We’re working with living organisms that happen to be the colors of a vivid abstract artwork." —Anicka Yi, in Bomb Magazine

Anicka Yi's "Message from the Mud" contains observable communities of microorganisms, inviting visitors to view a part of the natrual world that is often hidden. In the work, acrylic columns rise from a shallow pool at the center of an excavated site to reveal a diverse arrays of algae, cyanobacteria, and microbial colonies in layers of vibrant colors reminiscent of abstract paintings.

"Message from the Mud" is on view through November 9.

Art and nature go hand in hand at Storm King, and on September 19 you can spend some time hiking through the fields, forest, and sculptures of Storm King on a Fungi Tour. Go search of mushrooms with experts from the New York Mycological Society (New York Mycological Society).

A ballroom often evokes visions of grand and opulent rooms, and not typically ruins in a field.

Liz Glynn is an artist who uses sculpture and performance to explore the social and cultural history of objects. Her work "Open House" is drawn from historic photos of a New York City mansion—Glynn reconstructed the couches, footstools, armchairs, and arched window forms of Louis XIV-style furniture from an opulent Gilded Age ballroom. She asks viewers to consider the continued resonance of the iconography of the ballroom today, “At the time this work was conceived, New York City had reached heights of income inequality not seen since the Gilded Age. . . . This piece is not just harkening back to the past; it is very much about the present.”

Artist Saif Azzuz often uses reclaimed and found materials in his practice. He intentionally reuses materials to reduce his footprint, but Azzuz is also interested in the life the material had prior, and the stories that brings to the artwork.

With "weych-pues / tàkhòne (where the rivers meet)" the matierals are one of the ways the artist connects the Hudson and Klammath rivers, and their regions. The metal is comprised of car hoods from the Hudson Valley, scrap metal that was already onsite at Storm King, as well as mild steel that was sourced locally. Inside the sturgeon is abalone from Northern California, from the reservation where the artist's mother and family live, and walnut from trees that were removed in the Bay Area of Northern California.

Hello to Shandaken Resident Jennifer Harley!

Jennifer Harley is an artist and art historian. As a sculptor, she creates ceramics that respond to the historical archives that are at the center of her research on the creative practices of Black artists in North America and the Caribbean. The archives she works with include botanical, geological, archeological, and art historical archives housed in art museums, natural history museums, plantations, and botanical gardens. Jennifer’s ceramics mirror her physical and intellectual process of conducting research in these archives. Her sculptures question the boundaries, biases, unethical holdings, and gaps in the archives she studies.

"Open House" by artist Liz Glynn is installed at Storm King as part of our 2026 special exhibitions. The work is interactive, inviting people to take a seat on the concrete furniture. Inspired by the work, we decided to take a tour of all the other artworks at you can sit, swing, and lay on.
