Today, we remember Hurricane Katrina and honor the lives, neighborhoods and communities forever changed by August 29, 2005.

We also recognize the musicians, artists, culture bearers and New Orleanians whose resilience helped preserve the traditions and sounds of this city through extraordinary loss and rebuilding.

Music carries memory. Culture carries community.

Fats Domino's white Steinway piano that was majorly damaged in Hurricane Katrina's floodwaters but was restored and can be seen on display at the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Thanks to the dedication of Greg Lambousy, then‑Director of Collections at the Louisiana State Museum, and with support from National Geographic and Sir Paul McCartney, the pianos was preserved.

There’s something new to discover at the New Orleans Jazz Museum. ✨

A recently completed $1.1 million EDA-funded campus improvement project has expanded the ways visitors can gather, learn and experience music at the Museum.

The improvements include a new outdoor performance stage, expanded gathering spaces, a permanent sculpture garden, new café, enhanced landscaping and infrastructure, and a revitalized Education Courtyard.

It’s all part of creating a campus where music, history, education and community come together.

We can’t wait for you to experience it.

On August 12, 1966, the federal government transferred ownership of the U.S. Mint to the Louisiana State Museum. Today, it is home of the New Orleans Jazz Museum, where jazz and local artists are honored daily.
Come celebrate jazz in the city where it was born! The New Orleans Jazz Museum is open Tuesday - Sunday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Born August 10, 1888, Henry “Booker T” Glass was a bass drummer whose career was deeply rooted in New Orleans’ brass and dance band traditions.

Glass began his career with the Camelia Orchestra and Camelia Brass Band, both led by Wooden Joe Nicholas. He continued performing with many of the city’s leading brass and dance bands throughout his life, remaining part of New Orleans’ musical tradition until his death at age 92.

Music also ran in the family—his son, Nowell “Papa” Glass (1927–2001), was a bass drummer as well.
