"Imagine making a painting, and these columns can look like abstract paintings at times; but instead of applying color, you have to grow the colors you want to paint with. That’s what we’re doing. We’re working with living organisms that happen to be the colors of a vivid abstract artwork." —Anicka Yi, in Bomb Magazine
Anicka Yi's "Message from the Mud" contains observable communities of microorganisms, inviting visitors to view a part of the natrual world that is often hidden. In the work, acrylic columns rise from a shallow pool at the center of an excavated site to reveal a diverse arrays of algae, cyanobacteria, and microbial colonies in layers of vibrant colors reminiscent of abstract paintings.
"Message from the Mud" is on view through November 9.
