Join us tomorrow from 4:30–6:30 PM for an open house at Where y’Art Works Gallery featuring ’s show “Presentable”

Southern femmes have traditionally been raised to present as pretty packages – always presentable – especially for the Sunday morning church runway. We learned to respect, cook, dance, pray, and be “good girls.” What we were not taught was how to listen to the super power that is our intuition.

I am of the generation that was forced to live and learn the consequences of not minding my underdeveloped inner voice. I fumbled around serving everyone but myself until the whisper morphed into a scream. I have earned beautiful scars, self-inflicted wounds I have turned into art. An act of glorious defiance.

This show reveals dreams, past-life memories, grief, and aspirations. Each piece is a time-stamp alluding to my current phase of self-discovery and intentional freedom. I am grateful to be here. The self I present here is beyond my ancestors’ imagination.

ROOTED

In a city full of art, culture, and tradition, life is a celebration.
Through cypress knees and corner stores, live oaks and second lines,
We are intertwined, always growing, and remembering our past.
Our roots run under sidewalks and shotgun houses, connected through stories,
braided through loss and laughter.
We make joy from what we are given
What grows here grows deep first.
We don’t just live here.
We are Rooted.

“I am a mixed media artist from a quaint little artist community in the piney hills of North Louisiana. The local university, Louisiana Tech, has had one of the strongest art departments in the south for many years, fostering a community that posses an unmatched enthusiasm for the visual arts for many generations. I am blessed to say, I Am A RUSTON ARTIST~ thank you Ruston!”

WHERE Y’ART WORKS FOR ARTISTS: MARY SINGLETON

“Nature is a hauntingly wild force that New Orleans has had to learn to coexist with. Both beneficial & contentious, the surrounding waters have taken life and given it. It is with respect and awe of this beautiful force that I seek to create a dialogue between the city and its natural surroundings.”

Mary has been commissioned by Where y’Art Works for numerous projects, including Ochsner Health System, Tulane University Innovation Institute, LCMC Health East Jefferson Hospital Emergency Department, and Roots of Resilience: The LCMC Health Tree of Life.

Where y’Art Works for Fidelity Bank

In collaboration with friends at Trapolin-Peer, we began a creative partnership with Fidelity Bank, that began with their New Orleans headquarters on Carondelet street. They asked us to develop an art program, centered around connecting local artists to individual branches that could be replicated throughout their expansion and in conjunction with the communities they serve. Since then, we have expanded this local art program to 8 different branches from New Orleans to Baton Rouge and Lafayette.
