades, Fountain House has inspired the creation of hundreds of similar programs in 32 states and 34 countries that serve more than 100,000 people annually. Hilton Foundation recognized Fountain House’s global reach and the efficacy of its evidence-based model with the prestigious Conrad N. Fountain House Studio is a dedicated studio space in Long Island City that provides member-artists with the resources, training, inspiration, and support they need to succeed in the highly competitive art world. Full-time access to the studio, where free art supplies are available, assists these artists in moving to a new level of creativity, expanding their marketable portfolios, and advancing their efforts to achieve broader name recognition and commercial success. At Fountain House Studio, artists living with mental illness work side by side with others in a collaborative setting that reduces isolation and fosters a supportive community. Located in the Silks Building, one of the pre-eminent landmarks in Long Island City, the Studio offers individual workspaces to Fountain House Gallery artists on a rotating basis. The space is available to the larger Fountain House community during designated drop-in hours. The establishment of Fountain House Studio has been made possible primarily through the generous support of individual donors.

Thomas Schneider

"I have always been fascinated by how individuals perceive art. When someone views a piece, it should captivate them and invite them into the scene unfolding before their eyes.

My sculptural paintings are intentionally designed to integrate the floor space, sometimes referred to as the viewer's space—into the artwork itself. By doing so, I aim to immerse the viewer in the physical presence, form, and spatial experience of the piece. This approach blurs the boundaries between the art and its environment, encouraging deeper interaction and engagement with the work."

Minnesota-born Tom has had extensive art training, beginning with private lessons in his early teens. He holds an MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute and an MBA from Pace University. Tom's preferred medium is oil on canvas, and in his work he often depicts real-life issues that may be difficult to face.

Angela is a practitioner of butoh, an avant-garde dance and ritual that emerged from Japan in the 1950s. In March of 2024, Angela was using an IV [intravenous drip] stand during a hospital stay. “After walking around with an IV stand in the hospital, I realized they wheel very easily...I wanted a headless sculpture with which I could dance. From the start, I knew it was going to be a large-scale sculptural work....”

The portability of the IV pole lends itself to butoh’s improvisational movements, allowing Spirit to be a visually impressive collaborator.

⏩️ Swipe to see the making of a Spirit ✨

Spirit is one of Angela’s “Poppets” — a creature that protects and brings good luck. Her Poppets start out as an inanimate piece of wire, and as the shape develops and coils, the poppet begins to build energy and its identity. Angela’s Poppets can be as big or as small as the “bones” around which they’re coiled; Spirit’s size is enabled by the IV pole around which her body is wrapped.

Here, you can see Angela working with Studio Director Karen Gormandy on the early evolution of Spirit.

Join us this week to experience the final result.

She’s ready for her close-up ✨

Detail images of Spirit, a character in Angela Rogers’ () menagerie of magical beings. She is a six-foot tall glamorous wraith held together by benevolent spells. Spirit is one of Angela’s “Poppets” — a creature that protects and brings good luck. We look forward to introducing you to Spirit and her companions at this week in Booth A4.

Nancy Caton

Our current show, Encased, is curated by Fountain House Gallery artist Nancy Caton, who conceived the show’s theme, and by New York-based artist Faiyaz Jafri.

Two works of Nancy's are featured in Encased - "Banded Geometric Order" and "Compartmentalized Creativity."

"In 'Banded Geometric Order,' elastic replaces drawn line, expanding my geometric language into physical tension. The entire surface is encased, bound into a disciplined geometric system. Structure remains precise yet visibly compressed. Containment here is both a formal strategy and a sustained pressure."

"In 'Compartmentalized Creativity,' three individual canvases are deliberately grouped and secured into a single unit. Elastic functions as both connector and restraint, formalizing compartmentalization as method — a controlled act of classification through enforced proximity."

Nancy has been a resident of New York City for more than three decades. Her artwork is greatly influenced by her study of physics and mathematics. She works primarily with drafting tools, creating mathematical expressions inspired by geometry. Her work articulates the endless natural geometric structures of reality and highlights their unfolding beauty. Prior to her foray into creating art, she had an extensive career in the fashion industry including owning her own company, Nancy Whiskey & The Sewing Factory, a high-end atelier, for seven years. She is considered by industry leaders to be an expert in the craft of garment manufacturing. Nancy brings with her an immense knowledge of all technical aspects of the production process with an unparalleled attention to detail and an appreciation for a well-executed product. Nancy’s professional background is complemented by a philosophy degree from Hunter College.
