THE ROLL OF HONOR: PRESERVING AND SHARING THE STORIES OF PURPLE HEART RECIPEINTS WITH YOUR HELP.
If you are or know a Purple Heart recipient, help us to preserve their history and commemorate their sacrifices by enrolling in the Roll of Honor database.

WHAT IS THE ROLL OF HONOR?
The Roll of Honor is a database of Purple Heart recipients created and managed exclusively by the Hall of Honor as there is no comprehensive list of Purple Heart recipients in existence. The goal is to develop as comprehensive a list as possible, but we need your help to enroll recipients as we continue to build that database. Recipients, their families or even friends can enroll someone in the Roll of Honor.

HOW CAN A RECIPIENT BE ENROLLED?
You can download an enrollment form from our website enrollment link: (https://www.thepurpleheart.com/enrollment/ ). Or if you prefer, you can call us at 845-561-1765 and we can mail you the enrollment form. Once you have the form, you can fill it out and include official documentation verification that the award was made and return it to the Hall of Honor. We will send an acknowledgment letter to let you know when the enrollment has been completed. If you have any questions about the process, please give us a call at 845-561-1765.

Memorial Day (Traditional)
The origins of Memorial Day go back to the Civil War era. After the War ended, there were local observances to decorate the graves of those who had fallen during the conflict. In 1868, John A. Logan, Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, called for a day to recognize all those who fell in defense of the Nation.
Today, we commemorate all who have died in service to our nation. The poem below pays homage to the origin of this observance and is as relevant today as it was 160 years ago.

IRAN-IRAQ WAR: 39 YEARS AGO TODAY 17 May 1987

USS Stark (FFG 31) Incident

The guided missile frigate USS Stark (FFG 31) was in international waters in the Persian Gulf during the latter stages of the Iran-Iraq War. The U.S. was supporting Iraq with war material during the conflict and saw Iraq as an ally. At approximately 9:00 p.m. local time, Stark was hit by two Exocet missiles fired by an Iraqi fighter aircraft. The resulting damage took the lives of 37 crew members of the ship including Electronics Technician Second Class Christopher DeAngelis. Petty Officer DeAngelis is a featured recipient in our Ultimate Sacrifice Gallery at the Hall of Honor.

ARMED FORCES DAY: 16 MAY 2026:
76 years ago today, Armed Forces Day was first celebrated by order of President Truman, honoring all those in military service. The following two quotes speak to the importance of this day.

"Our Servicemen and women are serving throughout the world as guardians of peace--many of them away from their homes, their friends and their families. They are visible evidence of our determination to meet any threat to the peace with measured strength and high resolve. They are also evidence of a harsh but inescapable truth--that the survival of freedom requires great cost and commitment, and great personal sacrifice."

President John F. Kennedy, 1963

"The heritage of freedom must be guarded as carefully in peace as it was in war. Faith, not suspicion, must be the key to our relationships. Sacrifice, not selfishness, must be the eternal price of liberty. Vigilance, not appeasement, is the byword of living freedoms..."

General Omar N. Bradley
Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

KOREA: 73 YEARS AGO TODAY 8 May 1953

Corporal Kensei Ogata, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, U.S. Army

Cpl. Ogata spent eight days under constant combat before being wounded. He was in a bunker on the radio telephone when an enemy tank shell exploded in his bunker causing severe damage to the right side of his face. “My son was right on saying that, I’m still riding the wave…I am still so proud to be a soldier this part of me will never change or will I ever forget.”

KOREAN WAR: 75 YEARS AGO TODAY: 24 APRIL 1951 Wounded In Action

Corporal Hiroshi H. Miyamura- H Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. U.S. Army -Korean War

On the night of 24 April 1951, Cpl. Miyamura’s company was occupying a defensive position when the enemy attacked threatening to overrun the position. He was awarded the Medal of Honor and the Purple Heart for the events of that night. After his defiant stand he was made a prisoner and remained in a North Korean POW camp for more than two years. His Medal of Honor citation tells of the events that led to his wounding:
“…Cpl. Miyamura, a machine gun squad leader, aware of the imminent danger to his men unhesitatingly jumped from his shelter wielding his bayonet in close hand-to-hand combat killing approximately 10 of the enemy. Returning to his position, he administered first aid to the wounded and directed their evacuation. As another savage assault hit the line, he manned his machinegun and delivered withering fire until his ammunition was expended. He ordered the squad to withdraw while he stayed behind to render the gun inoperative. He then bayoneted his way through infiltrated enemy soldiers to a second gun emplacement and assisted in its operation. When the intensity of the attack necessitated the withdrawal of the company Cpl. Miyamura ordered his men to fall back while he remained to cover their movement. He killed more than 50 of the enemy before his ammunition was depleted and he was severely wounded. He maintained his magnificent stand despite his painful wounds, continuing to repel the attack until his position was overrun. When last seen he was fighting ferociously against an overwhelming number of enemy soldiers…”

Hiroshi Miyamura is a featured recipient in the Hall of Honor galleries.
