Eddy County Museum

The Eddy County Museum is a beautiful three-building complex and grounds, including the Schoolhouse, Church, and Train Depot buildings.

Each is filled with historic furnishings and exhibits highlighting our region's past. Museum Hours: Every Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Docents are on-site during Museum hours for tours. Entry to the Museum and tours are free of charge. The Eddy County Museum is managed by the Eddy County Historical Society.

Shirley Jones was born on July 9, 1922 in New Rockford, N.D., the youngest of four children to Enoch "Ed" and Elizabeth Jones. Shirley married Alfred Kreps on Sept. 25, 1943. They had one child, Nancy. Shirley worked many years for the State of Idaho at the Department of Employment, Alcohol Safety Action Project, and Department of Motor Vehicles.
Shirley passed away on March 27, 2009 from pulmonary fibrosis in Boise, Idaho at the age of 86.

James Franklin Johnson, known as ""Legion Jim', was born November 25, 1920, at New Rockford, ND, the son of William F. and Sarah (Weeks) Johnson. He grew up and graduated from New Rockford High School. He later worked for Swift & Co. On March 12, 1940, he was united in marriage to Patricia Bass in New Rockford. Their children are William, Jim, Janice, Patricia and Peggy. Three children were born prior to his entry into the US Army on June 26, 1944. He served in Germany, was wounded twice, and spent over a year in hospitals. He received a Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf Cluster, and was discharged on January 15, 1946. Legion Jim worked as the New Rockford American Legion Club manager for 54 years. He measured grain bins and fields for the ASCS office for many years. He was a substitute rural mail carrier for 30+ years prior to delivering full time. Jim was the Eddy County Selective Service Clerk of the local draft board from it's beginning until 1975. He also sold Christmas trees every winter from 1965 until 1994. Jim was an avid baseball player, and was inducted into both the Jr. Legion Hall of Fame and the Amateur Hall of Fame. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Raymond B. Thorn American Legion Post #30, and the Eagles, all of New Rockford, and the Sheyenne VFW Post #3696. He was an avid bowler, a hunter and outdoorsman. James passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2006, at Innovis Health in Fargo, ND, at the age of 85.

Geraldine Mae Huhnke was born October 28, 1920 to Alfred J. and Theresa Huhnke. Known as a master teacher, Geraldine taught in public schools for 7 years and for 38 years at Southern Nazarene University (formerly Bethany Nazarene College) in Modern Languages and Humanities. Teaching preschool children in churches was her avocation. She received numerous awards including: World Who's Who of Women, Directory of American Scholars, Outstanding Educators of America, Who's Who in Education, the honorary LLD Degree from SNU upon her retirement. Honor society memberships included: Alpha Lambda Delta, Alpha Mu Gamma, Sigma Delta Pi, Delta Phi Alpha, and Phi Delta Lambda. She was a life-long active member of the Church of the Nazarene and a devoted Christian.
Geraldine passed away at Garden Ranch Senior Care in Colorado Springs, CO on September 19, 2006, after a lengthy illness at the age of 85.

Martin Howard Hoveskeland was born on April 11, 1921, in Hamar, North Dakota to Sivert O. Hoveskeland and Anna Marie Thorson. He married Betty Joramo. They had 2 sons, Randy and Brian and 3 daughters, Vicki, Lori and Julie. He worked for Manhattan Furniture in Tulsa, Oklahoma until his retirement in 1986. He passed away on April 14, 2006, in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 85.

Margret Bernadine Hogan was born on September 24, 1918, in Duluth, Minnesota to John Thomas Hogan and Beulah Gertrude Burnett. She married Edward Fandrich on December 27, 1944, in New Rockford, North Dakota. They were the parents of Janet, Fay, Dennis, Gail, Cletus and Marvin. Margret passed away on May 29, 2001, in Carrington, North Dakota, at the age of 82, and was buried in Carrington, North Dakota.

Glenn Palmer Hermanson was born on April 16, 1920, in Eddy County, North Dakota to Amund Hermanson and Bertha Julia Borgerson. He served as a Corporal in the US Army Air Force. He married Lila Ruth Anderson on August 1, 1943, in Wichita Falls, Texas. They began farming near Pekin, ND. In the 1950s, they lived and farmed near Mapes, ND. They moved to McVille in 1960. They had 4 sons, Gary, Ardell, Dean and Merlyn. Glenn passed away on March 15, 2005, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, at the age of 84, and was buried in McVille, North Dakota.

Lovera Nora Settelmeyer was born February 16, 1920 at home in rural Sheyenne, ND to Elmer and Bettina (Bergum) Harrum. She graduated from New Rockford High School in 1938 and Bottineau School of Nursing in 1943. She was united in marriage to Joe Settelmeyer, a US Merchant Marine during World War II, on January 7, 1946 while serving in the US Army Nurse Corp as a Second Lieutentant in California. Upon her discharge, they returned and farmed in the New Rockford area until Joe's death in 1980. She was an RN in Carrington and New Rockford Nursing
Homes. Lovera later moved to Fargo and resided at River Square Apartments where she enjoyed sewing, reading, puzzles, playing cards and visiting with friends and family. She was always up for a trip. Joe and Lovera’s children are Jolene, Diane, Rodney, Gregory, Karen, Pauline, Margaret, Oveda, Mary Kay, Cyrilla, Joel and Jeffery.
Lovera passed away on October 9, 2010 in Fargo, ND, at the age of 90.

Edith Bernice Hallquist was born April 10, 1919 in Munster Township near New Rockford to Peter & Ingeborg Mogstad Hallquist. She was reared & educated there, graduating from New Rockford High School. She married Ben W. Garske in Devils Lake on June 18, 1938. He passed away on August 4, 1976. During World War II, she lived in Miles City, Montana. She returned to live in Devils Lake in December of 1945. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church & served as church secretary for several years. She was also a member of the ALCW. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Sons of Norway & the Eagles Auxiliary. She had one daughter, Judy.
Edith passed away on January 25, 1985 at her home in Devils Lake, at the age of 65.

June Elizabeth Haas was born on June 17, 1920, in New Rockford, North Dakota to John Lucius Haas and Klara Martinusdtr Haugen. She married Dwight Calvin Testerman in 1946. I couldn’t find any records of any children they may have had. June passed away on December 5, 2005, in Jerome, Idaho, at the age of 85, and was buried in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Ruth Frazer was born to William P. Frazer, Sr. and Caroline M. (Parker) Frazer on October 18, 1920 in New Rockford, North Dakota. She grew up on the family farm, and graduated from high school in New Rockford. She married Harold E. (Gene) Kahn in New Rockford on January 3, 1939. They moved to Devils Lake, North Dakota where their children were born. In 1955, the family moved to Ross Point, and the following year to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Ruth worked as a clerk for various businesses in the area. She was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church, the Elks and Eagles auxiliaries and the Red Hat Ladies. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards traveling, social functions, and tending her flower gardens. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family. Harold (Gene) Kahn passed October 20, 1986. Ruth married Anthony E. (Tony) Ross February 19, 1993. They enjoyed dancing and social events and traveled extensively in their motor home. They had FUN! Tony passed January 6, 2001.
Ruth children are M. Darlene, Dianne, Elaine, Dawn, Eugene, Phyllis and twin infant sons, Harold and Ronald.
Ruth passed away on October 1, 2006 surrounded by family at her daughter's home in Kellogg, Idaho, at the age of 85.
