This Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, we honor the resilience, creativity and cultural contributions of African Americans whose traditions helped shape the sound of New Orleans and, ultimately, the world.

In New Orleans, places like Congo Square became vital spaces where African musical traditions, rhythms and community practices were preserved and shared. Those influences helped lay the foundation for the music that would become jazz and continue to shape American culture.

As we commemorate Juneteenth, we invite you to explore our exhibitions Congo Square to the World and DRUMSVILLE: Evolution of the New Orleans Beat, which examine the enduring impact of these traditions on New Orleans music and beyond.
